i remember a worm sticking out of my siamese kitties butt one time - i know it was saying 'daylight! free at last.' pulled it out with a kleenex - pet owners do wacky things.

The 3 dogs we've had since I got married have all been rescues and all have been great dogs. German Shepard, Beagle and now a Manchester Terrier / Besinji mix

Hello!

Don't forget rescue cats!
Avatar 7:13pm
Chucks Paranormal:

The German Shepard we got, back in 1999, was a 6 month old puppy that was in a kill shelter in NYC. Somebody there contacted a person she knew at a local shelter and said they had a great dog that she felt would be a great pet, but time was running out. The local shelter was not supposed to take in animals from other shelters, so they created a cover story that the dog was found locally running on a street. So we lucked out and so did the dog that he was not put down at such an early age. He lived until he was 11, cancer ended up taking him. But one of the greatest pets I ever had.
  7:14pm
Emily:

@queems! I can absolutely promise, with no exception, that there will be no Sarah McLaughlan on this show.
  7:15pm
Emily:

Hi everybody! @Dale—yikes! Worms!
Avatar 7:15pm
kimzilla:

Spoilers. There is a gross paw story, but he's ok.
Avatar 7:16pm
kimzilla:

My dog had worms once, but I didn't know, I kept wondering why I kept finding wild rice in my bed. It wasn't rice.
  7:16pm
Emily:

GASP! EWWWWWWWWWWWW!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:16pm
melinda:

I admire her for throwing herself into rescue right after her dog died. After my kitty died following a couple of years of kidney disease I was sad but felt a weight had been lifted, too.
Avatar 7:17pm
kimzilla:

Oh, I forgot this sad story.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:17pm
queems:

for every sad animal i hope there are 10 happy animals
  7:17pm
Emily:

@melinda I totally get that—I had an old cat who was riddled with medical issues for years. She was truly dear to me, but there was a sense of relief in finally letting her go.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:18pm
queems:

my family just lost our cat to cancer 2 weeks ago (we had him since i was a senior in high school) it was devastating, but i agree about the sense of relief
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:19pm
dale:

emily - if they were an outdoor animal first like many of our pets they WILL have worms from rodents.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:21pm
dale:

we lost our 16 year old buttercup three weeks ago to kidney failure. it's never easy but you learn how to not freak out and keep them purring until they can't anymore.
  7:21pm
Emily:

@dale mmhm, that makes sense—I remember my rescue kitty had worms from being outside for years, but I never saw one actually EXIT HER BODY!
  7:22pm
Emily:

Like ALIEN!
  7:22pm
Emily:

(That’s how I’m imagining it)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:22pm
Greg from ZONE 5:

So sorry to hear that, queems. Fortunately I'll never have to experience that, as I have given my cat explicit instructions never to die under any circumstances.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:23pm
dale:

emily, i'm sure the worm was just as shocked by the sight of me as i was by it.
  7:23pm
Emily:

@queems I’m so sorry—that is never easy, no matter how old or sick they are.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:24pm
queems:

@greg thanks! although i hate to be the one to tell you this, but cats are typically not the best listeners
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:24pm
dale:

'what is this race of strange giants out side of my warm space?'
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:25pm
queems:

thanks, emily! my mom is pouring all of her extra love into her other cat
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:25pm
melinda:

My sister's cat was expected to die from kidney failure within a week but she's still kickin' over a month later. They don't know why.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:26pm
dale:

queems - i hope you got to be with her kitty at the very end. it's not easy but they appreciate it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:28pm
queems:

@dale i got to say my goodbyes a couple days before, but i couldn't be there on the last day. i think he got the message, though. hope you are holding up ok, too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:29pm
dale:

melinda - we had a cat who presented in kidney failure who soldiered on over a year. his b.u.n. and creatinine levels stabilized. we gave him epakitin powder in his food but it was probably just not quite his time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:31pm
dale:

queems - she's buried in the back with her family and a lot of nice perennial bulbs to remind us of her every spring.
Avatar 7:35pm
kimzilla:

Sounds like we have some friends of the felines on the message board!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:35pm
dale:

i recently read that there is a high depression and suicide rate among veterinarians. i get it.
Avatar 7:38pm
kimzilla:

I listened to that episode of DSM Dale. That was a sad episode.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:38pm
dale:

kimzilla - pets are less likely to be jerkoffs than people. some are but not a high percentage.
  7:39pm
Karen:

@dale That’s so sad because pets bring so much joy to people. They can increase life expectancy of their humans more than spouses! Yet vets who help people care for their furry friends are at greater risk for suicide?!
Avatar 7:39pm
kimzilla:

I think if you work in rescue you learn that humans are awful, really really awful.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:40pm
dale:

i had to look up what DSM means - wnyc i assume and i'll look for it. thanks for the heads up kimzilla.
Avatar 7:40pm
kimzilla:

From what I recall from that episode it was a specific issue in Texas, and with Vet Assistants. Low salary, many hours, lots of PTSD. Terrible combo.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:41pm
chris:

hi, everyone. my little rescue puppers is listening and wants to meet all the dogs he's hearing.
  7:42pm
Karen:

It’s like when they don’t give lifeguards sufficient breaks to help keep them vigilant. Doctors and veterinarians and health workers need to have support systems so they don’t burn out.

@Greg from Zone 5 haha, so am I!
  7:44pm
Karen:

@kimzilla But think about the awesome people involved in rescue too! (I know I’m a mush. I realize the sad, bad people whom cause us to need to make up for our species, but then after being moved to do something, I try to focus on the good humans to keep me going.)
  7:47pm
Emily:

Sorry guys!
  7:48pm
Karen:

We’re renters right now, so we can’t foster yet. We’re not even supposed to have any furry pets, but we’re looking into changing that. A friend fosters and is helping trying to fit a dog to our home as soon as we can legally have one. She’s who’s right in the world by helping find homes for pups!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:51pm
dale:

if dogs have luggage is it high-end puuci?
Avatar 7:52pm

@Karen, you are so right. It's all the parts that make this system work.
