his singing is a lot like that of someone i know named Nick, who plays accordion and has a beautiful singing voice, and a speech "impediment". i feel certain that, unfortunately, some people will not get past a speech impediment, regardless of whatever other qualities exist.
similarly, my own sister told me once that she'd never see Loudon Wainwright perform again, and even doesn't enjoy his music as much now, because of the "bizarre facial expressions he makes" on stage.

hell, the first time i heard Neil Young's voice ("helpless") i honestly didn't get why this person would sing! - what the hell is this?! (i was about 8 or 9)
- but it didn't bother my older brother so i knew i should listen and it only took 1-2 more listens to be completely beyond that preconceived notion of what a man should sing like. in fact i quickly became very attracted to music with "less than ideal" voices.

A wonderful opera show on KPFK in LA c.1980s-90s, hosted by Fred Hyatt, The Opera Show, once aired a Durante recording amid recitals by Met superstars. It was utterly right.

At age 13, when my family was driving from LA to Jax, I convinced my parents to hit OK, as it would be my 47th state. I'm not sure why, but they agreed (even though it was hours out of the way) went north of I-10 and we spent a few hours in OK, and we hit so many moths and bugs, we had scape the yuck off, centimeters at a time. Fun time.

Same here, Larry. For some reason, by age 8, my parents trusted me w/ out destinations, be of natural or historical importance. I planned out our vacations. He got a lot of time off in b/tn deployments in the Navy. Who the hell trust an 8 year-old to plan a road-trip vacation? I was lucky.

ngh, I don't have any Phil Ochs trivia! I do like his songs though. Especially Crucifixion. I tried to learn it on guitar (I'm a novice guitar player) but I can never remember all the words!

I ended up getting a history degree. My parents were cool w/ me planning our trips. I wish teaching history brought in the dough, but I love environmental spatial mapping, so I ended up ok (I spend a good 18 hours a week reading history or listening to history podcasts).

i did a report on Phil Ochs in 10th grade hs, "1960's history". i may not remember everything. i do remember saying he "became frustrated with the lack of progress of the revolution so killed himself." i think wherever i read that somebody took some liberties.
