A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Loretta Lynn carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

@Jake OK! Happy to report our elevators are working in Hell's Kitchen. Maybe you can take a fire pole to lunch?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 8/30/18 9:46am Itzall Ablurr:

Jake, I do, I do. And I like to think that maybe just maybe some of that dough helps keep the band in ramen.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 8/30/18 9:48am JakeGould:

@Itzall: I was once on Twitter joking with Arrington De Dionyso about how bad the royalty system is. He mentioned some hilariously typical $1 and change royalty check he received. I joked you could probably just walk around your neighborhood and find money money that way. The next day I found $2 on the street. I MADE MORE MONEY THAN A WORKING MUSICIAN THAT DAY!!!

Haha. Funny/Sad, right? I'm sure you've heard about the zillionth-of-a-penny type royalties they "earn" for use online too. Still I buy the records and even CDs (I know, so not hip).

Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 8/30/18 10:20am melinda:

Tap dancing is hard. I quit after a few lessons, but it didn't help that the classes were held in a hot stuffy room on the top floor of an old recreation center building.

meredith, he (Crumb) is one of the world's greatest living artists in my opinion. Some of his "serious" figure studies really show his genius. And, of course Mr. Natural.

@ngh I've also heard some very good "non-traditional" trumpet solos, maybe you could go for that
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 8/30/18 10:41am The Oscar:

At every single birthday and Christmas from when I was 10 to when I was 17, one grown relative or another would pull me aside to inform me that they *almost* got me some R. Crumb thing or another, but then decided that would be inappropriate. As a result, R. Crumb became sort of a mythical figure for me growing up.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 8/30/18 10:42am JakeGould:

If Robert Crumb is reading this, please give money to the station here: pledge.wfmu.org

Also, Picasso, Miro, and tons of others are better artists than Robert Crumb. His main level of fame comes from applying that level of skill to comics. Past that, I’m not the only one who doesn’t worship at his inkwell. Moebius (Jean Giraud) is amazing but nobody has made him some art diety.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 8/30/18 10:43am melinda:

I felt sort of creeped out and conflicted after watching Crumb (the film). It would be interesting to re-watch.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 8/30/18 10:44am meredith:

@melinda I had the same reaction! But for some reason, I enjoy conflict with my art. Not all the time, but often.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 8/30/18 10:47am The Oscar:

I'm not sure I've ever heard a bad song about hamburgers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 8/30/18 10:47am JakeGould:

Sorry to sound like a snob, but at a certain point in my life I held onto the (misbegotten) idea that museums and “high art” were snotty and bad and somehow the world of hipster “comix” was more real.

Once I got past prejudices others put in my head, I realized in the great scheme of things there are tons of other artists I was never exposed to that are as good or better than “underground” crap.

And yes, there are definitely some great comic artists out there. No doubt. But I’m personally tired of the incredible self-importance of that world.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 8/30/18 10:47am JakeGould:

@TheOscar: What about that disco hit, “Hamburgers (For Nazis)?”
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 8/30/18 10:48am melinda:

@meredith I'm better with that conflict than I was back then, that's why I might watch it again. Also, his brother was the creepiest in that film. It's a great study of family weirdness.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 8/30/18 10:49am JakeGould:

@melinda: The whole Crumb family is a creep-fest.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 8/30/18 10:50am fred:

@JakeGould: Moebius is pretty much an art deity in France
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 8/30/18 10:51am Mick:

I just learned that Paul Taylor passed. Speaking of near-deities.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 8/30/18 10:52am melinda:

I don't see the comics world as being more self-important than the "high art" world at all, it's just expanded and received more attention in the last 20 years or so, which it deserves.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 8/30/18 10:52am Lewis:

does MacDonalds count "hamburgers served" or calculate it?... counting into the billions is not easy...

Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 8/30/18 10:53am Webhamster Henry:

Jesse Crumb died recently (R's older son). And indeed, Moebius is an art deity in France.
Trolling around the internet looking for drawings reveals there are a great number of fantastic artists out there - I say, this is not horse race.

Crumb talked records with DJ Mac a few years ago:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 8/30/18 10:54am JakeGould:

@Lewis: I think they stopped attempting exact numbers sometime in the 1980s, right? Yes! I am right! “The number continued to rise: 5 billion in 1969, 15 billion in 1974, 30 billion in 1979, and 45 billion in 1983. After that, the company simply began adding 5 billion to the number every year, topping out at 99 billion in 1993. Sometime after that, the signs were updated to “BILLIONS AND BILLIONS SERVED,” and they haven’t changed since.” www.thedailymeal.com...

@Henry there is a Youtube vid of them chatting, as well. If I remember correctly Crumb is sitting in one of those giant hand chairs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 8/30/18 10:56am The Oscar:

Back in the '90s one of the Ninja Turtles guys opened a whole museum of comic book art out in Northampton, MA, with original art going back to Jack Kirby and the like. It only lasted a few years, but it was one of my favorite places as a kid. I fondly remember going to a signing by Jeff Smith (Bone), and got an original sketch which is on my wall to this day.

When Charles Schultz died (for example) there were a lot of indie comic artist who said essentially, “I always thought he was some mainstream jerk, but now I realize how great he was…” The world of indie art is filled with that kinda knee-jerk contrarianism.

@melinda: Sad reality is J.K. Rowling’s published author name uses initials because a female name on books is perceived to not be a good thing. Sad and kinda pathetic if you think about how of all the forms of published media don’t go out of the way to mask a creator’s name… Except for the oldest form of published media.

Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 8/30/18 11:23am Passaic River Blues:

Wow, Groff provides a cavalcade of recommendations! One of the suggested authors, Marie-Claire Blais of Quebec, is definitely someone I should investigate further. I've only read one of her books, "Season in the Life of Emmanuel", and it was bleak as hell, my personal sweet spot.

Also, really love her reinterpretation of Jean Craighead George and "My Side of the Mountain": "Over the decades since I first found the books to be rollicking adventure stories, they’ve become chilling horror stories of lonely children lost and desperate to survive in unforgiving wilderness."

MSotM was probably my favorite book from childhood but, I suspect, something that would prove upon re-reading to be less an adventure tale than one of loneliness and alienation, which, again, is fine by me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 8/30/18 11:23am melinda:

@coel I don't know if it would affect mine.
@Henry great list. The Twisted Sisters anthology was one of my first intros to indie comics. I recently read Mimi Pond's book The Customer is Always Right, another excellent one. Somewhat autobiographical.

Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 8/30/18 11:26am JakeGould:

@WebhamsterHenry: But on the topic of “Perseolis,” there is—at least I consider—the bizarre case of Craig Thompson’s “Habibi.” A Christian American white guy writes Middle Eastern “romance” comic… And it’s praised, but I find it’s mere existence tone deaf. But few people really take it to task for that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 8/30/18 11:29am coelacanth∅:

the books i read are more often than not recommendations from friends/friendly acquaintances. there are more males than females recommended, which might say something about the people in my more-"progressive"-than-average-in-gender-issues community; but more likely it's because i read mostly old books by dead authors.
