A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Loretta Lynn carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

Avatar Thu. 1/4/18 9:27am Linda Lee:

steveo ~ i do too, really. brave woman. an amazing artist given a great platform .. one of the best. & in that spotlight she's treated unfairly practically by law.
Avatar Thu. 1/4/18 9:27am common:

good snow tunes, trouble! thanky
Avatar Thu. 1/4/18 9:28am steveo:

well said, @linda
Avatar Thu. 1/4/18 9:29am Linda Lee:

'course i meant her platform's one of the best .. not that she's one of the best artists. but she's good! :-)
Avatar Thu. 1/4/18 9:29am Trouble:

yoko is an incredible human being. i saw her in NYC in the 80's on an upper east side sidewalk and she gave me a giant smile, for no reason other than we were people in the same space.
Avatar Thu. 1/4/18 9:29am queems:

to be fair i'm just really not into screaming
Avatar Thu. 1/4/18 9:29am Trouble:

howdy @dale!
Avatar Thu. 1/4/18 9:29am NotARealDoctor:

I really do enjoy Yoko
Avatar Thu. 1/4/18 9:29am Linda Lee:

prejudice against her because Beatles. ridiculous. hidden misogyny too, when it's virulent. it's that transparent.
  Thu. 1/4/18 9:30am Kurt:

OMG, yoko knows how to smile? That's so awesome. Maybe she could learn how to sing too.
Avatar Thu. 1/4/18 9:30am melinda:

Trouble that's a great story.
Avatar Thu. 1/4/18 9:30am Linda Lee:

here we go .. :-D
Avatar Thu. 1/4/18 9:31am steveo:

right on cue
Avatar Thu. 1/4/18 9:33am Linda Lee:

Ha! sure, any number of death metal screechers & howlers are totally great. without question. but Yoko!!! omg! :-D
Avatar Thu. 1/4/18 9:33am Scraps:

Baby Boomers hate Yoko, as a rule. Subsequent generations treat her more fairly, I think
Avatar Thu. 1/4/18 9:34am Linda Lee:

Late Boomer here. don't hate her at all. Boomer men, however .. not the most enlightened bunch generally. despite the hype. :-D
Avatar Thu. 1/4/18 9:35am glenn:

meh. the beatles were gonna break up, with or without yoko. the bigger factor was the control freak tendencies of both john and paul.
  Thu. 1/4/18 9:35am Kurt:

Didn't she break up the Beatles? Isn't that why boomers hater her? Whatever, the Beatles were overrated anyway.
Avatar Thu. 1/4/18 9:35am Linda Lee:

hey kids! can you say 'scapegoat'? :-D
Avatar Thu. 1/4/18 9:36am glenn:

geeez. kurt needs to get laid.
Avatar Thu. 1/4/18 9:37am melinda:

Scapegoat indeed.
Avatar Thu. 1/4/18 9:37am listener james from westwood:

I (a Gen Xer, for all these marketing-borne terms fucking mean) take a person's reaction to Ono as a litmus test. If it's based in racism, misogyny, or that gross, usually male strain of chauvinistic Beatles nostalgia, I keep them at a certain distance.
Avatar Thu. 1/4/18 9:37am dale:

ONLY yoko i ever heard before last year or so is walking on thin ice. like what i've heard on the station
Avatar Thu. 1/4/18 9:38am Linda Lee:

it's not about the music, really, with the beatles. not at this point.
the farther we move from their time, though .. the less that nuance matters.
  Thu. 1/4/18 9:38am emily:

thanks for making my day, trouble!
Avatar Thu. 1/4/18 9:38am Scraps:

And her art is not for the masses. (I don’t really like her art, or her music. I don’t hate her, either.) She married Lennon, and the masses became aware of her. And, yes, the culture of rock music was extremely misogynistic. (Still is, but much less so.)
Avatar Thu. 1/4/18 9:39am NotARealDoctor:

