A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Loretta Lynn carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 8/2/18 9:20am Itzall Ablurr:

Dear βrian, is that a joke or a real suggestion? I don't think I'm even ingesting any buckwheat...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 8/2/18 9:21am Webhamster Henry:

@trouble : I'm referring to a newer project; I saw Rothenberg last year at the Subterranean Poetry Festival (come on up this year, Modern Worlders).
From his website:
"Rothenberg is currently writing a book and making a film about playing music with nightingales. One excerpt appears here. The book should arrive in 2018, from the University of Chicago Press."
So: Book promo opportunity!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 8/2/18 9:21am melinda:

@Brian buckwheat is yang? I eat it daily.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 8/2/18 9:22am Itzall Ablurr:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 8/2/18 9:25am βrian:

Very yang, from what I'm told, and hearsay is good enough for me. If you need to kick ass, start your day with buckwheat groats.

Wow, Trouble. That place looks amazing. EVERYTHING. I especially like the line on their site that says "Modern dishes that capture the flavors of the season • until 7:30pm". I assume after 7:30, the flavors of the season are allowed to roam free in the streets?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 8/2/18 9:49am ɨkɛ:

I realize now that's pretty out of context and seems quite militant when taken by itself, but if you'd seen the literally thousands of previous comments on previous playlists that inspired it, it would make much more sense, I *swear* it. Sorry, I'll try to make comments that make more sense in the here and now, and leave it to the DJs to be militant.

I was with someone yesterday who was stung on the nose by a maybe-wasp. The pain, moments later, was reported to extend from forehead to teeth.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 8/2/18 9:53am βrian:

I got stung on a tonsil once. (Biking with mouth open.) I thought I was going to pass out.
  Thu. 8/2/18 9:55am still b/p:

Stung on a tonsil....yowwww damn. The only -- ONLY -- good thing sbout that is you have a sure winner when "got stung" stories are swapped.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 8/2/18 9:57am Itzall Ablurr:

still b/p, agreed, that's definitely a high-water mark for sting anecdotes but it COULD be topped, nod nod, wink wink...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 8/2/18 9:59am mb:

I got stung by a wasp on the areola once. Was bent over in pain. Took the air right out of me. Top 10 most painful moment.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 8/2/18 10:01am Wild Neil||Peace All:

When I was 3 or 4 I was stung on the upper lip by a hornet or yellow jacket. A couple days later, I sneezed out a dead insect. I cannot believe it unless I was there!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 8/2/18 10:03am melinda:

Neil I got stung on my lip as a kid too, didn't inhale it though. Freaky.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 8/2/18 10:04am Wild Neil||Peace All:

I also had poison ivy over 90% of my body once when I was 12. Eyelids, lips, EVERYWHERE. Yes, even THERE. New skin eventually grew where the rash WAS. The human body is amazing.
@Melinda-did it go up my nose or into my mouth and through my sinuses?!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 8/2/18 10:05am Wild Neil||Peace All:

Yeah, "tonsils" wins, though!
  Thu. 8/2/18 10:06am still b/p:

Took an earwig pinch or two well inside the underwear lines when I was a kid. Let's call it a "rhymes-with-anecdotal" attack. But wasps targeting the most personal and sensitive zones...that is turning the shudderworthiness up to 11.

Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 8/2/18 10:38am crateslinger:

Polluting is bad, but if you're going to do it, the funnest way is to throw beer bottles into a lake, and shoot them with a bb gun so they break up and sink. Harder than it sounds, especially when you're 13 and drunk.

Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 8/2/18 10:46am melinda:

@Jake not really, my neighborhood doesn't have too many cats. To make up for that I follow a facebook page for the street cats of Istanbul. Have you seen the film Kedi? It's all about them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 8/2/18 10:48am Itzall Ablurr:

*Kedi*
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 8/2/18 10:48am JakeGould:

@melinda: Heard about “Kedi” but haven’t seen it yet. My neighborhood is lousy with cats so I’m not that motivated to see a full-length film about them. But yeah, street cats are cool.

Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 8/2/18 11:12am Itzall Ablurr:

My billions have certainly afforded me a few benefits along life's highway.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 8/2/18 11:13am Mick:

@Webhamster - thanks! Looks fantastic! I'm going to see if I can make it up there and bring a friend from New Paltz while I'm at it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 8/2/18 11:13am northguineahills:

As much education I got in college, I still have a network of friends I still hang out w/ to this day. Unfortunately, all but one of them are not in my industry..
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 8/2/18 11:13am Itzall Ablurr:

I mean- check out my radio/heart icon combo, it's pretty obvious who's paying the freight around here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 8/2/18 11:13am fred:

@Itzall Ablurr: exactly! so why take on debt that will make you an indentured servant?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 8/2/18 11:14am Lixiviated Life:

We have excellent State Schools in NY & NJ.
Save yourself the debt and apply in-state.
See Malcolm Gladwell'ls podcast Revisionist History from Season I Episodes 5 & 6.
Don't let anyone "school shame" you.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 8/2/18 11:14am Trouble:

indeed @ geegee vindaloo. my classes at RISD were filled with people from all over the world, and a variety of interests: that was sooo exciting to me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 8/2/18 11:14am Itzall Ablurr:

That's an excellent position, and I agree, WHY?!? Otherwise could I afford to spend upwards of $10 EVERY month for this station? I think not.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 8/2/18 11:15am JakeGould:

College admissions is one thing. The requirement of a college degree for seemingly every job out there is another. I’m of the mind that most jobs that “require” a college degree are actually not anything close to needing a college degree. Another sign of the erosion of the middle class. I think there is utterly nothing wrong with simply getting a high school diploma and maybe 2 years and calling it a day. But society (at least in the U.S.) doesn’t agree with that.

