Killer first hour. One great feature of this show, vs. some jazz shows/stations in the NYC area, is how welcoming it's always been. Too many hosts of said NYC jazz shows have made me want to kick in the car radio b/c they're so gatekeeper-ish. If there's ever been two genres that are made by all, for all, they're blues and jazz. Don't wall 'em off or put 'em in a tower, NYC stations!

@james: pretty much the overall WFMU vibe. When they act as gatekeepers, it's mainly to distract folks from the gaping hole they tore in the fence a few steps away

What I've heard in the voices of NYC jazz DJs, I've heard in the voices of science fiction fans, comic book and roleplaying game store staff, geek tastemakers, film writers, and, sadly, record dealers—smug, exclusionary, always male, always moving the goalposts of who can join their clubs. That shit needs to take a long one-way walk to a shallow hole.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:15am
Jeff Golick:

Amen, @ljfw.

Avatar 🦀 Swag For Life Member 10:29am
doctorjazz:

@ljfw, what jazz station in NYC do you listen to? As far as I know, WBGO is the only full-time jazz station here. The only other station with some jazz programming is WKCR, which is the station of Columbia University. Most of their programming is by students, who seem to be learning about jazz as they go along, but the Guru there is Phil Schapp. He has some regular shows. He is incredibly knowledgeable, but can be intolerable when he starts talking /lecturing for a half hour or so (which is a frequent occurrence). Actually learned a lot from him about Jazz early on (but can't listen to him these days)
I Love wfmu, but I actually do wish there was more jazz programming here.
