Sachal1

From Lahore, Pakistan, the Sachal Ensemble features top-flight musicians whose careers were sabotaged when General Muhammad Zia-ul-Haq became president in 1977 and suppressed most non-religious music. The 10-piece band combines conventional Western instruments (such as piano, bass, drums) with traditional Pakistani ones, such as tabla, dholak (a two-headed hand drum) and sarangi, a bowed string instrument. Its repertoire on this tour will mix traditional Sufi music, ragas and beloved Pakistani film songs (such as " Ranjha Ranjha," from the movie Raavan) with uniquely South Asian spins on Western classics, including The Beatles' "Eleanor Rigby," R.E.M.'s "Everybody Hurts," Henry Mancini's "The Pink Panther,” and their YouTube hit, a highly distinctive take on Dave Brubeck's hit "Take Five".

koite

Habib Koité is a modern troubadour with extraordinary appeal as his musicianship, wit, and wisdom translate across cultures. The guitarist and composer was named the biggest pop star of the region by Rolling Stone magazine. Born in Senegal, he comes from a lineage of griots and grew up in Mali. He formed his band Bamada in 1988 and the reception given to the band’s first tour outside of Africa, in 1994, prompted the recording of a well-received debut album. Across a trio of albums - Muso Ko, Ma Ya and Baro - Habib has produced reflective, semi-acoustic, contemporary interpretations of multiple ethnic traditions from around his country. Koité‘s most recent release, Soô (which translates to home) looks squarely at his native land, a country torn apart by violence over the last two years, at a time when a real feeling of home couldn’t be more vital.
