ok, i'm back on this tab again. good morning shrunken fans! i found some juicy news articles for dissemination to the teeming hordes. it's the end of week one at this pet-sit, ready to see the second week go just as smoothly. this place is wet, green, and lush with birds and wildlife, i love it. there's a nest of Eastern Peewee babies in the carport. the parents are as active and any barn swallow could be against the two outside cats. the fledglings are ready to jump to freedom; i wonder what it is in their genes which directs them to stay for now, have another mouthful of flying bug.. this is my happiness for now.

catbirds are great!! i think the most fascinating of birds is the Pileated Woodpecker, followed by the Flicker family.

Jeffrey Davison:

Welcome jkeigh, TDK60, and all fans of vinyl, chromium dioxide, shellac, and what have you, per se, and so on, forthwith.
  6:42am
David in London:

@TDK - Being a Brit, I've never seen a catbird. Just looked at a picture online. What an elegant little thing.
Avatar 6:44am
Marshland:

Morning all. Are you at the Leigh-on-Sea Folk Festival this weekend David?
Avatar 6:47am
TDK60:

David in London. They do have sound similar to a cat.
  6:48am
David in London:

@Marshland - Sadly not. Rather stuck inside doing a sub-ed job this weekend. However, I have Wednesday off, and was planning to do the walk from Leigh back to Benfleet along the estuary path, which is a favourite of mine. Are you going?
Avatar 6:50am
TDK60:

Heheh, the last few bands' names sound like hippies.
Avatar 6:51am
Marshland:

Yes, I'll be going for the late sets this evening (9-11pm) and all day tomorrow, should be great.
  6:52am
David in London:

@TDK - Wow, I just listened to a sound file. It does sound exactly like a kitten. That's glorious!

David in London:

@Marshland - Thomas Truax is playing on Sunday. He's always a hoot. Damn, wish I could go. Have a rollicking folky old time yourself, though.
  6:55am
Zetti:

@testingwithfire Sorry for the late response, busy making breakfast. I live in Reeders, Pa near Tannersville, Stroudsburg.

Morning all! A bit late to this - but saw my first catbird a couple of weeks ago - a happy find on a bike ride
Avatar 6:57am

Thanks, yes, have seen Thomas play lots of times, mostly at the Railway Hotel in Sarfend. Am looking forward to seeing You Are Wolf & Stick in the Wheel of course.
  6:59am
David in London:

@Marshland - Are you based in Southend, then? I'm there reasonably regularly for work (as we have a small office there). Any excuse for a Rossi's ice cream...
Avatar 7:01am

@David in London - I'm in Canvey Island, so not far away.
Avatar 7:01am

@Marshland - Got it. Ah, the legend that is Canvey. I love that whole south Essex coast. It's such an amazing landscape.

@Zetti @spamoni wayback machine: One of Frank "Vanilla Bean" Balesteri's radio gigs before WFMU was at WVPO, a little AM station out of East Stroudsburg. I was lucky enough to hear his show there when I was in high school. 1979-80, so lots of amazing new music for him to play.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:14am

@Doobois if you blink you'll pass right thru
  7:17am
Zetti:

@spamoni Hi!, Very nice up there!

@testingwithfire. I clearly remember the Vanilla Bean, I called into the station (wfmu) several times to speak with him, once almost getting him tossed off the air for a second time. Was that radio station part of East Stroudsburg University? ESU still broadcasts on FM.
Avatar 7:21am

@ testingwithfire those were my Jersey years and WNTI out on Centenary College
  7:27am

It's Midsummer in parts of Europe right? People gather at Stonehenge or make bonfires in parts of France. St John the Baptist for some Christians.
Avatar 7:36am
annie:

i'm very fascinated by the rituals of old and the honoring of all souls passed and currently active. (and, yes, i mant to spell "passed" that way.) :-)
Avatar 7:39am
TDK60:

I think the Puritans in New England tried to stamp out any ancient/pagan celebrations so Amerikinz don't celebrate but I've heard various Native groups have similar rites.
  7:40am
Zetti:

In 2015 the collage sold the station to NPR, not telling the DJs and other lifelong volunteers. They showed up to find the studio dark and doors locked. Could you imagine that happening to WFMU?
Avatar 7:42am
annie:

those damn puritans...i i wish england had banished them to australia instead, well, if they hadn't i'd have had completely different life... oh well, i'm glad to be murkan. what station Zetti?

Avatar 7:44am
annie:

looks like talk schmalk
  7:45am
Zetti:

Yes, WNTI is still on the air but not the same.
  7:46am
David in London:

@ Annie - We've got plenty of puritans left in old England, so we didn't banish them all... But spend a solstice at Avebury (THE stone circle in England, forget Stonehenge) and thankfully the old ways are still very much alive.
Avatar 7:49am
testingwithfire:

@zetti I'm not sure about the station's ownership; I remember that Frank's was really the only listenable show on the station, so I doubt it was a college station.
Avatar 7:50am

@David in London I've been watching the Royal Ascot all week what a show they've put on
  7:53am
Zetti:

Be back shortly, out to collect the eggs and clean the coop.
  7:58am

@spamoni - Yes, it's quite the event of the season, isn't it? I read somewhere this week that they are enforcing a strict sock rule on the gentlemen.
