what a brilliant kick off

Glad you dug it, we're gonna hear a lot of the early Impulse! stuff in this first hour. The classic quartet. Had to play one track with Miles, though...

Good morning Mark!
By very instinct I started to read a Trane-biography yesterday.
Not aware of the date.
  4:12am
mark r:

A happy coincidence, as we're doing an all-Coltrane show tonight!

Guido from Cologne:

Trane and Monk were my entrance to Jazz when I was 15/16.
  4:50am
mark r:

I wish I had time for something from the Trane/Monk at Carnegie Hall concert, but alas...

Santos L Halper:

Hold onto yer hats indeed. Thanks for all the Trane, mark!

Heavy Stuff!
:-)
Did you know that Trane actually took a couple of lessions with Ortette Coleman? (not for recording this album though ... Ascension reminds me more of Albert Ayler.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:08am
Guido from Cologne:

... mot really Ayler though ...

Is Eric Dolphy involved?
Don't remember.

Scraps:

Okay, I have to post: Ascension is not terrifying (to me): it is beautiful. (Actually, I don't think it's terrifying to most people; most people just didn't get it.) Now back to listening. Thank you.
  5:09am
markr:

I did not know that, Guido. The liner notes to this album ("Ascension") liken it to Coleman's "Free Jazz" and they say that Trane was a big admirer of Ayler, although for some reason he didn't bring him in for this date (Marion Brown, Pharaoh Sanders and Archie Sheep are all on here, though, so the avant-garde is well-represented). Sadly, Dolphy had already passed at this point.

Ayler played at Coltrane's funeral service.

(Love Marion Brown. So, so underrated.)

everyone's awake now!

markr:

Interesting. Didn't know that, either. Thanks for the info, Guido. So agree, Scraps (nice to see you again, btw.) Marion is one of my all-time favorites, love his mid-sixties Blue Note stuff. Welcome, Duke. Yes, Vincent, this would be kind of tough to sleep through.

Ajay:

Fantastic show
  5:14am
markr:

Glad you're enjoying, Ajay. It was a shame all the brilliant music I had to leave out. I'm thinking of locking myself in here and taking over the station for the day and going wall-to-wall Coltrane. (It would be my last show at FMU, but I'd get my 15 minutes at least.)

Wow, thanks for the link, Guido. I'm learning a lot today. FMU listeners are the best-informed, most discriminating, most intelligent listeners on the planet.

Incredible.

Guido from Cologne:

Without Trane's intercession Ayler never would have survived in impulse!'s rooster. The master praised Albert's technique. (That's what I learned from the documentary that came out some 10 years ago.)

Favouriting this show for future listening, Mark.
And if you do lock yourself in today, I'll undertake to get you food.
Vegan OK?

markr:

Perfect, Sem. I am feeling a bit peckish. But the Pidge is already here, and I enjoy his morning show so much, I'm going to step aside as prescribed.

Thanks for tuning in this morning--sorry for the technical hang-ups on that last record, I get another chance to get it right next week!