I used to hate Yoko because it was the thing to do, then a friend in college played me one of her records, now I own some of her records myself
Avatar Thu. 1/4/18 9:39am Linda Lee:

'chauvinistic Beatles nostalgia' .. good one, listener james! something about the romance of the angry young men ...
Avatar Thu. 1/4/18 9:39am NotARealDoctor:

I feel like I was having this discussion last week... Was it here?
Avatar Thu. 1/4/18 9:40am annie:

i've been a fan of yoko since "Life with the Lions" back in the 70s (?) ....
Avatar Thu. 1/4/18 9:40am Scraps:

@Linda, that’s why I said “as a rule”. :-)
Avatar Thu. 1/4/18 9:41am NotARealDoctor:

I might've mentioned that I've read and burned her book, Grapefruit, several times
Avatar Thu. 1/4/18 9:42am Linda Lee:

inspired to burn a book several times? that's effective art.
Avatar Thu. 1/4/18 9:42am Linda Lee:

kudos to her on that. :-D
Avatar Thu. 1/4/18 9:42am βrian:

Just in time for the oiseaux.
Avatar Thu. 1/4/18 9:44am NotARealDoctor:

Well it's in the instructions for the book...
Avatar Thu. 1/4/18 9:45am steveo:

i just put a library hold on Grapefruit; hopefully I won't be tempted to burn it
Avatar Thu. 1/4/18 9:45am Linda Lee:

& you followed the instructions! :-)
Avatar Thu. 1/4/18 9:45am melinda:

That was a lovely drone.
Avatar Thu. 1/4/18 9:46am steveo:

i hope you did not have to haul a giant crate of records on the bus...
Thu. 1/4/18 9:47am Peter in Seattle:

Just turned 12 yr. old students on to Grapefruit when they suggested that a sculpture could be something like a Yoko suggested piece :-) They thought it cool!
Avatar Thu. 1/4/18 9:48am Lixiviated Life:

Burning books?
Has it come to that already?
It maybe more effective to tear out the pages, crumple them up and place them under your clothing.
Fire will burn out but insulation will last longer.
(and it's far less fascist)
Avatar Thu. 1/4/18 9:49am NotARealDoctor:

I think this book burning was more artistic
Avatar Thu. 1/4/18 9:49am mb:

Trouble, hello! Thx for the Dub!
Avatar Thu. 1/4/18 9:50am Linda Lee:

if the book's meant to be burned, it ain't a fascist act. it's not the act, it's the intent.
Avatar Thu. 1/4/18 9:50am Trouble:

no records @steveo. i went all digi and made sets last nite from tons of music at home. i brought only 2 bird 7" records. isn't that odd?
Avatar Thu. 1/4/18 9:50am Trouble:

hey @peter: start them young!
Avatar Thu. 1/4/18 9:51am Linda Lee:

nice work Peter. :-)
Avatar Thu. 1/4/18 9:51am Sem:

Oh, nice, Sidney.
Avatar Thu. 1/4/18 9:52am Linda Lee:

speaking of combustion & censorship, anyone else remember the burning Beatles records?
Avatar Thu. 1/4/18 9:53am steveo:

Good planning, Trouble! Modern DJs have it easier :) I'm sure the bird records are as light as a feather.
Avatar Thu. 1/4/18 9:53am Linda Lee:

Christian fundie nonsense in response to John's astute Jesus comment. i'm sure some of those good folks went out & bought the records to burn .. achieving i don't know what.

French toy piano - that's pretty wintry sounding!
Thu. 1/4/18 10:36am Karen in Sleepy Hollow:

You’ll love it @trouble it made me cry in the first 10 minutes and smile almost the whole way. No spoilers!
Avatar Thu. 1/4/18 10:38am melinda:

@Mandy I liked that movie too. What did you pursue after leaving the freelance art world?
Avatar Thu. 1/4/18 10:39am Trouble:

@karen have you seen the gleaners by agnes? so gorgeous!!
Avatar Thu. 1/4/18 10:41am Adrian in London:

There are a couple of Agnes Varda films on Mubi, the UK version at least: Dagguereotypes and Mur Murs. Have you seen them, Trouble?

