Favoriting September 12, 2017: TREY SPRUANCE (Secret Chiefs 3)
Secret Chiefs 3 founder Trey Spruance joins Devon in the studio to discuss the band's current tour both supporting Dave Lombardo's Dead Cross and as a headliner which included a stop at WFMU's Montgomery Hall, as well as the band's recent and upcoming ambitious release schedule on Trey's Web of Mimicry Records expanding the SC3 subgroups: The Electromagnetic Azoth, UR, Ishraqiyun, Traditionalists, Holy Vehm, FORMS and NT Fan. Although Traditionalists have been described as "decidedly walking in the footprints of the Great Masters of cinema music" (e.g., 2009's "Le Mani Destre Recise Degli Ultimi Uomini" is an imaginary giallo score inspired by Italian composers Morricone, Piccioni, Umiliani and Goblin), nearly all of the SC3 subgroups have visual and cinematic elements (for example, UR and FORMS' reinterpretations of "Exodus," "Halloween" and "The Day the Earth Stood Still" are always SC3 live highlights). Mimicry released two 7"s for Traditionalists and Ishraqiyun earlier this year and announced the long awaited "Book of Souls: Folio B" album along with a full length for Holy Vehm. The band opens for Dead Cross tonight at Gramercy Theatre in Manhattan and tomorrow at Warsaw in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. Go to webofmimicry.com for more info.

Hey! What luck! On advice of listener Bjarne, I took in the Secret Chiefs 3 show at Monty Hall this past weekend. What a treat.

Devon E. Levins:

SC3's more focused 5-piece version is playing tonight at Gramercy Theatre and tomorrow at Warsaw in Greenpoint with a very focused, hard-hitting 45-min set opening for Dead Cross. Tix still available for tomorrow. Tonight sold out. They got to stretch out last Sat in Monty Hall for an hour and a half with this new lineup which includes two guitars (possibly the first tour with two guitars in their 20-plus year existence?).

This tour includes the always amazing Matt Lebofsky on keys and the return of Jason Schimmel of Estradasphere on 2nd guitar and various other stringed instruments and drummer Peijman Kouretchian of Seattle's Girth on drums (a monster!!) with the new addition Joe Lester of Intronaut on bass.

@Rene - Yes, a lot of musical notes in a relatively short period of time. They're a very tight group.
