I think I need to catch a Westbound Number Nine.

Just for the hell of it in mass transit matters (just looked at some pics of these this afternoon in a months old Globe magazine, but I saw them growing up), on some trip to Boston I gotta ride the Pullman Standard trolley cars still in use on one line. Designed in the 30s, put into service in the 40s, still rollin'. I remember reading years ago how MBTA mechanics had to go DIY to improv and replicate things and rely on long experience, because there ain't been no supplier for some parts on those vintage cars for many moons.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:23pm
David D:

All transit matters here - thanks still b/p! Greetings Henry, Hilmar, Michael: Neue Westen für alle!
Avatar 4:30pm
still b/p:

That's good, because I don't think the trolleys really get in subway tunnels, and I don't want to get all of us into an Above v. Below Ground fan punch-up here like a bunch of soccer hooligans.
Avatar 4:35pm
glenn:

streetcar or trolley?
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 4:37pm
doctorjazz:

Onda Vaga track fun!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:38pm
David D:

I grew up wondering why the Subway was above ground so often. Anyhow, share those tracks, I say!
Avatar 4:38pm
still b/p:

Don't know the protocol of nomenclature. Call 'em trolleys here:
www.bostonglobe.com...
Avatar 4:39pm
glenn:

streetcars have tracks and metal wheels. trolleys have rubber tires.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 4:40pm
Sem Chumbo:

Good evening, David, Subway-ers. Cooking and listening, sounds pretty great.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:42pm
David D:

We have lots of streetcars here usually called trams in "Internationalese"/English or Straßenbahn in German. All very confusing. Nothing trolley-like though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:42pm
David D:

Thanks, Sem - welcome aboard!
Avatar 4:47pm
still b/p:

There are trolleys and trolley buses with rubber tires. But plenty of both trolleys and streetcars back in the day were metal wheels on tracks. Now we're gonna rumble about transit systems after all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:49pm
Parq:

Still, you cannot believe how I came to hate those things in my five years in Boston. If they are still running on one line, I feel sorry for the folks on that line.
Avatar 4:53pm
still b/p:

Because they were slow, breakdowny and uncomfortable? They got the heat and AC now, but still slow.
Avatar 4:53pm
glenn:

the biggest problem with streetcars is the cars in front of them, for the most part.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:55pm
Parq:

Also ugly. You forgot ugly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:55pm

I remember a shudder when seeing them in a movie set in Montreal -- Duddy Kravitz, I think.

I like this song. First heard the melody as Leave Her Johnny, Leave Her on a sea shanty album my family had.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:20pm
David D:

I'm always amazed to rediscover familiar melodies in completely different songs, often in different languages. Or sometimes it just sounds familiar and I can't quite place my finger on it.

Hopefully, all of the debris will be picked up soon (they been doing little by little each week, but fallen trees are expensive to move, and I think FEMA is finally is providing money for pickup, as the city has nearly broken its bank cleaning up already. I nearly hit a large branch that rolled from a pile of debris last night. There are still utility workers out everywhere, but now I suspect they are getting the infrastructure back to normal rather then rush patch jobs I witnessed earlier. Thanks!
