Huh...flash flood warning for NY County. Where does it ever flash flood in Manhattan? Serious question. Or does the National Weather Service just have a formula that says, a river is upstream from there, it's raining hard there, so the Hudson could overflow its banks suddenly?

AFAICT it's usually a combination of high tide, strong onshore winds , and lots of rain.

  1:31pm
Listener Robert:

Right, but that's not a FLASH flood, steveo.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:33pm
chris:

doesn't 'flash' refer to the speed at which the water rises?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:33pm
steveo:

oh hm I just read the NWS statement they say it'll be due to heavy rain combined with poor drainage; thanks for setting me straight .

flash floods happen all the time in hoboken back by the shop rite.
if i had a car parked over there this warning might save my bacon.
i have seen the water over there rise 2 ft in the 30 mins i was in the store. this happened about 6 weeks ago. i had to trudge through it to get back to my place
  1:56pm
dug:

and it only took like 1.5" rain to make it happen. granted it all fell in like half an hour. at high tide the sewer is below the level of the hudson river so there's nowhere for the water to go.

No, I did not like the duties at all, but they added a lot of value and would be a good resume line.

The key to holding a job appears to be embracing duties that makes one irreplaceable.

Or at least difficult to replace.
Also, it burns me to the core that I am a woman who is bad at math.
Avatar 2:30pm
Cecile:

oh, well, I still have a job.
Avatar 2:34pm
Rev. Turnip Druid:

Being a (self-professed) master of a skill-set that is increasingly irrelevant, it's like watching inevitable rot crawl up the leg -- hoping I can make it to retirement (or early death) before the rot catches me. And the skills/duties that would stop the rot are NOT appealing in the least.

This means being the only one good at a thing, but opportunities are very few. So when this gig dries up, Rev is dead in the water.

Meanwhile, we ROCK.
