Fugazi friday

Howdy! I was listening to Band of Gypsys last week and definitely heard some Fugazi rhythms in that. I know Ian Mackaye is a big Hendrix fan but that was the first time I think I picked out a direct influence.

RIP Ian so sad

Hello, Creamo et Blastrodeurs.

@Howard F , yes definitely! - more specifically I was listening to the Live At Fillmore East. I also heard some Fugazi in Stone Free and Power of Soul.

What is the best Minor Threat album to get? Fugazi? I mean if you could only pick one as an intro?

@Neil- if you're pickup up physical media, you can get the entire MT discography on one CD from Dischord.

Yeah, Complete Discography for MT. Hi Blastards, CC!

As far as Fugazi, my intro pick would be "Repeater", followed by "13 Songs".

@Wild Neil - In On the Kill Taker is my favorite. I think Fugazi is a band that progressed with each album. I find their earliest stuff good but their mid to late 90s albums are excellent.

The Flex Your Head comp, by Dischord, was my introduction to DC Hardcore. Pretty amazing collection.

Hi DJ CC. Saw Fugazi in the '90s, great show. Preachy, so what? '91 is when "punk" broke: '80s punkers were worn out, and broke.

Howard F: Lungfish were interesting. Sort of poetry to almost-psychy drone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:38pm
tim from champaign:

Lungfish is the best! I caught Fugazi 3 times. August 1991 in Kalamazoo MI with Nation of Ulysses and Trenchmouth, summer 1993 in Green Bay WI with Unrest and summer 1994 in Plymouth MI with Laughing Hyenas and Slant 6.
Avatar 3:41pm
Howard F:

TDK60: Absolutely! They were oddball band on Dischord. Artificial Horizon is a great record.
Avatar 3:43pm
TDK60:

Saw M.D.C. a few times in the '80s -wild. Played with C.O.C. a few times. Saw the DKs 1x, Black Flag a few times. Never saw Husker Du, oh well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:48pm
crateslinger:

That's pretty impressive TDK60. I crashed with MDC in SF for a weekend, and hung out with COC a couple times in NYC, but never saw DK's, BF, or HD.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:51pm
crateslinger:

No wait, I think I saw Husker Du at the Middle East Cafe in Boston in 86 or 87.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:52pm
Stevel:

Saw Husker Du a bunch in Madison, often with the Replacements, '82-'84. Only caught DKs and BF once, both in Denver one summer, soon after Rollins joined BF ('83?)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:52pm
ultradamno:

I saw HD at The Jockey Club around that time...I think Battalion of Saints might have been on the bill.
Avatar 3:53pm
TDK60:

Saw lots of less-known H/C bands too. Raw Power from Italy, Stretchmarks from Canada, Rhythm Pigs from El Paso, The Offenders from Austin, Adrenalin O.D. from NJ, etc., etc....
Avatar 3:54pm
Howard F:

Stevel: did it feel like you were seeing something important? or was it just another cool show?

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:55pm
SSS:

Only to you my friend.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:57pm
ultradamno:

@crateslinger Indiana, but spent a lot of time there

@TDK I saw Raw Power with Riistetyt. Man, they HATED one another!
Avatar 3:57pm
TDK60:

...The Five and Carsickness, both from Pittsburgh; Carsickness was like punk meets jazzy art rock.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:58pm
Stevel:

Howard F: Re. BF, I was impressed to be there. It was an afternoon all-ages show. Sparsely attended and very raw. I'd heard a few cuts, prior which were vaguely terrifying in all the best ways. Rollins had long hair and was warming up by running up the walls (taking three steps) like any good skateboarder.

