Ken From Hyde Park:

Dumb Chevy advertisers kept playing Seger's "Like a Rock" in their commercials. I heard that chorus way too many times from those ads.

Hi everybody! Been busy with these short songs, the playlist, etc. How is everybody?

I like Tori Amos, but I hate her cover of Smell Like Teen Spirit, specifically because she leaves out the last verse. Why?
  3:28am
markr:

Well, thank God it's over, then...Morning, Hugo!

God, I love Hersh. She’s a reliably good one woman show, too; seen her must have been twelve times or more.

And in my complete love/hate comment set, like Bob Seger, like even Night Moves, but boy, hate Old Time Rock r Roll, especially when we heard it =again= because of Tom Cruise.

Good morning

I know for a fact that it was Bob's idea to sell that song to Chevy, not because he needed the money (he didn't), but because he wanted to help the Detroit auto industry. I think he's a very cool guy, he obviously has millions of fans who love his later stuff, but really, for me, I'm with him up through "Live Bullet"--which is actually one of the greatest live rock & roll albums ever--and then I'm out. Nothing after that. Bit for his previous work, he gets a lifetime pass, IMHO.
  3:44am
markr:

And I've said this on my show before, so not to be boring, but Bob evaluates his work exactly the opposite of me, and hates his early stuff and tries to keep it out of print, but I managed to snag copies of some of those early albums when they came out on CD briefly, so there's always the threat of some early Seger on Circle Time, just like a cloud hanging over us--it might rain, but it might not (probably won't).

dismayed for Abrams death. At least we heard lots of Chicago jazz in the last week
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:46am
pacific standard simon:

Smokin' OPs is the best Seger album ever. I'm sure he disagrees .
  3:48am
markr:

Abrams was 87, so he lived a rich and full life, but it's still tough when a giant like that passes. Especially when you know he probably won't get nearly the amount of recognition that he deserved. Now if one of the Kardashians dies, stop the presses...that's all we'll hear about for a week.
  3:48am
markr:

BTW 28 people dead in that Texas shooting yesterday. We continue to be the stupidest country on earth.
Avatar 3:53am
Scraps:

I didn’t know Seger dislikes his early work so much. That’s kinda weird.
  3:55am
markr:

I think he considers it raw and amateurish (which is what I like), and his new stuff is more polished and mature (which is what I don't). He's entitled to his opinion, and I'm entitled to mine. And obviously, as I said, millions, and I mean millions of fans disagree with me. I read somewhere that he has the highest net worth of any musician, $87 million or something. I found that hard to believe. But I guess it's possible.
Avatar 3:55am
Scraps:

That first Abrams album is so great!!
  3:56am
markr:

It's kind of spooky that I played a track from it last week. I just played it because it sounded Halloween-y. I had no idea he had just died.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:56am
pacific standard simon:

He sounds intense. Repo Mn is always intense.
Avatar 4:00am

I don’t think millions of Seger fans diasgree with you, simply because I don’t think they’ve heard his early work.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:09am
pacific standard simon:

Well said, Scraps.
  4:11am
markr:

Well, I mean they disagree with me about his work from the late 70s on, which they love and I don't.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:18am

Glenn Close. Mark? Seriously?
  4:19am

My brain froze for a moment. It happens. Often on the air. I knew it was Del Close lol.

Good topic! The first classical album you bought. Mine was George Gershwin, Rhapsody in Blue, American in Paris, Concert in F, conducted by Mitch Miller

I think a version of "Rhapsody in Blue" was one of my first, too--probably among the first ten classical albums I bought. a beautiful version with Michael Tilson Thomas playing the piano. It had a bunch of other Gershwin tunes on it, too.
