Miles Davis

A 5-hour special edition on Influencers, Rule Breakers, & Paradigm Shifters
from Eno to Ornette and from Aretha to The Velvets.
Did Miles really dig Stockhausen?
Did Ginsberg write a Broadway show tune?
Listen to the color of your dreams…

Artist Track Album Label Year Comments
The Beatles  Tomorrow Never Knows   Favoriting Revolver  Capitol Records  1966  Aside from a number of harmonic, lyrical, and production firsts for a pop song, the piece uses audio tape loops credited to Paul McCartney's admiration for Stockhausen's Gesang der Jünglinge and musique concrète. After experimentation on their own, the band members supplied loops to producer George Martin, who selected 16. The composition and recording of this song predates all the other “psychedelic” and “experimental” effects on Revolver, Sgt. Pepper and subsequent albums.
Malawi Mouse Boys  Kulira Kwambewa (The Crying of the Mouse)   Favoriting Forever is 4 U  Omnivore Records  2016  Ridgewood Radio Theme https://lovesupportunite.org

Music behind DJ:
David W

Deeper loop   Favoriting

Ridgewood Noise Library

Beautiful Drummer

Loopy bed.
Herbie Hancock  Chameleon   Favoriting Head Hunters  Columbia Records  1973  A defining moment of the jazz-fusion movement, the album made jazz listeners out of rhythm and blues fans, and vice versa. Hancock, electric piano, synths, clavinet; Bennie Maupin, reeds; Paul Jackson, guitar and bass; Harvey Mason, drums; Bill Summers, percussion.
Mike Oldfield  Tubular Bells Part 1   Favoriting Tubular Bells  Virgin  1973  Debut album by English musician Oldfield, recorded when he was 19 and played the majority of the instruments. The album gained global attention when it was used on the soundtrack to the horror film The Exorcist.
Pink Floyd  Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun   Favoriting Pink Floyd: Live at Pompeii  Universal Pictures  1972  From the 1972 concert documentary film directed by Adrian Maben. Original release on the album A Saucerful of Secrets in 1968.

Ennio Morricone  The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly   Favoriting The Good, the Bad and the Ugly: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack  EMI America/Capitol  1966  The impact of this piece and movie score to the film directed by Sergio Leone cannot be underestimated for its popular and soundtrack influence.
Richard Harris  MacArthur Park   Favoriting A Tramp Shining  Dunhill Records  1968  In 1967 the producer Bones Howe asked composer Jimmy Webb to create a pop song with classical elements, different movements, and changing time signatures. Howe did not care for the ambitious arrangement or unorthodox lyrics and the song was rejected by the group The Association, for whom it was originally intended.
Iron Butterfly  In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida   Favoriting In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida  Atco  1968  According to drummer Ron Bushy, organist/vocalist Doug Ingle wrote the song one evening while drinking an entire gallon of Red Mountain wine and who was slurring his words so badly that what was supposed to be "in the Garden of Eden" was interpreted by transcriber Bushy as "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida".
Can  Aumgn   Favoriting Tago Mago  United Artists  1971  Recorded by Holger Czukay in a castle near Cologne. This was the first of Can's albums to be made both from organized sessions and "in-between-recordings", where Czukay secretly recorded the musicians jamming and would edit these long, disorganized tracks into structured songs.
Steve Reich  Music for Mallets, Voices, & Organ   Favoriting Steve Reich ‎– Drumming / Music For Mallet Instruments, Voices And Organ / Six Pianos  Deutsche Grammophon   1974  The piece is scored for glockenspiels, marimbas, metallophone (vibraphone without resonators), voices, and organ. The "character" of this piece has percolated through our musical culture like few others. And its generative concept of phasing, spawned from Reich's early tape compositions, is a trick of the ear and the mind that seamlessly fuses confusion and delight.