DKs was super special, as the show was shut down early by the fire marshal. I stood on a radiator to shoot photos which were not very good, but hey.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:59pm
Stevel:

Husker Du were more familiar, as were the Replacements. I tried not to miss any of their shows.
Avatar 3:59pm
TDK60:

ultradamno: So, the Finns and Italians weren't groovin' together. I saw Riistetyt too. We were disappointed as they'd left behind their hyper-speed-thrash for a more new wave sound.
Avatar 4:00pm
Howard F:

Stevel: DK's stand out to me as a great band. I believe they were a bit older and more proficient. Fresh Fruit is still a keeper for me.
Avatar 4:02pm
TDK60:

Howard & Stevel: The Dead Kennedys were great. A lot to say, and a bit older, they preceded the H/C thing by a few years I think.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:02pm
Stevel:

Howard F. I'd agree, although the Huskers did nothing but grow stronger. When I saw them, they were the best example of HC meets Psych/shifting melodic textures. Intense but melodic.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:03pm
ultradamno:

Riistetyt stayed at my friend's house in Muncie and left behind a pair of pants that stand on their own like a sculpture. They and Raw Power were on a MRR sponsored package tour. While Raw Power played they snapped at RP and heckled.

Yay Sauna Youth!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:06pm

Ultradamno - if that was in 87 I was there. Skinheads stole my leather jacket while I was sleeping on the couch.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:11pm

Yeah I guess I wasn't there. I don't even know who was playing, but it was some punk house in Muncie. Probably had a lot of shows. I can't remember details. I was pretty drunk from like 84 - 97. Not proud. Just saying.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:13pm

Punk house in Muncie, were the tenants all gals? Or maybe Modern Vending?

It was girls for sure.

Ok, I'm back
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:20pm
crateslinger:

Cool. I lived in the Yellow House in Cincinnati for about a year. I don't know if that means anything to anybody. We went to Dayton a lot, and Muncie a couple times. Mostlly the Jockey Club.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:23pm
ultradamno:

The Jockey should have been declared a national landmark. There was a sideroom I got to peruse a couple of times full of stuff from it's casino days like a table with little horses sticking out of slots for people to bet on...
Avatar 4:25pm
TDK60:

...forgot to mention more great Canadian H/C bands from the '80s: D.O.A., NoMeansNo, and S.N.F.U.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:26pm
crateslinger:

Yeah I went back there too - lots of mysteries. Remember Shorty with the cigar ash all over his shirt? There used to be a Jockey Club memorial website. Maybe it's still up. I'm not on it because I was just passing through, but you should check it out. Might see some familiar faces, if it still exists.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:27pm
crateslinger:

@TDK60 you forgot the greatest Canadian punk band of all:

Dayglow Abortions
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:31pm
crateslinger:

@Ultradamno - There's a girl who's on the comments board a lot who's from the Cinci 80's scene as well. I'm not going to out her here, but maybe you've talked to her. She's not on here as much as she was a few years ago.
  4:31pm
Mr. Palchepo.:

Greatest HC band of all NOTA from Tulsa. I stand behind that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:32pm
ultradamno:

Yeah, I definitely remember Shorty. One time a bunch of Muncie people went to see, I think it was The Vandals and Fang, but no bands or audience when we got there. Shorty served us Foster's and we watched Coal Miner's Daughter on TV and pledged to tell everyone we saw a hot new band called CMD.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:33pm
ultradamno:

I know Kat knows the Manwich people as do I (one of whom was one of the Punk Rock Sorority of Muncie girls)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:35pm
crateslinger:

I know Manwich and the girl you're talking about stayed with me and my girlfriend in my squat 25 years ago before she went to Ireland and married that guy, but I think she's back. She was my best friend's girlfriend, but everybody was in love with her.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:36pm
crateslinger:

I just last week had Thanksgiving with the Manwich guitar player's brother who was in 11,000 Switches.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:39pm
ultradamno:

She's still in MN, to best of my knowledge. But we were good friends (I even survived her saying "bloody" in every other sentence after coming back from Ireland)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:42pm
crateslinger:

That is amazing. She turned me on to Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Einstursende Neubeauten (pass the cigarette), and Rabelais. If you see her tell her I married that girl, but I would leave her in a second if she'll have me.

Nice to meet you Ultradamno but they're shutting off the lights so I gotta get on my bike. best...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:44pm
ultradamno:

I turned her onto The Birthday Party in Muncie, so by transitive properties I turned you onto Nick Cave ;)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:50pm

The idea that anyone was turned onto The Birthday Party in Muncie is nearly beyond belief! Did they appear there?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:52pm
