I love speech generators
Avatar 3:16pm
Archivist Vivian [Dr. Airlines]:

Text To Speech is great. The best parts are finding weird sound effects you can make with them, and hearing what words they can't pronounce.

Gonna transfer to the tablet so see you all in the armchair! :-)

I've only ever used text to speech for not serious endeavours (silly videos, purposely dumb, silly music), it's always fun. There's a voice out there that sounds a lot like Yoda.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:23pm

I've heard something like this on Shirley&Spinoza- was not aware of the vaporwave
Avatar 3:26pm
Archivist Vivian [Dr. Airlines]:

For extreme Vaporwave aesthetic, go to a local mall and listen to this music. If the mall is run down and nearly abandoned, that adds an even better effect.

If you like this stuff, I highly suggest you listen to the K-Mart background music tapes. I've sampled them in a vaporwave project I did in mid 2017. It's really something. archive.org...

This disk was included in the WFMU Catalogue:

Weird Japanese instrumentals originally composed as soundtracks for Japanese TV commercials. If only there was stuff this interesting on American TV. Shimizu's a killer music pitchman, hit and run with sound collage, twittering computers, brief rushes from one type of music to another, repetition to lull consumers into a buying coma. This cd contains 23 tracks clocking in at two minutes or less, and one piece worked up for a computer animation short. Commercials Shimizu has composed and arranged for read like a Japanese Fortune 500 - Ricoh, Honda, Seiko, Shiseido, and, of course, Bridgestone.

production 78s ?? like 50s easy-listening ?
  3:51pm

Does the equipment to make vaporwave have any bearing on the aesthetics.. i.e. using old 12bit/8bit samplers? I know that is important in boom bap.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:00pm

@Oliverr The records were in fact Roger Roger records!
Avatar 4:00pm

Avatar 4:10pm

You should look into Jean-Michel Jarre's work. He had one album that only had one copy made of, and the master tape was burned. It's an incredible piece of work.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:10pm
Rich in Washington:

HA! I bought that Musique Idiot LP on a whim, unheard but it seems entirely unplayable within a show.
Avatar 4:12pm
Otis Fodder:

I have had that Roger Roger LP, along with a couple other fun records (gags and animals something or other). The one that remains on my shelf is this one and actually fits in with the show today on theme/sound, www.discogs.com...

The Klaus album, is that Claude Larsons?
Avatar 4:19pm
Otis Fodder:

Ahhh, same person. Did not know that.
Avatar 4:20pm
Archivist Vivian [Dr. Airlines]:

Zoolook is a great Jarre album. Read up on Musique Por Supermarche. That's the album that he only made one copy of. It was scored for an art exhibit his mate did and he wanted it to be one of a kind. He burned the master tape. It's incredible stuff, it was broadcast on Radio Luxembourg and you can hear a poor quality copy of the album online.
Avatar 4:21pm
Archivist Vivian [Dr. Airlines]:

Klaus Netzle is his real name, but he has released stuff mostly under the name Claude Larson. Also names like Carlos Futura, VC People, Elmulab, and has made music in groups such as Sax-Bone Connection and Power Pack, the latter of which I enjoy the most.
Avatar 4:22pm
Otis Fodder:

I can get into Zoolook now and I like it. When it was released, I hated it. But I was 15 in high school. Funny looking back, it was so uncool as a kid, but now it's great!
Avatar 4:22pm
Oliverrr:

I like that that Seinwave had canned laughter samples !!
Avatar 4:23pm
Archivist Vivian [Dr. Airlines]:

I actually have a nice story that spans several years on one of Klaus Netzle's Power Pack LPs. A guy from Iran posted a collection of electronic songs by unknown people to his youtube, and we became friends. For the next few years, we discovered many of these songs and who they were by. This one we discovered was by a group named Power Pack. I ended up doing a lot of looking and found the LP it was from on some shady German website and bought it.

That was recorded as part of an unreleased tape that was influenced by the early works of The Residents. Many of the songs from that unreleased tape are on that Archivbox compilation.

Dan.. that last track was reminding a bit of "Space - Magic Fly" (1977)

I'm still a huge fan of the spaces in v a p o r w a v e -- it's awesome how that kinda worked it's way across the visual aspect of the music.

genre = pattern to me

Yeah, yeah!- Paper Rad, etc...look all that stuff up!
Just 'cause after listening to y'all's show for 2 hours now...I keep going: ooo!- these guys would totally love these other neat multi-media artists! (Which I *think* are in the same vein??)
Jacob (who started Paper Rad) was a local (Chapel Hill) kid here in the 90's, but I didn't meet him until much later when I helped with "Media Archaeology" in Houston. (2006?)

Our local mall is dying in bits and pieces. But it's not completely dead year.
Avatar 5:19pm
Archivist Vivian [Dr. Airlines]:

I will walk around in malls and listen to music like this for fun sometimes. But I usually listen to the actual stuff and not the edited vaporwave.

Oliver - not familiar?

that sound of music playing in malls is very vaporwave to. I consider it part of the aesthetic

In the other part of the house, my wife is listening to Soma.fm station Groove Salad and it doesn't sound too many degrees off from some of this music.
  5:21pm
Martinibomb:

My dad had a big cavernous machine shop that I worked in.. sweeping floors. the 80s AM stations would be playing kinda yacht/soft rock and I absolutely adore that sound in a big reverb drenched space. It really transports me
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:22pm

I still have dreams of wandering through the malls of my childhood.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:22pm

Yeah! Extra reverb! Definitely transformative to music.
  5:22pm

So I think the sound of the spaces people heard the source material is important to the genre to. That's my argument.

Martinibomb - yeah mall reverb is definitely a big part of the a e s t h e t i c !

I have a recording I made using those K-Mart background music tapes. I added reverb and put some of the "attention K-Mart shoppers" announcements spread throughout it.

My wife lost both her flip phone and digital camera again recently, nearly prompting me to buy her a smartphone, but she just about an hour ago came in to show me she found them. I dodged a tech tutoring bullet.

I don't trust me with reverb. I always say, when I dial in the amount of reverb that sounds right to me, dial it down 15% in mixdown.

If you like some of this stuff here, you should listen to Junko Ohashi, who was a famous singer in Japan during the 80s. Unfortunately, she was recently diagnosed with esophageal cancer, but she has an incredible voice.

oh yeah I like that stuff too.Junko Ohashi - I love you is a cool track
Avatar 5:44pm

www.youtube.com... This is a compilation album Ohashi released in '84. It's exactly what the album's name says. Magical. The cover art is beautiful. Being a New Yorker who had been to the WTC before the incident, it is kind of sad to look at.

The music video for it is kind of stupid. It's just women doing sexual workouts in a dance studio. I'm probably the biggest lesbian I know, but music videos with sexy girls doing sexy activity is really boring to me.

Cowley was another great talent we lost too soon due to AIDS in the early 80s. Klaus Nomi was another. I spent a long time trying to find hard-to-find Klaus Nomi recordings back in early 2017 but didn't have all that much success.
