Medium Cool airs every Wednesday from 1-3pm Pacific and 4-6pm Eastern.

Wut?
  3:58pm
Martinibomb:

Yup you got me for 2 whole hours today Rich!
Avatar 3:59pm
Otis Fodder:

Nice, extended show hours!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:00pm
Rich in Washington:

OOO! The newly embiggened Medium Cool! Wouldn't that make it Maximum Cool now?
  4:01pm
Martinibomb:

sorta mediocre maximum.. like not quite all the way just a little shy
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:02pm
Rich in Washington:

Maxi Cool sounds like a menthol cigarette brand.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:03pm
DJ Jan:

:-)
Avatar 4:04pm
Otis Fodder:

I like that you extended to 2 hours, more time to stretch out the mix. Listening while working, not unlike the business of running Department S.
  4:04pm
Martinibomb:

yeah the 1 hour just felt cramped but 2 seems perfect.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:05pm
Rich in Washington:

I've been slightly tempted to do the same but it seems manageable at this point. Maybe if I ever cease doing my KBOO show...
Avatar 4:06pm
Mr Fab:

Double your pleasure, to quote old ads.
  4:07pm
Martinibomb:

this alan tew track always sounds slow to me because I sampled it and played it double speed
Avatar 4:07pm
Otis Fodder:

Both of youse guys have radio shows (plural). I'd be pressed at 3 hours if I had another show. But the crazy thing about radio, is I always want to do more hours. Just recently I was thinking about doing a late night show reading poems, short stories and playing sad lonely songs in the middle of the night for the insomnia crowd. I need to stop thinking and start hitting myself.
Avatar 4:08pm
Mr Fab:

Cease Rich, cease! I say for greedy selfish reasons. hey, it would save you that long drive into Portland, eh?
Avatar 4:09pm
Otis Fodder:

Nothing like creating and broadcasting from home in pajamas with snacks I tell ya.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:10pm
DJ Jan:

Otis, that would be a wonderfull breakfast show for me
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:11pm
DJ Jan:

However, the times I'm getting out of bed lately match perfectly with "wake and bake" :-)
Avatar 4:11pm
Otis Fodder:

Barrigozzi Group ... just recently discovered this song and album. Nice!!
  4:11pm
Martinibomb:

Yes I feel like I'm more of an audio explorer so I have no problem finding material to play. Other djs I've talked to are more currator or just kinda like what they like so they kinda hit the bottom some times. I'm recording live now instead of editing it in the DAW plus having my collecion around is weird so I haven't been pulling records ahead now.. just seeing what comes out..
Avatar 4:13pm
Otis Fodder:

@Jan - Might do it on a local station here in Montreal middle of the night or propose to Fab when slots open again. I have a proposal created I've been working on. Too loose for CBC but could work for College/FMU. Styled after the Franklyn MacCormack radio presenter. Anyhow, another idea on the shelf for now.
  4:13pm
Martinibomb:

I've had this Barrigozzi Group album since probably the late 90s? Never get tired of it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:14pm
Rich in Washington:

Despite the drive and tiredness, once I am there, I could probably spin all night, were it not for my day job and family like. I wish I could replicate the lushness of our automated air room at my house. It would make it much more easy.
Avatar 4:14pm
Otis Fodder:

I, ahem, downloaded it. OG copies are quite expensive these days, but it's in my noggin' when out digging in shops.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:15pm
Rich in Washington:

What's the community radio scene like up there, Otis? Or do they have good state-funded radio in Montreal?
Avatar 4:18pm
Otis Fodder:

Some great stations up here, most notably CKUT (where I would want to take the show later this year)... if I go back to doing radio outside of the home... just not sure. Last time I was at a college station was the late 1980s. It was pirate radio in Reno and Seattle in the 90s and then all online. But CKUT in Montreal is what I have my FM dial tuned into, great station - www.ckut.ca...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:18pm
Rich in Washington:

We need to get this stream listed on TuneIn. Users used to be able to submit unlisted stations but now it has to be done by someone with the proper station credentials, i.e., someone from WFMU.
Avatar 4:19pm
Otis Fodder:

...when I say 'take the show', not FP... a new show.
Avatar 4:19pm
Otis Fodder:

That's a good idea Rich!!
Avatar 4:19pm
Mr Fab:

Do you guys know quintron? I'm currently standing in the courtyard of LA's Museum of Contemporary Art where there's a Quintron project set up: an analog synthesizer that plays sounds triggered by weather cues. now all we need is weather!
Avatar 4:20pm
Otis Fodder:

Met him once in Montreal with Miss Pussycat, 8 or so years ago when they played here. Long time listener to those 2 wonderful cats.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:20pm
Rich in Washington:

Oh, I've heard of CKUT but don't know if I've ever tuned in.
The only other CA station I know if is CITR in Vancouver BC. It's almost like an American community radio station, for better or for worse.
  4:21pm
Martinibomb:

@Fab yup! Love Quintron I've been there too
Avatar 4:21pm
Otis Fodder:

Not familiar with radio in BC, checking out CITR now.
Avatar 4:22pm
Otis Fodder:

@Eric - Thanks for the recommendation of 'Enchanted Forest'. I have the LP here thanks to you!
  4:23pm

oh yessssss! Such a cool cool album!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:24pm

Does creeping on the grounds when it's shut down count?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:25pm
Rich in Washington:

I recently picked that one up, too. Wish there was more info about the recordings, process, etc.
  4:25pm
Martinibomb:

