The Gloria Ann Taylor 'Deep Inside You' track was at least issued on a Columbia 45 - though I don't know if it is the same mix. And a few other 45s, such as "World That's Not Real".
Avatar 12:46pm
Duane:

Jtothe K: It's not quite the same mix, but yeah it's still cool!!

I hopped the train a while back but it's taken me this long to climb inside through an open window.

That grocery store across the street was "Big Star" if I'm not mistaken..
Avatar 1:49pm
Jshatan:

Great interview! I always wondered why Ike turned more towards interpretation rather than writing his own stuff. Obviously, his interpretations were astounding but he and Porter wrote some of the best songs ever. Was it due to their partnership dissolving and IH not wanting to start again with someone else?
  1:49pm
Laura:

The band Big Star came up with that band name peering our the window of Stax recording studio at that grocery store :)
  1:51pm
Laura:

Wikipedia: "The band adopted the name Big Star when one member was given the idea from a grocery store often visited for snacks during recording sessions. One of many Big Star Markets outlets in the Memphis region at the time, it had a logo consisting of a five-pointed star enclosing the words "Big Star"

Every song on the Sam and Dave album Soul Man is spotless. I've loved it since I found it for 50 cents at the Salvation Army after the Blues Brothers first appeared on SNL.

Big Star were awesome. My standout memory of shopping at a Big Star was in the mid-80s, when I opened a Goo-Goo Cluster® (candy bar thing) from there a freaking moth FLEW out. And yes, I still ate it. The candy, not the moth.

"monument of originality" nice! :D

Stevel - this is the documentary where Alex et al tell the grocery store story (and mention that Isaac Hayes was at Stax at the same time they were): http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2290151/
