I grew up listening to Hawaiian music. Three of my great uncles were obsessed with it and had a band. I was quite young so I never thought to ask them what inspired them being that the three brothers were Italian. They're gone now but I still have some recordings of them somewhere!

In the “West” there are multiple things that point to the “East” being so special:
• Facing East while praying in Judaism.
• Facing East while praying in Islam.
• People who don’t align with major Western faiths who look to the people of the “East” as having all kinds of magic and wisdom.

I think the only time I can recall anyone considering the “East” in a dark/negative way was when referring to Eastern European countries.

I grew up in “East Brighton” in Brooklyn which is now basically just “Brighton Beach” and we were all considered street trash. “West Brighton” is where the people who were equally poor—but mainly lived in Trump Village—lived. Predominantly bullies and poor people who thought they were “middle class” when they weren’t. East/West divisions are fascinating.

Well, if you talk about cowboys you always have to remember the world of the cowboys were immediately in the aftermath of the U.S. Civil War. So you basically had all of these crazy soldiers running around with no wars to fight, desperate for work and suffering from PTSD. So no wonder they always got into fights, hung out with hookers at saloons and—let’s face it—were pretty racist.

Sounds like a scene from Monty Python's Architect Sketch: "Did you say 'rotating knives'?"
  1:42pm
JakeGould:

@Mayuko: Ha! Indeed. I saw some question online about how a Muslim should deal with “facing East” if they are in space. They have to pray like 5 or more times a day so it’s a big deal. And the conclusion was basically they merely have to face in the direction of Earth in general because in space Earth specific references to east, west, north and south don’t mean squat.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:43pm

@Mayuko: Also, the facing East while praying thing is a Western thing. It basically all refers to facing in the direction of Jerusalem or Mecca.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:44pm
Dropof Goldensun:

@Mayuko - When at the North Pole you can pray to the West, East and South all at the same time!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:46pm
coelacanth∅:

...but whichever way you face, you're facing mecca. (unless you're facing into space, or you're in mecca, facing away from it)

Avatar 1:46pm
northguineahills:

@Mayuko: at the North Pole, any direction is technically east towards Mecca. There is even an app to help Muslim astronauts in the international space station to pray towards Mecca. But it seems like you'd have to move a lot, as the velocity it travels makes such relational directions fleeting in reference to this planet.

My religion transcends space time and direction - I worship Funyuns
  1:50pm
JakeGould:

@Mayuko: A lot of religion is based on being controlled and asking permission. So in every day life, someone who is faithful might seem okay. But then in extreme cases, the basic questions—that many of us would consider basic common sense—become big crisis of faith situations.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:51pm
fred:

@coel: Instants Chavirés is my fave venue, and it sits just outside of Paris. It's a common joke among born-there Parisians that newcomers are afraid to cross the city limits for fear they wouldn't be let back in. It's more than a joke, sadly, they feel it's beneath their newfound (baseless) status

Actually, when you are standing exactly at the north pole, any way you face is south, not east or west. However, as soon as you step away, you van turn to your left or right to be "facing" east or west. I'll bet that Muslims working near the north pole use the same or similar app as astro-Muslims to find the direction to "face" Mecca when saying orayers.

I dont believe you can even stand (or kneel on a rug) at the actual north pole because now there is a pole there. Like a pole stuck in the ice to mark the location of the north pole. Of course the MAGNETIC north pole is in a different spot. But i think that pole is marked by a pole also...

@Scraps yah, Space Ponch, one of many projects of Yuichi Kishino. When you live in Tokyo and sorta pay attention to those subculture scenes you see his name all the time, and yet it's never become too clear what exactly he is/does, haha. I never knew what exactly that Keihin Kyodai was.

If Santa is cutting labor costs like everyone else, I am sure he’s dealing with tons of different ethnic groups working in that workshop and hopefully has proper accommodations.

Santa's place was never supposed to be right on the geographic north pole, though? Isn't it in Christmastown, nearby? Or am I overly reliant on the Rudolf The Red Nosed Reindeer canon?
