Nice work today, Bill. Happy that X. Ray Burns got his phone back.

"That's Amore" did not attain #1, but stayed at Billboard's #2 or #3 from mid-December 1953 thru Feb 1954, behind either paesano Tony Bennett's "Rags to Riches" or Eddie Fisher's rendition of "O Mein Papa." "Amore" co-writer Harry Warren also had a hand in "We're in the Money," "You Must Have Been a Beautiful Baby," "Jeepers Creepers," "Forty-Second Street," "Lullaby of Broadway," and "Chattanooga Choo Choo."

8:05am everybody loves the same song sometime:

A week or two in those early 1954 charts the diverse top ten included 3 versions of Kismet's "Stranger in Paradise" (Bennett, 4 Aces, Tony Martin) plus 2 versions of "O Mein Papa" (Fisher, Calvert). Someone writes that another version of "Banana Boat" charted simultaneously (The Tarriers with Alan Arkin hit #4, & Belafonte). 4 versions of "Unchained Melody" charted simultaneously. Let me bookmark this site for reference:

  11:21am BK:

One of the chart services used to list the hit song's title, followed by all of the multiple versions receiving airplay around the country. Over time, only the most popular of the versions of hit songs are remembered by oldies stations and record geeks like me. I'd LOVE to get my hands on some of those charts. I currently have reference guides for the Billboard, Cashbox and Record World hit parades, none of which list the myriad of wanna-be regional versions of popular hit songs.
11:44am memories are made of this:

I found CASHBOX listed a hit song's title, followed by multiple versions in Jan. 1954:

Jan. 1954 BILLBOARD magazine had "TERRITORIAL BEST SELLERS" charts covering Atlanta, Boston, Buffalo, Chicago, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Dallas-Ft. Worth, Detroit, Kansas City, Los Angeles, Milwaukee, New Orleans, New York, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, St. Louis, Seattle, and Washington-Baltimore:

BILLBOARD, CASHBOX, and many other magazines are archived at (though it's tough slogging through the PDF files):

Friendlier digitized CASHBOX charts are at:

BILLBOARD's Hot 100 is digitized at (but not including regional "Territorial Best Sellers" charts):

An April 1968 Buffy Sainte-Marie cover (but article is missing) of FM Guide is at:
