Hello! Nice opener. Some themes seem to transcend time.

Evening/Morning all. Always nice to look forward to this show after weeks that are becoming seemingly more complex.

@ericinmichigan: maybe not up late listening to a Phish show, but up late listening to lazy lightening/supplication? ;)

I usually get to hear a few tracks, fall asleep, then listen to the archives all week. And I keep revisiting my favorite shows. September 19, 2016 is phenomenal, by the way, in case anyone hasn't heard it! :-D

no no no - It was 9/19/16 with Love, Relatively Clean Rivers, The Byrds... it was the first "Hello, California listeners!" show! Definitely not sad!

Jeff, what's your favorite Grateful Dead year of the 80s?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:30am

I finally watched "Long Strange Trip" on Amazon. Excellent!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:31am

AND - I just watched that John Coltrane doc on Netflix. It has been on my list for a while now, but I finally watched it now. Winter break allows for these things, haha. Very inspiring!
Avatar 12:31am
Jeff Conklin:

1989
Avatar 12:32am
Erik in Michigan:

Coltrane Doc was OK - but the amount of talking heads was a bit much for me.
Avatar 12:33am
Erik in Michigan:

yeah, 89 was a good year
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:33am
tuner fish:

I mean - I consider myself a big Coltrane fan, and, from the trailer, I wasn't that impressed, but of course I HAD to watch it. I liked the segment with the Japanese guy who met Coltrane in Nagasaki. That was very touching. I think it was pretty well-made, but of course it wasn't a comprehensive account of his life and works. It would be nice to see one of those someday.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:35am

"Ken Burns presents: 10 DVD's OF JOHN COLTRANE!" ... THAT'S what I want! haha
  12:37am
bbb:

Hi all! Happy new year (hopefully)...Really digging this El Congreso song.
  12:39am
bbb:

haha, used Google translate for the lyrics to that song: You rebel but you lie. I no longer believe in your song. The city has bewitched you. The swamp closed. You like to live the cage. You like to offer your head. You believe you are the king of the land Andrajo of nature. Man of the city, medium Master of the trivial, dwarf. Black butterfly small piece at night. You will see every day the sun gridded by windows and twisted beams. You will see your eyes so hated The panorama of buildings like fog. Receive my song and leave Or die in your law, dwarf.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:40am

Definitely the Spanish "Like A Rolling Stone" haha

I'm still feeling out the 80s dead but my impression is that Jerry is pretty bad in the middle

  12:44am
Agent Peter:

How is "80's Dead" a thing?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:45am
tuner fish:

The only exposure to the GD I have is from this show, and the Sirius Grateful Dead Channel. And a few friends who like them. But, yeah, every time "The 80's" shows up, my first reaction is "Oh no!" but sometimes it is amazing. I mean, sometimes the NINETIES are amazing! I just heard a show from 91 this week that blew me away! Excellent band! Just kept on going! Is that what it's about? Just following that spark until it the light is no more?
  12:46am
Dean:

As I've mentioned several times on Uncle Michael's show on the Drummer stream, I attended every Grateful Dead show from the very beginning. I'll concur with the '89 call, though I also recall fondly shows from '84 and '86.
Avatar 12:46am
Jeff Conklin:

plenty of amazing in the 80s and 90s don't listen to anyone who says there isn't. All due respect, Agent Peter.

Warlocks? That's ridiculous! I'm not that old.

  12:49am

I just managed to catch all the shows--every one of them--as the Dead from the get-go. No biggie.
Avatar 12:53am
Erik in Michigan:

Dean what's your favorite Vince song?
  12:54am
Agent Peter:

Which two years in the 80's were most like one another? The idea that one entire decade had a distinct and uniform identity is a massive over-simplification.
Avatar 12:55am
Jeff Conklin:

Oh, I see what youre getting at, Agent. You have a point. As im sure you know people dismiss the decade out of hand without good inspecion...
  12:56am
Dean:

Hard to argue with his work on "White Punks on Dope."
  12:59am
Agent Peter:

The only reason for isolating that decade is if someone had strong feelings about Brent Mydland.

bbb:

I'm sure the Dead afficionados already know this, but I was just reading about "He's Gone" and found out it was initially written about Mickey Hart's father Lenny who managed their money and took off with $155,000. Lenny disappeared and was found a year later as a preacher! That's why Mickey Hart left the band in '71. Woah...deep.
Avatar 1:31am
Jeff Conklin:

Yeah, that's one of the big holes in the documentary. Totally changed the band. Great doc though!
  1:32am
bbb:

I still need to see it!
  1:34am

If you really want to know about stuff like that, you are better off reading one of many books than watching that doc

It's directed by Guillermo del Toro, whose previous films I wasn't that into. But the trailer for The Shape of Water looks great and it's already been nominated for a bunch of awards.