Janis Joplin  Mercedes Benz   Favoriting Pearl  Columbia Records  1971  Joplin’s final recording session, which took place on October 1, 1970, yielded this a cappella piece. It was the last song she recorded before her death days later.
The Velvet Underground & Nico  All Tomorrow’s Parties   Favoriting The Velvet Underground & Nico  Verve  1966  The piece features a piano motif played by John Cale, inspired by the style of his friend Terry Riley, with whom Cale had played in La Monte Young's group. It was one of the first pop songs to make use of prepared piano.
Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band  Pachuco Cadaver   Favoriting Trout Mask Replica  Straight  1970  Crammed into a small house to record, surrounded by drama including physical and emotional abuse, drugs, and tricky lo-tech techniques with Frank Zappa on the edges, this masterwork somehow got made.
Hair  3500   Favoriting Hair: Original Soundtrack Recording  RCA    This tune from the Broadway musical by Rado, Ragni, and McDermot derives lyrics from Allen Ginsberg's Wichita Vortex Sutra, and refer to Vietcong killed and captured statistics. The racial slang and slur quotes Ginsberg's reference to the parallel suffering of the under-represented in the USA.
Jimi Hendrix  Machine Gun   Favoriting Band of Gypsys  Capitol Records  1970  Recorded live at the Fillmore East, with Billy Cox, bass and Buddy Miles, drums.
The Temptations  Papa Was A Rolling Stone   Favoriting All Directions  Gordy  1972  Written by songwriters Norman Whitfield and Barrett Strong as a single for Motown act The Undisputed Truth in 1971, Whitfield remade it as a 12-minute record for The Temptations with an extended instrumental introduction and verses separated by extended musical passages. Unprecedented.
Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five  The Message   Favoriting The Message  Sugar Hill Records  1982  The first prominent hip hop song to provide a social commentary rather than self-congratulatory boasting or party chants. Featuring alternating lead vocals by Melle Mel and Ed "Duke Bootee" Fletcher.

Ornette Coleman  Free Jazz   Favoriting Free Jazz: A Collective Improvisation  Atlantic Records  1961  Two "independent" quartets. Left channel: Ornette Coleman – alto saxophone, Don Cherry – pocket trumpet, Scott LaFaro – bass, Billy Higgins – drums. Right channel: Eric Dolphy – bass clarinet, Freddie Hubbard – trumpet, Charlie Haden – bass, Ed Blackwell – drums.
Aretha Franklin  Skylark   Favoriting Laughing on the Outside  Columbia Records  1963  The 21-year-old Aretha imprints this Johnny Mercer, Hoagy Carmichael tune on recorded immortality.
Gavin Bryars  The Sinking of the Titanic (Section 9, Woodblocks)   Favoriting The Sinking of the Titanic  EG Records  1982  Bryars' inspiration for the work came from a report that the wireless operator Harold Bride on the Titanic had witnessed the house band continue to perform as the ship sank. Bryars connects us to Brian Eno, The Scratch Orchestra, Portsmouth Sinfonia, Michael Nyman, Kate St. John, and Steve Beresford.
Laurie Anderson  O Superman   Favoriting Big Science  Warner Bros.  1981  Anderson drew from the aria O Sovereign, O Judge, O Father from Jules Massenet's 1885 opera Le Cid but also references the 1979 Iran hostage crisis, Tao Te Ching, voice mail technology, and the Virgin Mary. It is also an unclassifiable minimalist musical gem.
Brian Eno & David Byrne  Help Me Somebody   Favoriting My Life in the Bush of Ghosts  Sire/Warner Bros.  1981  On this album a key innovation is using vocals sampled from other sources, such as recordings of Arabic singers, disc jockeys, and an exorcist. Eno has cited Holger Czukay's (of Can) experiments with dictaphones and short-wave radios as a precursor.
Frank Zappa & The Mothers Of Invention  Our Bizarre Relationship/Uncle Meat Variations   Favoriting Uncle Meat  Bizarre Records/Reprise Records  1969  "The words to the songs on this album were scientifically prepared from a random series of syllables, dreams, neuroses & private jokes that nobody except members of the band ever laugh at, and other irrelevant material. They are all 'very serious' & loaded with secret underground candy-rock psychedelic profundities. (Basically, this is an instrumental album.)" - Zappa
Pauline Oliveros  Beautiful Soop (excerpt)   Favoriting Alien Bog / Beautiful Soop  Pogus Productions  1997  In 1966, utilizing the original Buchla Box 100 series created for the San Francisco Tape Music Center by Donald Buchla and her custom tape delay system, Oliveros ran the take up reel on one machine and the playback reel on another. Through patching the playback signals were re-routed back to the recording head in a variety of configurations. Plus frogs and poetry. Got that?
Miles Davis  On the Corner / New York Girl / Thinkin' of One Thing and Doin' Another / Vote for Miles   Favoriting On The Corner  Columbia Records  1972  Davis described the album with the formula "Stockhausen plus funk plus Ornette Coleman.” Miles and his producer, Teo Macero, employ cut-and-splice tape editing procedures to combine various takes, to overdub, and add effects. Dave Liebman – saxes, Bennie Maupin – bass clarinet, Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock – keyboards, John McLaughlin – guitar, Collin Walcott – electric sitar, Michael Henderson – bass guitar, Don Alias – drums, percussion, Jack DeJohnette, Billy Hart – drums, and many others.
Karlheinz Stockhausen  Hymnen Region III (excerpt)   Favoriting Karlheinz Stockhausen ‎– Hymnen  Deutsche Grammophon  1969  The piece in all its formulations is a massive tape soundscape using samples of 40 national anthems, various field recordings of public events, a few dialogue "inserts", shortwave radio noise and synthesized sound to create a kind of "portrait of humanity" as it melts together, bursts apart, and then is reborn as a new utopian entity.

