Avatar 6:09pm
mce1965:

Or if Don Arden hasn't kicked them in
Avatar 6:10pm
cometothesunshine:

Arden is given little credit for producing some of their earlier records - I think it is unique that from 1966-1968 they were basically allowed to produce themselves.
  6:11pm
uptownjen:

Looking forward to that! This show is perfect for today.

I don't have Ogden's in mono - gotta rectify that.....
Avatar 6:16pm
cometothesunshine:

Well, they seemingly lost the tape - so even the CDs are from vinyl. My vinyl is mint, but plays a little crackly (as you can hear)
  Swag For Life Member 6:17pm
DennisK:

Was there a stock mono issue, Andrew, or DJ only?
  Swag For Life Member 6:17pm
DennisK:

This is a great mix
Avatar 6:17pm
cometothesunshine:

Certainly stock in the UK - but no issue in the US. Not sure if any other countries issued the true mono mix.
  6:18pm

I believe this song (Afterglow) was on the same list of Andy Partridge's fave songs that had "I Can't Let Maggie Go". Wow, those harmonies! Never heard this mix.

  Swag For Life Member 6:21pm

The Desper mix, anyway
  6:21pm
sittingnexttobrian:

Request: "Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow". Which (to me at least) sounds much more like 21st Century neo-psych (like Tame Impala or something) than anything happening in '66.

I have only a few 45’s of theirs and a cd of greatest hits, so so much of this is new to me. Sounding great!
  Swag For Life Member 6:33pm
DennisK:

Aw, Tim - you gotta cop Ogden's Nut Gone Flake! One of the greatest LPs ever.
Avatar 6:36pm
cometothesunshine:

Yes, I was surprised going back over it this past week how strong it is.
  6:36pm
Tim from LH:

Dennis, you reminded me, I do have that one. A cheap reissue, forget the label.
Avatar 6:38pm
cometothesunshine:

This was a 45 only repro of an acetate.
  6:42pm
sittingnexttobrian:

Was that your own Ogdens/Intruder edit?
Avatar 6:42pm
cometothesunshine:

Yes, I did some unique edits for this show.
Avatar 6:43pm
cometothesunshine:

Kenney Jones!
  6:43pm

Exactly! I was going to say that edit deprived me of a classic KJ fill, but there are plenty more to go around.

P.P. Arnold has my favorite female voice of that era

I remember when you posted that picture of her with you, Andrew. I would so love to see her live.

I saw her and she was great - I have an amazing story about her that I will tell you next time we meet up.
Avatar 6:47pm
cometothesunshine:

This one of my favorite records of the 1960's - Would You Believe
  6:47pm
uptownjen:

(She still has a great voice, from what I have heard in the recent videos I’ve seen of her performing.)
Avatar 6:50pm
cometothesunshine:

This is a neat mix of Lazy Sunday they did for the BBC - they turned all the weird overdubs way up
  6:51pm
uptownjen:

That ‘The Turning Tide’ album that FINALLY came out last year was one of my favorite records I’ve heard in recent years. (I wish it had gotten wider release, though. I told so many people about it, but they couldn’t get a copy as it was already sold out.)
  6:52pm
uptownjen:

Great mix of “Lazy Sunday”! It’s popping out of my speakers!
  6:52pm
sittingnexttobrian:

This mix is so cool! Hey, I've never listened to any of the '77 reunion stuff. Anything worthwhile?
Avatar 6:53pm

I never felt the '77 reunion stuff was all that great - but it could be worth a second listen.

I actually remember the first Small Faces album I bought some 30 years ago (after raves from Paul Weller). It was on NEMS and I did not know what to make of The Universal. It took me a few years to totally love.
Avatar 7:07pm
mce1965:

You weren't hooked after hearing their cover of Get Yourself Together on the Snap! 45?
  Swag For Life Member 7:07pm
DennisK:

My older brother had There Are But Four, but it was Ogden's that blew my mind back in '68
  Swag For Life Member 7:08pm

Might have been '69 by the time it reached my ears
Avatar 7:09pm

A few years later The Autumn Stone sealed the deal
Avatar 7:09pm
mce1965:

Me too! That's why I asked
Avatar 7:10pm
mce1965:

That's what made me dig deeper than Itchycoo Park and Lazy Sunday on the Sire History of British Rock LPs, which were the only tracks I had up to that point
  Swag For Life Member 7:10pm
DennisK:

Gotta slide outta here - will pick up the end on the podcast. GREAT show, Andrew - many thanks!
Avatar 7:10pm
cometothesunshine:

The Autumn Stone is/was a bit of a mixed bag. Never understood the live part!
  7:10pm
sittingnexttobrian:

I first knew "Get Yourself Together" via the Jam version. Sings it in a lower octave if I remember correctly, so the Small Faces version was jarring at first.
Avatar 7:11pm
cometothesunshine:

Thanks, DK!
Avatar 7:11pm

I prefer the Small Faces version - but, boy I loved that Snap! EP.

The Great Depression is one of my favorite songs.
Avatar 7:13pm
mce1965:

Avatar 7:14pm

Well, thanks to you I now own the pic sleeve after 35 years... life felt a little more complete!

It really blew my mind to see Weller on the cover of the new Mojo (ha). Is he part-owner?
Avatar 7:15pm
mce1965:

Yeah, the Modgreatgrandfather
Avatar 7:16pm
cometothesunshine:

Yeah - I saw some crazy things I never saw again on my trips in the 1984 & 85. Sadly, I did not have as much money to buy stuff. Although, there were records everywhere: Boots, WH Smith - you name it!
Avatar 7:16pm
mce1965:

Yes, those were golden days... I felt your pain then too.
  7:16pm
sittingnexttobrian:

(he seems to be on every fifth cover)
Avatar 7:17pm
mce1965:

That's because he releases a new bad album every other month

Of course, the new album promises the return of pastoral wonder

“All Or Nothing” takes me back to my teen years and reminds me of how much Rhino’s British Invasion 9-disc series rocked my world.

Avatar 7:24pm
mce1965:

So “Up the Wooden Hills to Bedfordshire” does mean going upstairs to bed! I’ve heard about “going to Bedfordshire” meaning going to sleep, so that’s what I was thinking it meant. Glad you confirmed it!
Avatar 7:38pm
cometothesunshine:

Yeah, I highly recommend Ian McLagan's book - really funny and detailed.

That Bedfordshire song was great. Love Ronnie Lane’s voice. Nice contrast to Marriot.
  7:43pm
sittingnexttobrian:

I decided recently if I could choose a band to have been in in the early 70's it'd have been Faces. Just the right amount of everything for that period. Except I'm a real lightweight with booze.
