I play music that is old and that is new. Some of it is digital while some is analog. It is from many different countries; sometimes it is loud and at other times it is quiet.

Good afternoon Mayuko and listeners. I hope you'll give some insight into what's going on in that video

So freaking surreal to hear this ondo track on wfmu. I had to listen to this hundreds of times as a child at school and summer festival.

@fred it's a video of bon dance festival, it takes place in August. The souls of ancestors come back to this world in the Bon season and we have dance parties to welcome em, supposedly. These are music for such festivals.

That stage in the middle is where the music comes from and people circle around it dancing. I kinda think it might be nice to have a dance club with that structure, having a DJ in the center.

This Teppo's track is Kawachi ondo - which started its tradition as kind of requiem for the dead people.

@rw Yes! Anyone can dance to the bon dance, literally! Or more accurately, it doesn't matter if you dance it wrong, as long as you are moving somehow. haha!

You get yelled at by racists? What's wrong with people?

@Mayuko: it's a link to the insane ads Lee Scratch Perry did for Guinness years ago. Billy Jam has good information about that city
More importantly: who is yelling at you? There's something wrong with them, not you
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:40pm

"it doesn't matter if you dance it wrong, as long as you are moving somehow". I think that's a dance that matches my dance skills, which boil down to "moving somehow"

@Mayuko: Your comment about Dublin reminded me of a (I think) Korean artist who worked with video and paper. One vid had her in a London park in a dress made of phone book pages, in another she dragged a paper horse through Dublin and kids kicked and eventually ruined the horse. I can't remember her name, does that ring a bell?

Avatar 1:25pm

@fred re Niagara Ondo, I think there's similarity in Japanese main island folk music and Okinawa one, in general. But Ryuichi Sakamoto is playing keyboard in that track, so possibly that could have been intentional?

Avatar 1:40pm

@fred I think me too. I think I read somewhere that Haruomi Hosono was there at the recording of that song as well and that's where he got one of the inspirations for the concept of Yellow Magic Orchestra.
Avatar 1:43pm
Mayuko:

Hey Jake! I had a question that I meant to ask you! When you saw those raccoons stealing food from stray cats under the military truck, was it on 4th ave near the cemetery by chance??
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:43pm
fred:

And of course Haruomi Hosono played in Paradise View, with that fun anachronistic scene with YMO when the story is supposed to take place years before they got together
  1:44pm
rw:

It got heavier as it went along. Always good. I feel like a broken record saying thanks over and over to you and everyone at the station but thanks as always! I'm constantly struck by the quality and energy and commitment and knowledge here.
  1:44pm
JakeGould:

The most interesting thing I have seen about racism in Brooklyn growing up here, moving away and then living in different neighborhoods is how the branding of “Brooklyn” has warped the world.

If you are in “Brownstone Brooklyn” neighborhoods like Park Slope, you will see tons of white people lecturing other white people on what racism is based on utterly nothing. But the second you get into other neighborhoods, real racism happens. And it all stinks: Old prejudices still exist and then in—frankly—safer neighborhoods racism is debated in a way that makes it sound like some live action role playing game.

Which is all to say I once went into a Vietnamese sandwich shop in Park Slope and this woman started speaking in Vietnamese to the staff. They responded in English “I have no idea what you are talking about…” and then she awkwardly was informed the staff was all Chinese and she looked at me as if she landed in a “Twilight Zone” episode.

PS: And yes those raccoons were spotted in that lot near 38th Street and 5th Avenue in Sunset Park.
