Chalaw Basiwali with Anu Kaliting Sadiponga:
Basiwali: Taiwanese Indigenous Roots Music

Hear this show now: Pop-up listen Pop-up player! | Add or read comments

Chalaw Basiwali (formerly known as Chalaw Garu - photo above) and Anu Kaliting Sadiponga (photo below), talented singer / songwriters from Taiwan, are both are members of the Amis ethnic minority. They are among a growing number of indigneous artists from Taiwan creating original music inspired by their roots.

They also explore broader cultural connections in Chalaw's group Basiwali, which also features Kilema, who's from Madagascar. (Taiwanese indigenous people and people from Madagascar are both part of the broader Austronesian cultural family.)

A duo version of Basiwali featuring Chalaw with Anu Kaliting Sadipongan is in town to perform Friday night August 17th at Flushing Town Hall and Sunday night August 19th at Joe's Pub - with special guests accompanying them at the live shows. And in between the duo joins us live on WFMU!

I know a different version of that song.
Avatar 6:23pm Fredericks:

Mais Ou Sont Passees Les Gazelles, "that song."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:38pm Rob W:

Yes good catch Fredericks - there were a bunch of songs with the same basic music and different titles / lyrics - the original was actually Kazete No.2 by Obed Ngobeni from South Africa on his album "My Wife Bought a Taxi" - at least I think that was the original - but the Mahotella Queens also did a version.
Avatar 6:40pm Fredericks:

Rob, you are great it was the Queens.

Explains why searching the title was so frustrating.
