This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

Randomness apropos of nothing but lagoons, when I went to Jamaica, I stayed at a friend's family home on a hill overlooking where the Blue Lagoon was filmed in Port Antonio. No other tourists, it was nice. Saw Burning Spear at a local festival.

Avatar 7:23pm

We used to go to Trader Vic's, on Wilshire. I had a great ceramic ashtray from there with a portly man in a sarong chasing a pretty girl in a sarong. It was funny but many kinds of incorrect. Got smashed in an earthquake. The ashtray, not me.
Avatar 7:24pm
hyde:

@Flash it *is* a classic, and actually is now one of the last remnants of what once was a kind of great strip of roadside Americana. much else is gone. the Hilltop closed. the mini golf place with the orange dinosaur is gone. the weird ship restaurant is also lost to time. not sure if the Golden Banana is still there or not....
Avatar 7:24pm
geezerette:

I love Ruth Etting.
Avatar 7:25pm
βrian:

Sesame-seed-coated deep fried chicken and "dolphin-fish." That's what we used to get at Trader Vic's Chicago.
Avatar 7:25pm
Flash Strap:

the golf place is gone? oh no, it was one of the last
Avatar 7:25pm

also, i really meant that the food at Kowloon is terrible ;)
Avatar 7:26pm

it is, it is. so is the music, usually

NGH, Bongolian BBQ is great!
Avatar 7:33pm
hyde:

did i ever mention (sigh, i probably have) that I got an old Trader Vic's cocktail book out of the library and it had this weird drink in it called "gin and calumus" which was (as i remember, the book has since been withdrawn from circulation) basically gin with a sweet flag root in it. sweet flag is a native american plant with supposed stimulant/psychoactive properties. i have kind of wanted to try that ever since....

also, I like East Boston and Chelsea a lot, they used to be very affordable and had cool shit everywhere. not sure what it's like now
Avatar 7:37pm

i whistle pretty often. i don't know how accurate i am. probably not so much. i used to whistle complex arrangements, whistling on both the inhale & exhale. somewhere along the way i stopped doing it and now i pretty much can't.

I think teeth arrangement/spacing is a factor

i'm a pretty decent whistler myself, but can't do that 2-finger wolf whistle thing

Wow, Lagoony tonight; and talking whistling. I can whistle out & in, helps for endurance. Sadly, I don't know how to do that real loud whistle some do with 2 fingers in mouth ("sweeu uuuitte")

TDK definitely true on the endurance. i think my presently compromised endurance has something to do with why last time i tried (maybe last summer) i couldn't do it. that was the first time i'd tried to do it in many years.

(i will have excellent endurance again by mid-summer though; so i'll try again.)

"The Shape of Water" that's it. // Coel: I don't see many new films, and have a backlog of *old* ones I haven't seen...so much to see. A movie in my head now: couples down by the lagoon patio bar under the palm trees, by the tiki lamps, doing a cha cha.

my head movie is a pizza on my counter with several cloves of raw garlic next to it and a thick dark stout...to follow the walnuts and saurkraut i'm eating now.

I get a kick out of Rudy, but don’t find a lot of appeal. The two heard here this evening are doin’ it for me, though. Nice.
