Mrs. Parq and I are making our way through the third season of "The Man in the High Castle". I need not elaborate, this cheerful nod to the real-life Berlin is a bit of cognitive dissonance.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:16pm
David D:

Parq - yes, I can imagine!
Avatar 🚂 4:24pm

I thought the Ezsett was discontinued from the modern German language 20 years ago, it make it easier for me to spell scheisse....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:26pm
David D:

Sorry, NGH, they just "simplified" the rules to make it ß after long vowels, so it's still Scheiße after all. But Schloss instead of Schloß. I know that made it really simple...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:29pm
fred:

@ngh: is that the same reform that turned "ö" into "oe"? That change didn't make life really simple for one of my bosses who has documents with both spellings... It's not as if the French administration was aware of these subtleties
Avatar 4:32pm
Carmichael:

i before e, except after c. And y is sometimes a vowel.

Hallo David, wie geht's?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:37pm
Doug Schulkind:

Hello, David and fellow passengers!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:38pm
David D:

Fred: Oe is only used if to replace the ö if it technically difficult to use it. The umlauts/dots are the only spelling regularly used in German-speaking countries. I'm sure the French administration manage the best they can.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:39pm
David D:

Hallo Stanley and Doug!

Sem, that Sarah lady from "The Incredibles" is a vowel, too.

northguineahills:

Gee, I can't think of any more songs named "Berlin". what are we to do?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:56pm

@David: German has a pretty lame diacritics game. Look at Vietnamese to see how it's done (I'm kind of a Unicode geek)
Avatar 4:56pm
glenn:

i didn't say i was going to be partaking.

FL may be backwards, but at least my town FINALLY got three legal medicinal mj dispensaries. That said, w/in city limits, as long as you're not obnoxious or a dick, the cops here usually ignore any smoking (see it all the time w/in a cop's nose all the time).

mj is the only thing that mostly helps my insomnia, although 1/4 ounce lasts me a year.
Avatar 4:59pm
glenn:

totally happy. and soon i won't have to hear about it anymore.

Turkish and Romanian have fun diacritic marks as well. There still developing the Kazakhstani latin diacritics, since it's been about a year since they've adopted the Latin alphabet.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 5:04pm
Webhamster Henry:

Unicode can combine a whole lot of diacriticals. If you look at a glyph collection, especially for phonetic alphabet use, it's pretty astounding!

@ngh: Great, another Kazakh script. As if I didn't have enough trouble googling a Kazakh singer I like a lot thanks to random transliteration

Carmichael: That is the perfect response.
Avatar 🚂 5:15pm

@fred: third Kazakh script in a century (Arabic/Cyrillic/Latin).

For 15 years, scholars have been requesting Old Hanzi oracle bone script in unicode, but to no avail....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:17pm
David D:

NGH: Oracle bone script would definitely have my vote.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:20pm
fred:

@ngh: they're too busy adding emojis (which may actually improve Unicode support beyond the 16-bit range, the way Beyoncé shut up many 7-bit holdovers in the music industry)

northguineahills:

wait, there is a Linear A unicode? it hasn't been deciphered yet!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:46pm

Mekanik Destrüktiw Komandöh kinda reminded me of Khlam
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:49pm
fred:

Is that name a nod to Magma?
Avatar 🚂 5:52pm

Still haven't found a restaurant outside of Japan that makes yakisoba as well as I can (and that includes NYC)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:53pm

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:55pm
David D:

Fred: Yes, thanks - that was what I was trying to come up on mic before.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:55pm

(The Magma, not the Khlam, of course!)
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 5:59pm
Stanley:

Have been listening and enjoying but now time for bed.
Thanks, David.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:01pm
David D:

Thanks and good night, Stanley!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:01pm
fred:

Fitting that Magma came up, there are a lot of diacritics in Kobaïan. A friend did a documentary about their tour in China, one of the rewards was having Christian Vander giving pledgers a Kobaïan name.
I don't know much about their music, though
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:04pm
David D:

Maybe I'll play their original Mekanik at some point - funky 70s stuff.

I think Oliver Benoit's tenure as director of the ONJ ends this year, it might take a different direction then
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:12pm

Fred: I see Frédéric Maurin will be next. I'll have to see what he's done before...

Windy Windhoek? (I know there are songs in Deutsche about Windhoek.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:37pm

I could also go for a Kinshasa vs Brazzaville cage match showdown, two Congos enter, only one exits! (to be refereed by a Belgian....wait, too soon???)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:40pm
David D:

NGH: Good idea, in any case I'm sure there will be a -ville or two...
Avatar 🚂 6:41pm
northguineahills:

I've found old comics and postcards about Windhoek in Deustsche online (there still is a small minority Germany speaking population, and even an German kreole (that had nearly died out).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:42pm
David D:

The creole must be fascinating - I will have to look for that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:44pm
David D:

Much of this set is also a linguistic tribute to the Berlin dialect.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:50pm
Doug Schulkind:

And it's a tribute to you and your wonderful selections, David.
Avatar 🚂 6:50pm
northguineahills:

Of course, Namibia was where the Germans got their start on genocide (the Hereros and Namaqua). But it was the British next door who started the concept of the concentration camp on the Afrikaners during the Boer Wars. (ok, only happy thoughts now!)

I can only tell the difference b/tn High and Low German (Bavarian especially) on the former).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:51pm
David D:

Thanks, Doug! I will blush a bit and then go on mic...
Avatar 🚂 6:54pm

David D:

And thanks NGH and everyone - have a great week...
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 7:59pm
Webhamster Henry:

I had to cut out - did you play anything with dialogue in Berliner Accent? It's one I don't know too well!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:06pm
David D:

Yes, Henry, most of the oldest tracks towards the end feature a strong Berlin dialect.
