Favoriting May 7, 2018: Anya Kamenetz, author, "The Art of Screen Time"

Listen to this show: Pop-up listen Pop-up player!

This week: Anya Kamenetz, author of the new book The Art of Screen Time: How Your Family Can Balance Digital Media and Real Life

Anya's summary (with a nod to Michael Pollan):

Enjoy screens.
Not too much.
Mostly with others.

Pointers to Anya's work:

Anya's homepage

@anya1anya on Twitter

Anya's NPR stories, including the recent Kids, Meet Alexa, Your AI Mary Poppins

Review of "The Art of Screen Time", by Kayt Frisch. "Spoiler: PUT YOUR PHONE AWAY - distracted driving is statistically the most likely way to kill your primary school-aged child."

Screen time in the news

The Teenage Social Media Trap: "Instagram, Snapchat, and Facebook play a key role in how teens measure and manage social success; it also finds that the overuse of social media may bring added risks to an adolescent’s mental health."

Parenting the Fortnite addict: "How should parents step in? Instead of being against playing Fortnite, some adults position themselves as being for other important activities, such as completing homework, being physically active, participating in family life and getting enough sleep."

Other tech news

Searching for a Future Beyond Facebook, by Jacob Silverman: "Facebook has accomplished a neat trick in the last fourteen years, draping itself in humanitarian intent while establishing a globe-straddling monopoly. In the name of connecting people, it has built the world’s largest surveillance apparatus, rivaled only by Google."

Ticketmaster to trial facial recognition technology at live venues (VentureBeat; see also the WSJ article.) Don't worry, says the article, it's purely for the “‘development of deeper customer relationships’ between fans, artists, venues, and teams. Moreover, Ticketmaster touts the technology as boosting safety and security.”

Satellite Project Draws Airbus, SoftBank, Bill Gates as Investors: investors "propose to build and launch some 500 small satellites intended to provide unmatched video coverage of the globe."

Today's outtro music selected by Greg Harrison, the brilliant designer who created the Techtonic t-shirt (coming soon to marathon donors!).
