This music makes a great accompaniment to writing about the glottochronology of Uralic languages and Paleo-Siberian isolates.

"Aki Takase and Lauren Newton correspond to and contradict one another with sounds, tones, vocalizations, words. They converse in fantasy languages, plunge into areas of deep emotion and fly off into the abstract realm of sounds. And – not forgetting: they have something which has become rare, not only in improvised music, but in the world of art in general, because it defies reckoning: they have a sense of humour."

Dan Bodah:

@yippie, what's on the Naftali Tzvi Margolies Abulafia record? Ningunim? Or can't you say?
Avatar 7:38pm
Tom Miller:

@ledzeppelin sucks, what language(s) is it?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:41pm
Dan Bodah:

That appears to be pinyin for Mandarin but no idea what he's saying...maybe something about a cat? (I believe māo is cat in Mandarin)

Dan Bodah:

I love those downward yelps like they did in that Mystere song.

JakeGould:

@DanBodah: Naftali Tzvi Margolies Abulafia was a Rabbi on the Lower East Side who worked with Harry Smith on recording 15 (!!!) discs of his cantorial work. But after he died, his family stood in the way of it being released. They did not want it played as pop music “…on 14th Street…” They wanted the music to be sent to universities. But everything was screwed up and the story of his grandson trying to preserve his grandfather’s history is what’s made news in recent years. This NPR piece explains it well.

JakeGould:

And to be honest with you, I’m kind of sick of how—I hate to say it—“cultural imperialism” fetishizes works of non-Western cultures as well. But as much as I can get upset about something being fetishized, having it fall into the cracks of history is even worse.
  7:45pm
yippie:

the grandson passed away as an old man but he wanted to respect his grandfather's wishes to prevent it from being sold on shabbas
  7:47pm
yippie:

ive seen it called "talmudic legends and liturgical songs" or just "prayers and chants"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:48pm
Dan Bodah:

Thanks for sharing that story @Jake & @yippie. One of my good friends is a cantor, I'll have to pass it along to him.
  7:50pm
JakeGould:

@DanBodah: Cool! What baffles is how Jewish culture has this strong thread of archival and preservation… But then it still suffers from dysfunctional bullshit that would basically hide stuff like this from the world.

yippie:

if you can find it---- maybe ask doug schulkind, he might have it. i know some of his descendants still living in nyc
  7:52pm

Jake and Yippe and now Susanne Rosenberg have me wondering - how much of Music (styles, techniques, methods, and all that technical stuff) is in some way due to Religion? It's got to be a significant amount

Thanks for this exciting show. I like the voice of foreign countries. I've always heard rascal rap music, where I live. Followed by sirens and gunfire. Before I was looking for an apartment here, I was told that East Oakland was good.
