Switchblade Batman:

From wikipedia, fascinating.

Shooby Taylor was born in Indiana Township, Pennsylvania, on September 19, 1929.[1] Shortly thereafter he moved with his family to Harlem, where he spent the majority of his life. Besides Shooby's several decades of pursuing a career as a scat singer, he also worked 21 years as a New York City postal worker.

Shooby recorded as Shooby Taylor, the human instrument. There is at least one "arcade recording", a two sided 45 rpm record of the acapella scat Expressing Myself parts 1 & 2 from 1971. This was given as a gift to Beverly Anderson who worked at the veterans hospital in Staten Island where, according to Beverly, Mr. Taylor was an intermittent psyche ward patient
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:14pm
coelacanth∅:

(for the record i tolerate shooby's scatting more than Ella's or most anyone else's)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:15pm
Webhamster Henry:

So Irwin, are there isolated Shooby tracks so we can enjoy him in all his pure Shooby-ness and remix him on top of other arrangements?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:15pm
dale:

WHY was scatman caruthers a success? wouldn't it be great if shooby was the guy who knew the kid had the shining and got an axe in the back?
Avatar 7:18pm
glenn:

i pretty much can't stand scat
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:18pm
Richard S:

"Key of Z" is a great book!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:21pm
dale:

i have that book. where i learned of the shaggs, shooby, the 'oh, canada' lady....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:22pm
coelacanth∅:

glenn, yeah. i'm trying to think of what scat singer i dislike less than Shooby Taylor, and i can't think of any that i have more than a bit of tolerance for.

Ken From Hyde Park:

Lucky he could remember where he kept the key to that apartment and also that he found the key, at that.
Avatar 7:26pm
glenn:

it just seems pointless and frankly ridiculous.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:26pm
coelacanth∅:

hahaha! it is good for its comic value.
- i don't know how it was a mystery to him that they didn't take him seriously.
...if he'd marketed himself as a comedian, they would've taken him seriously.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:27pm
dale:

if englebert humberdink had scatted a bit his version might have been memorable
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:29pm
dale:

is ella's or mel's scat singing pointless?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:29pm
dale:

my wife just asked me 'is it called scat singing because it's shitty? like scat?'
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:30pm
coelacanth∅:

Hahaha! dale that's hilarious!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:31pm
dale:

irwin - turn incorrect music into a netflix series.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:33pm
coelacanth∅:

i don't know if Ella or Mel scatting was pointless; but in my case, at least, listening to it is. it's something any child can do.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:36pm
dale:

geesh, this part is sad.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:37pm
Switchblade Batman:

I'm not a fan of the music, but this story is amazing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:38pm
coelacanth∅:

yeh. i have things to do but i can't leave.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:42pm

The Shooby tape was in the WFMU Catalog, back in the day.

"Shooby is a proven effective analgesic for temporary relief from existential pain."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:43pm
Switchblade Batman:

ok, I'm sorry, How the hell is this not funny?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:44pm
coelacanth∅:

so -going back to Webhamster Henry @7.15, are there any isolated/a cappella tracks of Shooby? i wouldn't mind giving them a treatment!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:44pm
dale:

people bought peter lemonjello - yet scoffed at shooby taylor.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:44pm
Webhamster Henry:

If RSM had one ... perhaps!
  7:44pm
Sean:

All this anticipation and it sounds like an Italian man having a seizure.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:45pm
dale:

gwilley edmondez took a page out of shooby's book.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:45pm
Switchblade Batman:

lol, I wouldn't put it that way @Sean, but you're not far off the mark either.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:46pm
coelacanth∅:

true...and it's not any less bearable than justin beaver or, well, nearly everything on the bill-bored top (of the bottom of the barrel) 100.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:47pm
dale:

what's wrong with you naysayers? IT'S GENIUS!! just the pursuit of the style is genius.
  7:47pm
McGreivey:

Shooby is upsetting my cat. I'm not sure if she's good-upset, or bad-upset. She doesn't usually care about music, one way or the other.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:47pm
coelacanth∅:

...okay - maybe a little less bearable.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:48pm
Switchblade Batman:

I suppose. It's interesting, it's heartfelt @dale. But it's also very very funny.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:48pm
Webhamster Henry:

@Dan: get Dave The Spazz in here to discuss the Shemp Meditation Tape. (Which was actually the break-out hit of the WFMU Catalog)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:48pm
Richard S:

You can TRY and sing like Shooby - go ahead, I dare you to try - but he's impossible to copy. And like Florence Foster Jenkins, what comes through all of it is the sheer love for and enjoyment of music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:48pm
dale:

i'll name my next cat shooby. or taylor.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:48pm
coelacanth∅:

haha! dale, i'm sorry! but i was doing shit like this when i was 7 years old. i don't think it's genius!
Avatar 7:49pm

THIS deserves to be heard at carnegie hall. alas too late.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:50pm
zopa:

Thanks for this, Dan.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:50pm
Switchblade Batman:

I wouldn't want to sing like him. God bless him that he loves it. But come on, it's unintentional comedy genius. It's the stuff of the finest mockumentaries
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:52pm
zopa:

Oh... thanks be to Irwin too!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:53pm
chris:

so fun. thanks, Dan and Irwin. thanks, Irwin for following the thread on the guy; thanks, Dan, for having a show where Shooby fits right in.

That's a nice way to end the story. Wow, and thanks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:59pm

so much of music history is people getting discovered and people getting ignored and people getting screwed and people dying and people getting rediscovered

the ghost that never walked
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:00pm

Shooby would have done a great cover of "Let It Go".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:00pm

jeez, Irwin, as much as i don't need to hear Shooby Taylor more than once every few years, Thank you for what you did with him. very respectable.
