So, Coel. I was into "customizing" too. But my favorite tool was an electric wood burning iron that I would make three headed army men with arms coming out of there ass.

<it's beautiful. what is it?
...i'd say it's the visual manifestation of this music if all those 90º turns were augmented each with loops, as in 1/3 roadway cloverleafs.

my older brother had a woodburning kit; and he had army toys, like gi joes and little army men, cavalry men, etc....and he was fascinated by perverting the human body. (he built an elaborate cross out of hardwood, complete with a metal plate into which he inscribed "inri", just so he could nail a gi joe to it and then soak it in lighter fluid and burn it; and he drew grotesque versions of people...)
but i never saw him use his woodburning tool for such things.

One time this friend of my sister tried to guilt trip here into making clothes for dolls to give to poor children. Well, the dolls just sat out in garage ignored until one day we decided that they needed more fashionable hair cuts. A particular favorite that we came up with was The Challenger named after a local surf band. Not satisfied, we decided to give them a tan with a blowtorch then hang them from the garage rafters. When my dad finally notice them, he just sighed and shook his head. But there they stayed for about a year.

was the burning gi joe one of the talking ones with hair or the original with plastic hair?

Hello Rich!

Also, I knew a complete psycho as a kid who liked “Kiss” (the band) and would burn toys and throw them out the window of the building he lived in.
Avatar 12:26am

Kurt on WFMU loves KISS too but he doesn't burn toys - as far as I know :)

Hi Rich! Hi everyone!

JakeGould:

Oh, lots of WFMU folks like “Kiss” and are not psychos. Fine with that!
  12:29am
chresti:

Did he have kiss dolls?
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 12:30am
coelacanth∅:

rich, the original ones. he had several. and tanks and a space capsule...i had one, which i got because my older brother had them. i didn't give a shit about gi joes or guns and shit.
he had some peculiar fascinations - many of which involved fire.
  12:30am
JakeGould:

He was pretty much a bully and shoplifter, so he’d burn what he stole.

chresti if you're asking me, kiss didn't exist yet; but i'm sure he would not have.
Avatar 12:33am
Billy Jam:

@JakeGould - and which facility is he incarcerated in nowadays?
  12:36am
JakeGould:

@BillyJam: I genuinely wonder—and hope—about that sometimes. FWIW, he lived across the street from me in—wait for it—“Trump Village” so there you go.

Had another friend of a friend who was a pyromaniac but with a purpose. One day in the 1980s at the local pizza place they put up a “Duran Duran” poster. While we’re sitting there he’s constantly wincing his face and saying, “What is this shit?” Plays around with the edge of the poster. We all leave… He tells us to wait up… And he basically pulled the poster little bit off the wall, set it on fire and ran out.

Found out later he enlisted in the Navy as a demolitions expert.

Yes, I liked fire too, I'd burn any thing I could get my hands on. I grew out of that, thankfully. long ago,I read that Tom Verlaine and Richard Hell ran away from home and started a field on fire somewhere in Alabama. About ten years ago, Chresti and I went to hear Richard read somewhere in Venice. After, we were getting a book signed and I said to Richard " I too started a field on fire" He paused for about five seconds then started cracking up. He asked me if I was bored too. i mumbled something about not getting to go to the beach, and the moment passed. He was a punk hero to me. I was quite pleased with my self.
  12:47am
JakeGould:

@BillyJam: Without getting too into a Wikipedia-length explanation, I grew up smack across the street from “Trump Village” and this is the interesting thing that I’ll share for us living under a Trump administration.

The neighborhood that used to exist before it was leveled to make way for “Trump Village” was a neighborhood that was informally known as “The Gut.” It was basically the area between Coney Island and Brighton Beach when that area was known as a resort. All of the workers that worked in either area tended to live in “The Gut” and it was predominately filled with immigrants, blacks, hispanics and others.

The Trump family promised to “clean up” the neighborhood by tearing down that area to build their crappy middle class projects. Ironic in the great scheme of things, right?

Jeese, my childhood pyromania was boring, blowing up GI Joes w/ fire crackers, pouring gallons of gas down a sewage drain to watch roaches and rats melt to the wall of the 10m chasm in Japan, ( 15m fire above ground level as well) and making pipe bombs to blow up trees. I got over it by the time I was in HS.

It's ironic how little I find willful destruction by fire amusing now, Especially now that California is going up in flames. I think my own gasping for air is punishment for my feckless youth.
  1:07am
JakeGould:

As a kid, my only pyromaniac tendencies involved using a magnifying glass to burn things and helping a neighborhood friend collect dud fireworks around this time of year to scrape out the gunpowder and make his own home-made M-80s. I mean we were 10 years old and nobody would let us buy an M-80, so what else could we do?

my brother never would've set someone else's anything on fire, but he was so fascinated by it that he'd spend days, weeks or in one case months building something to scale as realistically as he could (and he could) so he could watch it burn.
little ho scale wooden houses with furniture and staircases, mostly. all burned.
he constructed model ships from kits. one was the uss constitution. it had something like 5000 pieces - hundreds of cannons, personnel, etc. the masts were cloth and the rope was thread. about 1.5' long. when he finished it he filled the hull with lighter fluid (i think) and explosives, lit it and sent it out on the river. amazing!

Jake, Just this afternoon I drove by a house where we would go to buy illegal fireworks when i was a kid. They would take you into a back bedroom that had suitcases full of explosives in the closet. Man, they had everything! They would make a run down to Mexico about once a week to restock.

One time, a friend and I drove down to Ensenada. We were walking around one night, and we went into this store that had a big display case full of fireworks, even quarter sticks of dynamite! The shop keeper was totally drunk and tried to sell us all kinds of shit, but his only advise was if we wanted dynamite we shouldn't light it in town, we should take it to the beach.