okay i had to go back to my main source because i'm doubting my memory, and (and i'm not assuming anyone cares but in case someone does) it was Miles, who's idea it was to collaborate with Jimi, who made it not happen, by being a greedy egomaniac. after all the arrangements were settled and within a 1/2 hour of the recording session, Davis demanded $50,000. up front to enter the studio. (after it was decided no one gets money up front and everyone (4 people) gets treated equally.

Well, that escalator will undergo a renovation that should last months. They're actually building a big outside elevator to replace it these days

ok, back from a meeting in time for Laurie! (Found a Laurie 7LP Box Set for next to nothing about her Big Science tour, mostly Live, but other material as well)

I was influenced by My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts when I putting some music under more or less a cappella field recordings.

I loved the grooves nearly smooth on this album.

@still b/p: If you do, be sure to get one of the earliest editions, as it has a track that was deleted from all subsequent reissues, and then get the last reissue (I think), because it's got some great songs which didn't make the cut the first time around.
I love that album. I think I've had it on every format it came out on over the years.

Aw, I used to have Alice's Adventures Underground and Through the Looking Glass with Jane Asher as Alice, on Caedmon. One of my favorites too.

Funny, David Dichelle played Hymnen yesterday (which got me thinking of Miles)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:30pm

Yes, Hymnen is next and that ties all things together for today. And maybe forever!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:32pm

nice! i was hoping to hear hymnen in the near future, since i don't think i ever have.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:34pm

i don't have a favorite Miles album.
this, aghartha (sp?); pangea (sp?); bitches brew, of course...and forever love some tracks on kind of blue, though i don't like the whole album uniformly.

Stupid story I told yesterday: a former coworker did his PhD in Berlin, and brought back from his defense buffet a sandwich wrapper with the logo of the maybe caterer (my knowledge of German does not exist). He cut it off and taped it to the office wall, under a poster for Hymnen. The logo appears on that site: www.stockhausen-spezialitaeten.de

@webhamster Henry and ngh: That former coworker has made a pretty cool software called Factorsynth: www.jjburred.com...

Fred, ha! :D

Coel, I love early miles, late Miles, and admire the way he continued to push and grow. Gotta defer to everyone here when it comes to musical knowledge though. Just a listener!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:51pm
david w:

Miles got seduced by tape manipulation but, to be fair, Hymnen has a lot more to it than this 23 minutes including orchestral parts that might crash a Humvee.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:54pm
fred:

David, I hear often that crashing gets even more a part of electronic contemporary music the more software is involved (looking at you, Max)

@fred That looks interesting!
I am working on a tuning app that shows how your sound correlates with itself on a big screen that has scales built in from the Scala collection. You can also build scales out of pitch detection on your own home made instruments.

That descending tone throughout heard in Francis Dhomont's Frankenstein Symphony, which samples hundreds of Musique Concrete and electronic classic pieces (hence the title).