Avatar Thu. 1/4/18 10:50am melinda:

I have mixed feelings about all of my snow. I would miss it if I lived in Florida, though. Growing up in Texas I couldn't wait to move to a place with regular snow, always felt disappointed in winter.
Avatar Thu. 1/4/18 10:50am The Oscar:

Been busy working from home, but checking in from snowy Boston! I'm pretty sure Agnes Varda will be doing a lecture (series?) at the Harvard Film Archive in the coming months, along with screenings of most or all of her films.
Avatar Thu. 1/4/18 10:51am tikbartok:

I live in L.A. and it will soon be 73f. Your program this morning makes we wish there was snow outside. What good are blankets and a fireplace and Great Radio if it isn't freezing outside! I look out my window and see palm trees. Thank you for bringing back my east coast memories!
  Thu. 1/4/18 10:51am Mandy:

@Melinda I'm an art teacher now. I'm a lot happier. but when you're 20 you think that your degree is carved out of stone.

Avatar Thu. 1/4/18 10:52am Trouble:

snow is not my problem, per se. it's the parking a car on the city street, no driveway problem. digging a new hole every time you return home. i'm getting all bourgie, longing for a driveway. what next?
Avatar Thu. 1/4/18 10:53am queems:

i just got a driveway after 11 years of not having one. come to the dark side, trouble! we have parking.
Avatar Thu. 1/4/18 10:53am BronwynB:

soooo glad i dont have a car to worry about. on the other hand, today i had to walk from 8th to 6th ave, which doesn't sound like a lot, but it is when you're walking against the wind and ICE IS BLOWING IN YOUR FACE

The practical hassles of snow are what get me, too. It was a lot easier when I was young and living in an apartment where someone else took care of the snow removal, and I could walk to work.
Avatar Thu. 1/4/18 10:57am queems:

this is my first winter where i'm solely responsible for shoveling the sidewalk and driveway and boy is it cramping my snow style
Avatar Thu. 1/4/18 10:58am bobdoesthings:

@trouble - try adding +music or +band in your search.. sometimes that helps.. or also + discography
Avatar Thu. 1/4/18 10:58am βrian:

I leave my car in the drive and ride the bus to work. Gotta clear that sidewalk, though.
Avatar Thu. 1/4/18 10:59am queems:

i also take the bus! i have a long sidewalk. i live on a corner.
Avatar Thu. 1/4/18 10:59am βrian:

Heh, we ruled out corner lots for that reason, partly.

Avatar Thu. 1/4/18 11:01am glenn:

the worst part is faithfully shoveling the sidewalk in front of my house, as proscribed by city fiat, and then having a city snowplow come by and depositing the snow from the street back on the sidewalk. fuckers.
Avatar Thu. 1/4/18 11:02am Webhamster Henry:

Go find Asimov's "The Clock We Live On" for a clear history of time!
Avatar Thu. 1/4/18 11:02am queems:

@melinda i really want to do that! my mom keeps nagging me to call the guy down the street because i have so many faulty body parts, but i'm really stubborn
Avatar Thu. 1/4/18 11:04am glenn:

there's good stubborn, and there's bad stubborn. that sounds like bad stubborn.
  Thu. 1/4/18 11:04am Listener Robert:

As a young child I thought of the year as starting in March because my birthday and spring. February seems like an ending, not a beginning.
Avatar Thu. 1/4/18 11:04am queems:

@glenn you're correct
Avatar Thu. 1/4/18 11:05am βrian:

Proscribed? I wish! Our city has been investigating special plows that will spare driveway entrances, but they're too expensive for the current budgets.
Avatar Thu. 1/4/18 11:06am Webhamster Henry:

