Carmen Marsico of Newpoli: Dynamic New Directions in Italian Roots Music

Hear this show now: Pop-up listen Pop-up player! | Add or read comments

Boston-based Newpoli brilliantly re-imagines the lively tarantella and other sounds of Southern Italy and around the Mediterranean.

UK world music magazine Songlines calls Newpoli "A brilliant outfit...who grab southern Italian traditional music by the neck and recast it in a dramatic style."

The band celebrates the release of an excellent new album of traditional and original songs, Mediterraneo, with a big show as part of the New York Gypsy Festival at Drom, 85 Avenue A in the East Village on Friday night October 5th at 9 pm.

Newpoli's Carmen Marsico joins us to introduce the album and contrast and compare some of the traditional source songs with Newpoli's inventive re-imaginings.

From the event web page http://tiny.cc/delgres-joespub18:

When Napoleon reinstated slavery in the Caribbean Island of Guadalupe in 1802 many people were exiled or fled, some of which went to New Orleans. It is from this perspective that Delgres, made up of Pascal Danae, Rafgee and Baptiste Brondy, revisits the blended songs, dances and tears of the long-lost, drifting souls of New-Orleans. The powerful trio - a musical missing link between French, caribbean and US cultures - was formed by Pascal Danaë, Baptiste Brondy and Rafgee in 2015. That same year Delgres was awarded Best World Music Album at the Victoires de la musique (French “Grammy“ awards). Delgres’ sound is soaked in blues. though urban and open to the world, and sounds somewhere between Ali Farka Toure, Tinariwen and the Black keys.

Good Evening, Rob and everyone!
happy to be home and able to listen LIVE :)
loving the Gypsy vibe! my Mom's birthday is on 9/24 (she would have been 93); she was ALWAYS so proud of her Gypsy heritage (she had no problem with the word "Gypsy" -- did not see it as an insult or anything -- but totally understood why some preferred the term "Roma")
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:39pm Rob W:

Good evening slugluv!
Avatar 6:39pm sispus:

Enjoy it, Rob. I had the opportunity to make an interview with her in Istanbul years ago. She herself is also a very sweet person :)
Avatar 6:44pm sispus:

(Sorry for my poor english, by the way) Interview was for an academic work, but it turned to a pleasant conversation.

Avatar 7:56pm TDK60:

Hi Rob. Wow, unfamiliar with this Italian music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:56pm Rob W:

Well there's always something new (or old) under the sun TDK60!
Avatar 8:07pm TDK60:

Didn't know there's Italian music influenced by Arabic sounds, but come to think of it, they are across the sea from each other.
Avatar 8:08pm slugluv1313:

MESMERIZING!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:15pm Rob Weisberg:

There are historical connections TDK60 and Newpoli kinda refers to that in some of their songs. But they also bring in influences from around the Mediterranean and beyond that aren't necessarily just as part of their broader sound, as suggested by the title of their new album, Mediterraneo. Newpoli is based in Boston actually but there are groups in Italy that also are creating a similar kind of pan-Mediterranean sound.
Avatar 8:21pm TDK60:

Thanks for explaining DJ RW. Pan-mediterranea!- from Catalans to Corsicans to Greeks to Lebanese to Cypriots to Algerians, on and on...
  8:23pm JakeGould:

what TDK60 expresses is why I like this show. In the Western world genres are really often pigeonholed and focused on only a small slice of that genre. So one thinks “That’s all there is!” But there is a genuine massive swath of art and music outside of the Western world most people are not exposed to. More power to the crate diggers outside of the U.S. and the U.K.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:26pm Megaroni:

Brava belledonne! Happy full moon TPSP!

Another fine show. Appreciate the "World Covers! mix CD as a premium. Great group tonight. They need to play in the "deep" south. It's a big world isn't it. 'Just over the hill and a river is a different sound'. Much love.
