re: Sony CDP XE-500 players -- I'm the main broker and procurer of these 1997-2000-produced units. They usually play manufactured/"silver" CDs without a problem, but they were never designed to play CD-Rs. It is completely hit and miss with those.

A quick look at Wikipedia for Axis Bold As Love has no mention of Elvin Jones in the personnel section. Probably Mitchell on drums, who could play jazzy. I think that's why he was chosen by Jimi for the band.
