there's a guide dog training school in a nearby town; i enjoy seeing the volunteers walking them around the streets, rewarding them for their good performance...

This is fascinating in that I lived in Manhattan for 5 year in the second half of the 80's. I couldn't imagine navigating that landscape and the places I went with a visual impairment.

At age three, my sister shot a roller bearing into her eye and barely sees with it. She has a Braille printer at home and translates things to Braille for the library.
