Hi. Sorry I didn't show up last time. 5 hours is too much for me.

Gateway Jamaican tunes here...CHUNE!

Lots more to come!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10pm
chresti:

nice version of Johnny Too Bad
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:11pm
Funky16Corners:

The original (as far as I know)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11pm
coelacanth∅:

seems i was usually led to a section of the fence where there was no gate
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13pm
coelacanth∅:

(though i did hear johnny too bad first by Bunny Wailer, like many people i assume)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14pm
chresti:

I heard it first on "The Harder They Come"
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:16pm
Funky16Corners:

Yes, this is THOSE Hooters
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:16pm
Funky16Corners:

Very early days
Avatar 🥁 10:17pm
Erica:

I was about to ask if this was a different "Hooters".
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:17pm
Funky16Corners:

They were a whole different kind of band in the beginning
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18pm
coelacanth∅:

i don't think i heard the entire harder they come soundtrack until about 1981.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19pm
coelacanth∅:

(and i wasn't too impressed, in general!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20pm
chresti:

I think it was around 80-81
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23pm
chresti:

I saw the movie in a outdoor cinema near monte carlo/nice area on the beach, in 1980
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24pm
coelacanth∅:

i had (still have) a friend who was into reggae in the mid/late 70s turned me on to burning spear, black uhuru, yellowman....i knew Bunny Wailer's solo work better than i knew Marley for a few years there. the harder they come soundtrack was too poppy for me when i heard it.
i like most of it now though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24pm
chresti:

not Nice, Menton

I saw Harder They Come in Santa Cruz in the 70s and it blew me away

Used to be on Night Flight all the time
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29pm
coelacanth∅:

i saw that film at some reggae festival...or at the count basie theatre during a Bob Marley birthday event... i don't remember for sure, and i don't remember much of the movie!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30pm
chresti:

A show on KCRW in the 80s, Reggae Beat, was where I caught the fever, Hank Holmes portion of the show I would record, and so on and so forth.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:32pm
Funky16Corners:

I dig all kinds of reggae, but mainly collect ska, rocksteady, and Jamaican covers of American soul and funk
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32pm
coelacanth∅:

chresti kcrw is that different than wkcr?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34pm
chresti:

A friend of mine says he has/had a MASSIVE collection from Jamaica
KCRW, Santa Monica College-maybe a sister station
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36pm
coelacanth∅:

wkcr is columbia university in ny. last time i listened was mostly jazz but would have specials (as on Marley's birthday)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39pm
chresti:

I stopped listening in the 90s, after Hank left. I would try to find the tracks I wrote down from the cassettes of his set.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40pm
coelacanth∅:

i have what i think is a respectable reggae collection, but i know it's pretty dismal speck compared to some collections
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40pm
chresti:

The one that I couldn't find was "Hello Honey" by the Maytals
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:41pm
Funky16Corners:

I have a buddy that was deep into funk for years ad then did a deep, deep dive into reggae 45s
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42pm
chresti:

It's a logical transition
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45pm
chresti:

The harmonies are what got me hooked
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:45pm
Jeff Ash:

I am wanting jerk chicken and a Cold Stripe now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45pm
coelacanth∅:

i never collected reggae 45s. i would if i had lots of money. i do have many old comps though, with a lot of those groovy rocksteady singles on 'em.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:46pm
Jeff Ash:

I mean a cold Red Stripe.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:46pm
Funky16Corners:

@Jeff - That sounds really good!
Avatar 🥁 10:47pm
Erica:

Sorry for keeping quiet. Not sure how long I'll be here for.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47pm
chresti:

yeah there are great compilations- I would look for a song I was looking for and grab it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48pm
chresti:

patties?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49pm
coelacanth∅:

for a while i bought about any vintage comp i found. i figured there's be something to make it worth it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50pm
coelacanth∅:

(i was always into albums anyway, but mainly i did that because i had little knowledge of what to look for)
Avatar 🥁 10:52pm
Erica:

I love the organ keyboard on this one.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:53pm
Funky16Corners:

Yeah, it's nice, isn't it?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53pm
chresti:

I think the first comp for me was a blank Trojan with "Queen of the World" on it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53pm
coelacanth∅:

Johnny Nash broke through though in the us. i got the album at a very young age but except for "i can see clearly now" it mostly bored me
...Peter Tosh was when i really perked my ears up, because of his militant politics.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54pm
coelacanth∅:

who's that chresti?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:55pm
Funky16Corners:

Johnny Nash was American. From Texas. He had a hit in the 60s in Jamaica and fell in love with the sound
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56pm
chresti:

Claudette Miller(?)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57pm
coelacanth∅:

ha yeah i think i did read that in "catch a fire" but that Marley helped him a lot.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:58pm
Funky16Corners:

He had a bunch of hits in the 60s. He veen had his own label, Joda. One of the earliest Cowsills 45s was on Joda
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58pm
chresti:

and Lloyd
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59pm
coelacanth∅:

whoa -Johnny Nash did?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00pm
chresti:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01pm
coelacanth∅:

...maybe i have it backwards! maybe Nash assisted Marley to get through...but then, to what...Blackwell?
-or maybe that book is as full of tall tales as it seems!
(-or maybe i'm just very tired)
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:03pm
Funky16Corners:

Nash recorded with Marley early on, but the Wailers had already had some success during the ska days.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06pm
coelacanth∅:

cool, chresti. i thought you were saying there was a song called "queen of the world" that grabbed you; but that's the comp.

Larry i know they did... i don't trust what i remember about the connection.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08pm
coelacanth∅:

(it may've been some royalty issue with Nash recording those Marley songs...but my brain will hurt if i think about it much more!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08pm
chresti:

there might be a comp with that title somewhere
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:10pm
Funky16Corners:

I'll have to go back and check the chronology.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10pm
chresti:

my copy had that title because I wrote it on the front with a sharpie
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13pm
coelacanth∅:

chresti that discogs page is confusing! "1 composition, 16 tracks"? what does that mean?! and if it's a comp why doesn't it list the tracks?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16pm

Big Shot had one of the great label designs
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:20pm
Jeff Ash:

"Very good," indeed, as written on the label!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20pm
coelacanth∅:

Larry i just read the wikipedia entree on Johnny Nash and it has an in-detailed overview of what you're saying. (i'm sure i've read that before but i forgot) -the other involvements i'm having trouble recalling the details of i must've read in "catch a fire"; which is in this house i'm in but it's a poorly written book with almost no order and i wont hope to find what i'm looking for in any brief amount of time.
...it makes sense Nash is from the us though, judging by his (very safe) sound on that album.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20pm
chresti:

Ya Such a treasure!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23pm
coelacanth∅:

uh, i meant "UN-detailed...jeez)

- so that was your first, chresti?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25pm
