Is that a sword in you pocket, or are you a LARPER?
  7:04pm
Mandy:

LARPing saved my life. no lie. I was massively depressed and introverted in my early 20s. meeting like-minded people, working on monthly projects, and working through my emotions through a character helped me become a better person.

Don't most LARP at their work?
Avatar 7:09pm
Jeff:

When I gave my quote I totally had LARPing confused with MMORPG.

LARPers actually go outside to play, right? I don't even do that!
  7:09pm
Mandy:

it so so hard to understand how compelling larping is without actually trying it out. it's like theater but you are both the audience and the actor at the same time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:09pm
Asheville Jon:

they sounds like hipster dweebs

Leather work, and chain male on the side!

@Mandy, I totally agree!

didn't think of this until now but how different would this be from a Star Wars cosplay convention where theres hundreds of Jedi, Sith, droid and monsters running around with custom built weapons?

  7:13pm
dez:

i don't hear the term Larper thrown around much in the star wars universe where I spend far too much time
  7:13pm
Mandy:

@dez, it's different because it's an ongoing story and everyone is involved. at a con it's about you in a costume posing for an audience. larping has no audience except the players.
Avatar 7:13pm
Jeff:

So wait, is old-school activity like the SCA (which I totally remember from nearly 40 years ago) considered a subset of LARPing?
Avatar 7:13pm
Kate:

Lord of the Rings is nerdy? Holy Rivendale Batman!
Avatar 7:13pm
kimzilla:

@Dez, but the difference is that they play a character that they made up, with a plot that they make up with specific rules, like in a video game. Where as the folks at a convention dress up to play a perfect replica of an established character.
Avatar 7:15pm
Will from Seattle:

all the world's a stage...
Avatar 7:15pm
Kate:

Dell, Rivendell, sorry. Loss of nerd points.
  7:16pm
Mandy:

@Jeff, I do SCA too. not really but I think it is. if you ask the wrong SCAdian you will offend them. they can be very sensitive to nerdy levels
Avatar 7:21pm
Kate:

We have nerf gun wars at my office sometimes and we are all real characters (without costumes), do we qualify?
  7:22pm
dez:

good point on the audience aspect
Avatar 7:23pm
Jeff:

@Mandy - I'm totally unsurprised people might get touchy about which world they belong to (especially if they see a new movement coming up and they're all "But we were here first!)
Avatar 7:24pm
TehBadDr:

Is that sword a cut out bit of cardboard wrapped in foil? You gonna run me through with that?
Avatar 7:25pm
kimzilla:

@TedBadDr, they actually have regulations around weapon, they are foam.
Avatar 7:29pm
TehBadDr:

So who's keeping score? Is there a ref?
Avatar 7:30pm
kimzilla:

It's an honor system, and then I think you give it to the leader of the LARP so the records are tracked.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:30pm
ultradamno:

Do all the people who play monsters in the night ever throw their own private parties? Like a real graveyard smash?
  7:30pm
Mandy:

@TehBad other players and there are marshals/storytellers who are not in game at the time watching over it. but mostly it is honor system. people who cheat usually get theirs
Avatar 7:31pm
kimzilla:

Oh good, we have a LARPer here to answer the heavy hitting questions. Thanks @Mandy
  7:31pm
Emily:

@ultradamno I would totally go to that party.
  7:32pm

Thank you Mandy! And welcome :)

Colander helmet! A fellow Pastifarian!
Avatar 7:39pm
TehBadDr:

What did the girl scouts think of all that?
Avatar 7:40pm
Will from Seattle:

there's a LARP group that meets at Volunteer park in Seattle frequently. But nerdy things like that tend to be better understood & tolerated more here, so they probably aren't as concerned about trolling from outsiders
  7:41pm
Mandy:

your first character is always you. I realized I had successfully managed my depression and anxiety when I felt uncomfortable playing my first character. but creating her helped me understand myself in a healthy way.
Avatar 7:44pm
kimzilla:

@Mandy, can you talk about the female perspective in the LARPing community? I understand that there are a lot more woman now, but it wasn't always that way. How long have you been doing this?
Avatar 7:45pm
Kate:

@Mandy I totally get that. We heal ourselves by engaging with ourselves in new ways.
  7:48pm
Mom:

Who doesn't like to escape reality and take on a different persona? Sounds like a creative way to do it but I wonder how they find the time and/or money.
  7:49pm
Mom:

correction: who "wouldn't" not who "doesn't!"
  7:49pm
Mandy:

I've been larping since 2009. My games have a very slight majority male, and I have never felt uncomfortable around men. there are some games that have misogynist players and you just don't attend those. you have every right to say no to an interaction. and there are player representatives that you can talk to

KC:

For those fearing time commitments, not all LARPs are ongoing stories. There are many (especially at conventions) that are one-shots; a story contained in one, four hour session.