Before 1752, the British Civil Year began on March 25th.
dates from January till then were considered the previous year! read up on "Old Style" years!
Avatar Thu. 1/4/18 11:06am melinda:

I'd do it, queems! I still shovel my own sidewalk because I need the excercise, and I was really lucky to have a neighbor with a plowing business who would do neighbors' driveways just out of neighborliness for several years, but he fled to Florida this year and I had to face up to the fact that I need the extra help enough that it's worth the $.
Avatar Thu. 1/4/18 11:07am Vivian:

Living in GA, I miss the change of seasons. Fall colors are brief and winter is blah. Here in Atl, it is 5 degrees warmer than NYC. If it is going to be this cold, give me some snow. Whenever I hear about snow in NY, it makes me miss home.
Avatar Thu. 1/4/18 11:07am glenn:

i'm pretty sure that it would be far less expensive to just put heating cables in the streets and sidewalks, a la radiant flooring. a few extra drains to handle the runoff, boom done.
Avatar Thu. 1/4/18 11:07am Scraps:

Doorways are good to have a god watching over them! For one thing, doorways make you forget things. When you pass a doorway, you have to concentrate if you’re wanting to remember something that you specifically passed a doorway to find, otherwise you may forget. This happens to me constantly. I should remember to pray to Janus.

I have somewhere in the garage Daddy's 16 mm.movie of my 1st birthday, a 3 day party at home in the Bronx in 1955 because guests were snowed in.
Avatar Thu. 1/4/18 11:10am northguineahills:

The leaves started changing colors down here around Xmas, yeah, I really miss the change of seasons. At least I can revel in this cold spell and wear sweaters briefly.
Avatar Thu. 1/4/18 11:10am queems:

@melinda i think having to deal with this snowstorm is going to push me over the edge into having someone else do it. i also have a snowblower but i'm not sure how to use it. that would probably be a good thing to figure out.
Avatar Thu. 1/4/18 11:10am Wild Neil:

I don't have a sidewalk, only a driveway I have to snowplow sometimes. My neighbors do 100%, I just do enough to get by. Who cares, its snow?!
Avatar Thu. 1/4/18 11:11am northguineahills:

Well, where you're at, Wild Neil, it seems a snowplow would be necessary. You get crap tons of lake effect snow up there.

Avatar Thu. 1/4/18 11:17am glenn:

I mean "snow blow". We don't get too much snow in Niagara County near Lockport, NY, nor does Buffalo really. Its where the Bill stadium is (Orchard Park) and also Cheektowaga and Hamburg. But thanks for your concern, NGH!
Avatar Thu. 1/4/18 11:22am Priscilla:

I think I need an HDMI to USB adapter to watch Kanopy movies. Tech-savvy kid was here for Christmas & was able to figure it out with their laptop.

Could amplifiers trigger a quake? Hmm.
Avatar Thu. 1/4/18 11:30am queems:

@threemoons i can't even imagine how obnoxious that entire situation is for you guys. i was lucky enough to live almost equidistant between 30th and astoria blvd, but most people are NOT that lucky. regardless, congratulations on the well-earned snow day!
Avatar Thu. 1/4/18 11:31am Threemoons:

@Queems thank you. The past few weeks in the extreme cold it has been BEYOND crap. Hating it and hating the MTA. As mentioned earlier, NO shuttle busses and NO ADA compliant fixes, just cosmetic crapola.
Avatar Thu. 1/4/18 11:33am queems:

@threemoons i don't understand how they can get away with not running shuttle buses. is it because broadway and 39th are open?

Avatar Thu. 1/4/18 11:41am Threemoons:

Dale--sorry. My Mom lives in such an area, and I can tell you, your $$ is going to buy coffee for 12 guys standing around drinking coffee for 12 hours a day while they watch it snow/stand around because it's too cold to pour concrete.