Oh wow! that's kinda on par with going into the catacombs in paris but oregon style
Avatar 4:26pm
Otis Fodder:

As a kid, growing up in the SF Bay Area, I went to a place, "Children's Fairyland" in Oakland a few times. Now, need to research that, I think I still have some old photos as a kid I need to dig up (and scan).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:26pm
Rich in Washington:

My in-laws lived nearby. Once my wife and I drove down to visit them, so we walked through the (real) woods and managed to hop a fence. It was all closed down/mothballed, I guess for renovations.
It was pretty surreal.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:27pm
Rich in Washington:

I also have dim memories of a place called Pixieland, which was somewhere in Oregon.
Avatar 4:28pm
Otis Fodder:

Surreal and a bet a bit creepy, in a post-apocalyptic way!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:28pm
Rich in Washington:

Oh. Get this. I just looked it up. It was in OTIS Oregon!
  4:28pm
Martinibomb:

gawd this mach one track is so weird like a marching band meets moog
Avatar 4:28pm
Otis Fodder:

There is an Otis Oregon?! I wonder if that is where I should be, is it calling to me?! Hello, home.
Avatar 4:29pm
Otis Fodder:

Yea, floating through space all peaceful and then some circus clowns in space suits float by?!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:30pm
DJ Jan:

Yes, just the kinda stuff I like!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:30pm
Rich in Washington:

It's right outside of Lincoln City, OR, a once placid seaside town, now filled with retirement condos and gambling casinos.
Avatar 4:32pm
Otis Fodder:

@Jan - Me too!
Avatar 4:33pm
Otis Fodder:

Groovy show today. Coming off the last show library themes. I think about that often doing my show coming off Georgy's and finishing going into Don's. Try to ease in/out, flow.
Avatar 4:34pm
Otis Fodder:

Back in 30min... gotta jump into a work call.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:39pm
DJ Jan:

I love this going through all genres, MB
Avatar 4:42pm
Mr Fab:

I have a Link Wray tribute album called "Guitar Ace," but oops, not this one. Must get.
I saw the man in what was his last ever concert. Great show.
  4:42pm
Martinibomb:

yeah I like to think it all fits together somehow but I like cutting a wide path and don't really even like to think about genre much haha
  4:43pm
Martinibomb:

@MrFab I saw him in the mid90s tour? Maybe the same one? like 96/97 maybe? He was awesome!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:44pm
Rich in Washington:

I recently opened a book I haven't looked at in decades and out fell a Link Wray bumper sticker I was apparently using as a bookmark. It was from the one time I saw him in Portland sometime in the 90s.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:45pm
DJ Jan:

In my FDL-show on mixcloud I even try to include classical music, but apart from that of after 1900 it's always is difficult
Avatar 4:45pm
Mr Fab:

Isn't this "53rd and Third"?
  4:45pm
Martinibomb:

@Rich was it at crystal ballroom?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:46pm
DJ Jan:

Now I said that... sometimes the medieval and renaissance music is easier too, because it connects with folk music somehow
  4:47pm
Martinibomb:

@MrFab I thought it sounded familiar.. let me go check the label and see if I just wrote it down wrong or what...
Avatar 4:47pm
Mr Fab:

Just found this: "On July 16, 2005, Link Wray played "Rumble" for the last time before an audience, in Glendale, California. On November 5 of that year he passed away." Yup, that was the one I went to.
  4:53pm
Martinibomb:

@Fab holy shit! He was pretty bad azz performer til the end it sounds like
  4:53pm
Martinibomb:

with this phonocomb record I think my brain just really liked anarachy and kept thinking about it.. cause I know what 53rd and 3rd is lol
  4:55pm
Martinibomb:

i made the background track that was playing on my modular synth
Avatar 4:55pm
Mr Fab:

yep, Link came out on stage in his black leather, dyed black long ponytail, shades, bashing away. Hunched over and hobbling around like an old man, but he rocked, and looked like he was having a good time..
  4:58pm
Martinibomb:

I was at that same show Rich was at. I remember him being just a solid solid showman. Sounded great. I would have bet he'd have lived an extra 10 years
Avatar 5:01pm
Mr Fab:

Whoah, wanna hear more o dat synth stuff, 'bomb!
  5:02pm
Martinibomb:

@Fab I've plugged my music setup into my DJ Mixer so I can kinda improvise sounds on the fly now
  5:04pm
Martinibomb:

I want to bring a *Piano bar* feel to my show. That's kind what I'm going for
Avatar 5:17pm
Mr Fab:

Thx for reminding me about Betty Hutton - must check out more of that crazy gal.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:17pm
DJ Jan:

Great show, Mb. I'll listen to the rest at breakfast. need to (try to) get some sleep now. Bye everyone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:18pm

Speaking of nancy Sinatra...is Pizzicato One related to Pizzicato 5?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:20pm
Rich in Washington:

The bass in this track is amazing.
  5:20pm
Martinibomb:

yup! this is Konishi by himself and yeah betty hutton is insane but every track she made is A+
Avatar 5:31pm

Missed Betty, The Blonde Bombshell. Love her and her on stage persona, beating up the boys in the band.
  5:32pm
Martinibomb:

This is one of my fave jazz tracks. I think the fingers in his left hand are playing in different time signatures
Avatar 5:33pm

I have hope that 101 Strings & The Goon Show collaborated in the studio on an album with Les Baxter producing. Oh please!

@Otis yes Logan died tragically young. His stuff is amazing! So if you haven't heard it all yet .. track it down
