Jason Candler of Street Band Legends, the Hungry March Band

Hear this show now: Pop-up listen Pop-up player! | Add or read comments

Hungry March Band (HMB) literally sprung to life at the Coney Island Mermaid Parade, their spiritual ground-zero... and maybe you've seen them wreaking havoc and joy at guerilla art events, subway parties, eccentric weddings, on the Staten Island Ferry or even in the climactic scene of John Cameron Mitchell's film Shortbus. New York's first and finest street brass band can turn any place into a carnival. But they also are just plain great musicians who concoct complex and powerful original compositions inspired by the Big Apple's cross-cultural melange.

So we're thrilled to have HMB sax player and producer Jason Candler on the show with us tonight to introduce the band's wonderful new album Running Through With the Sadness. (HMB and friends celebrate the album's release Friday night June 22nd at the Market Hotel.) Plus we'll hear highlights from HMB's debut appearance at WFMU's Monty Hall this past October as part of our annual HONK NYC!" extravaganza.

Good evening Rob and friends! My family enjoyed the show at the Issyra Gallery. Thank you Rob for the opportunity to experience it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:53pm Rob W:

That surf guitar is the influence of Peruvian chicha bands of the 60s and 70s - which our friend from Barbes Olivier Conan started with his band Chicha Libre and the Roots of Chicha comps he put out on his Barbes record label!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:53pm Rob W:

Olivier started the REVIVAL of interest in chicha music of course! As for chicha the drink - I believe he's a fan of that too...

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:13pm Rob W:

TDK60 - actually chicha is considered a subgenre of cumbia - although chicha bands didn't just play cumbia necessarily... just to make things confusing...