Trouble, I had to miss a chunk of today's show, but what I've been able to hear has been fab, as always. Thanks for the musics and the insights!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 8/2/18 11:18am fred:

@Itzall Ablurr: Woah, you mean you now have dollars *plural* left over monthly? Living the high live!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 8/2/18 11:18am Webhamster Henry:

Spiegel may be working on a live version of this!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 8/2/18 11:19am Passaic River Blues:

Absolutely cannot get enough of this Spiegel.

There is now a shortage in the skilled trades as high school guidance counselors are actively pushing the "you must go get a 4 year degree in order to have a successful career". *poof* where did all the qualified diesel mechanics go?!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 8/2/18 11:20am ranjit:

Patchwork has been one of my favorite tracks for a zillion years and I never knew there was an alternate version! And maybe a live version too? Whee!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 8/2/18 11:21am Webhamster Henry:

She just had one of her acoustic works played at the BBC Proms (along with Daphne Oram and Suzanne Ciani pieces).

Laurie Spiegel has a kind of Fripp/Tangerine Dream thing going on.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 8/2/18 11:21am northguineahills:

Laurie Spiegel!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 8/2/18 11:21am Webhamster Henry:

@Ranjit maybe you can play it on your "8 bit violin"?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 8/2/18 11:22am Lixiviated Life:

Agree w/ @Wild Neil
Trades should be an alternative.
That was sort of Hank Rowan's vision, but not exactly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 8/2/18 11:22am northguineahills:

I still owe almost $100k in student loans from grad school 15 years ago. of course, a lot of that was from having a major bike accident when I had no health insurance at the time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 8/2/18 11:22am Trouble:

thanks for the good vibes @mick!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 8/2/18 11:22am Itzall Ablurr:

Yes, fred, I do indeed have at least a few dollars every month, thanks to my cunning investments (ask me about buckwheat futures), hard work ethic and a complete disdain for vacations and "supersizing" any of my lunch choices. Not to brag...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 8/2/18 11:23am ranjit:

@Henry I wish! I'm barely at the "mary had a little lamb" level.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 8/2/18 11:24am ranjit:

now, maybe an acapella choral version of Patchwork...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 8/2/18 11:26am βrian:

Student insurance cost me $500/year when I was in college in the 90s. That covered two surgeries, so it saved my ass.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 8/2/18 11:26am Trouble:

sorry to hear that @ NGH. i advise my students to stay as clear as possible from debt. community college for 2 years then apply to a money school if you need to. state schools are obviously cheaper and are seeing a huge uptick of smart students who can't afford private school tuition.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 8/2/18 11:27am geegee vindaloo:

@trouble; It's still a great place but we need to push harder to bring students and faculty of color into the school, these voices have been missed in my department ( we're working on it )

@Itzall Ablurr: "Vacations?" Dreadful thing. I'd rather get paid, but my employer won't, so I take the boring time off. I don't work for free, that's not negotiable. I won't waste money on an actual vacation either, WFMU needs that dough
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 8/2/18 11:33am northguineahills:

@Trouble: It was mostly the medical bills. I did my undergrad on scholarship. Grad school in NYC is expensive, I must say, even living in the ghetto...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 8/2/18 11:35am JakeGould:

@ItzallAblurr: As someone who has had—at times in my life—become a workaholic to simply survive, don’t romanticize, “hard work ethic” that much. Few of the people who are millionaires and billionaires out there got that fortune from “hard work.” The sad reality of American life (and in other places) is the “Protestant work ethic” is utter bunk.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 8/2/18 11:35am northguineahills:

Covering Sun Ra is a win-win!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 8/2/18 11:40am Itzall Ablurr:

Dear JakeGould, I'm so very sorry that chatting here does not feature a "sarcasm" emogee (sp?), but trust me when I tell you that I was kidding. You see, my icon is of a character very clueless, pompous and wealthy- it's a joke, seriously. I do not "aspire" to be that person in real life!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 8/2/18 11:40am fred:

At least when it comes to software, the school you attended is BS. It only matters if you're going to be a "leader", in which case you're already loaded so it never mattered. Community college is the way to go. Nobody cares about your college after a year or so
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 8/2/18 11:41am Itzall Ablurr:

Also, the Sun Ra tune was awesome!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 8/2/18 11:49am Wild Neil||Peace All:

@Fred-my mom always said, "Son you are going to college to work for a man who never went there who runs a business.". My boss DID attend college, BUT he worked in the trades doing sheetrock for 30 years and did test lab work for about 25.

Cooper Union used to be free! But they DO offer some Financial Aid to many! I used to go there, but dropped out like a dummy.

Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 8/2/18 11:57am Wild Neil||Peace All:

@Fred-it is an elite Ivy-league level education for free. It was. Engineering, Art and Architecture. In a few years it should be free again. Why do they charge tuition? The board of directors built a multi-million dollar new building in Manhattant that they could not afford.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 8/2/18 11:58am Wild Neil||Peace All:

They had a 10% admittance rate with LOTS of applicants.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 8/2/18 11:59am Wild Neil||Peace All:

Maybe lower?
