We have Henry Flynt and Eugene Chadbourne amongst many others to thank for pioneering that field....

Amelia Island is in Nassau County (a good 15mils/25km from Jax city limits), the county north of Duval (Jax), the most NE county in FL. I've spent many a fine time there. The northern portion has a rural/small town feel, which seems miles away from the suburban hell that is the Jacksonville metropolis.

I'm sending Ruth there. She's had three vacations canceled or interrupted in the last year, and she only wanted one!

heading to Tennessee this weekend; i wonder if there's any live music in my dad's tiny town
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:57pm

Thanks for sharing these David. I've found decent improv/experimental/noise artists touring down here, but avant americana is hard to find.... (I'd have told my wife to hit this one if I knew of it advance).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:57pm
david w:

Hey gzette! Agreed. Anna RG blew my mind, but the whole evening of 21 Dec knocked me over.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:00pm
david w:

@steveo, tell us what you find. there has to be some local action right? when you are in the middle of it, even the bad local bar band can be a revelation.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:01pm
steveo:

yeah, checking in with my with-it aunt; there is at least one small music bar in town...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:02pm
david w:

@ngh: is avant americana a thing? stretching these styles is not unusual tho there is always that limit that makes the orthodox cringe. i so love crossing that limit...

northguineahills:

When Ruth goes there, tell here to also go the Cumberland Island National Seashore, the next barrier island north of Amelia in Georgia. It used to be a Carnegie vacation plantation but the mansion burned down in the 50s and they donated to the national park service. So, it's all abandoned, there are wild horses, and the ruins of the Carnegie mansion and older buildings still dot the island. Plus, I believe they only allow 75 people on the island per day, and you can only make it by ferry. It's a favorite nature haunt of mine.

her brother was a great old time banjo player, but alas, he's no longer with us
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:05pm

@david: I believe henry flynt and in some examples, jim o'rourke have demonstrated that it does. Others may bristle at the label.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:07pm
david w:

Thanks! I'm putting the NGH travelogue in my great tips folder to be acted upon without prejudice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:08pm

Why did Henry Flynt cancel his gig at Experimental Intermedia last month? Anybody know?

(the rooom mate I moved to NYC w/ grew up on Amelia Island).

Caught the word Cumberland and remembered there's an American Music Festival there in Summer. Would love to go there; old style mostly but experimenters might show up, don't know.

With a very small tweek, this sounds like Don Van Vliet!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:25pm
david w:

Maybe he'll move into a trailer and start a band!
Avatar 4:27pm

Makes me realize Van Vlliet must have had a vast knowledge of both the Harry Smith and Lomax collections.

Of course, this is also a little like buying wine for a freeway underpass camper and hanging out with him for a couple of hours.
Not making a joke. I listened to a number of them outside of my studio for years. Not for hours though, just minutes, usually.

Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

This week: Brand new collage!

Exploring music of my childhood, my father's favorite symphony, recent dance hits, inspirational word bits, and trying to read relevant nutritional lists without losing my composure... With dozens of sound sources blended during the performance through a continuously active improvisational layering process I've apparently cultivated into my core over the last 23.9 years... It's all an experiment in absurdity-beauty.

Come on over and say something new! wfmu.org...
