schnall:

True story: during the blackout of ... uh... a few years back I got stuck in New York, trying to get back to NJ with no success, so I stopped at a bar around 42 street. A polite woman was having no luck ordering do I ordered a beer for her in my gruff NJ way and we got to talking. It turned out she's an actress, sho is best known playing a nun with her face burning off in a horror film ( directed by a guy who coincedentially I often commuted. With back in the day). So I guess that answers the question.
  12:27am

Thank you Mankato Fish! Yes, this is really flying by. I want it to last and last.

If there's blood in the toilet but you pretend you don't see it does that mean a nun's face doesn't melt?

rw, while working on the show I happened upon the Gus Van Sant version of Psycho, and that made me want to watch the real one again. But it's one of those movies (like Harold and Maude, which I should take on one day) that i know do well I don't think I could watch it fresh again ever.

Vertigo is another one of those films that we could watch over and over. But the initial experience cannot be repeated.
  12:56am

I think the Hitchcock movie that best stands up to repeated viewings is The Birds. Motives remain mysterious no matter how often viewed. Strangely satisfying.

rw seeing the birds on tv scared hell out of me when i was little - much more than psycho did. (i think i was maybe 6 when i saw the birds and maybe 10 when i saw psycho, but still)
i'd like to see it again now, though there are so many movies i've never seen that will have to be higher on my list.
  1:31am
rw:

I have vague memories of seeing part of The Birds on TV as a kid. So long ago, but I remember it being mostly confusing. I couldn't figure out why the people were scared of birds.
  1:35am
rw:

Also... I have a memory of throwing Doritos into the air off the back of a small boat and the entire sky filling with seagulls. There may have been marijuana too. For us, not the birds.
  1:38am
rw:

And... my friend Dave used to make a grocery bag full of popcorn every morning when he was working in San Pedro. He said the gulls would recognize his truck and follow him to the job site.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 1:42am
coelacanth∅:

haha he popped the corn just for them?
  1:45am
rw:

Every morning! I think he started to feel responsible.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 1:47am
coelacanth∅:

i don't remember the birds well. i do remember that some of the fear was based on subtle indications. but as you have witnessed birds can and do work with a hive mind sometimes. i think that's why the movie scared me so much as a child; whereas psycho was not something that could've happened to me.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 1:48am
coelacanth∅:

did they ever follow him home? THAT WOULD SUCK!
  2:00am
yippie:

the killer nun is actually a movie with a killer soundtrack by alessandro alessandroni
  2:02am
rw:

Dave's an interesting guy. I have lots of stories about him. He's got even more. Related, I was brainstorming with him one time about making a giant bird feeder and he kept wanting me to build a tube that would shoot popcorn into the air. An hour later he called back and said, "Hey, I built it. Come over and check it out" He had hooked up an air pop machine to a dryer fan and a piece of drain pipe hooked to the side of his house and was shooting popcorn into the sky.

when i had my own garden i bought 1-2 big bags of sunflower seeds each season. some people said it would just attract more birds -and it did; but they almost never bothered any of my plants. birds will always finds your garden. it's stupid to think they wont be there anyway, eating your seeds before they grow, eating your strawberries and sometimes eating the seeds out of plants that you purposely let go to seed for harvest. i kept them otherwise satisfied + i enjoyed having them there. for some reason they never shit in my garden, even though they perched on the structure i made to hang the feeder from.
  2:12am
rw:

That's cool. It's fun when there are a ton of birds in your back yard. Cats like bird feeders too. And squirrels.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 2:12am
coelacanth∅:

oh and as the gulls learned your friend's truck, some of these birds knew when i got to the community garden and would essentially escort me on my walk from the front to the far back where my plot was.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 2:14am
coelacanth∅:

yeah squirrels can really ruin it for the birds! smart ones they are

It is frustrating when the critters get your fruits and vegetables though. And that's cool that the birds would follow you too!

some of those birds would be okay with me working directly under or next to them, after a while. and we'd whistle back and forth...or maybe i imagined that we were doing that!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 2:20am
coelacanth∅:

sorry rw to go on - i really miss it.

hi Werewolf
  2:26am
rw:

coel, that's fine. I'm trying to resist the temptation to go on about it too! There's a bird sanctuary out here that used to and may still have a viewing room for hummingbirds. It's a room with benches on one side and a window on the other (maybe there's no glass in the window. I can't remember for sure). Anyway outside there are maybe a dozen hummingbird feeders and tons of hummingbirds flying around.
  2:31am
rw:

I've tried a couple times to recreate it at my house but the feeders always leak and I can never get it together enough to keep the things filled.

Okay, I've gotta go. Thank you again Rich! Always enjoy the Friday night Carcass and the loopy Midnight Matinee too!
