Listen to this show: Pop-up listen Pop-up player!

This week:

Kimzilla and Emily decide that it’s time to go hunting for that big story. Furries! This episode is too good to fit in one hour, so it’s going to be broken up into two parts. Tonight we talk to Dan the Furry, Dr. Samuel Conway aka Uncle Kage, the chairman and chief organizer of Anthrocon and Fox Amoore a composer and pianist, who plays in a full fursuit! Next week we talk to Dr. Sharon Roberts who is a researcher that is focused on the science behind Anthropomorphism.

Our friend Andrew told me about furries 20 years ago or more, but it was our friend John who put me on to the C.S.I. episode that was a long buildup to the concluding line, "This was a case of fur and loathing in Las Vegas." So a shaggy dog story, another pun at a very high level of abstraction.

But it wasn't the only shaggy dog TV episode. There was the "3rd Rock from the Sun" entry that was a long buildup to a Village People gag as the closing shot.

Dr. Roberts:

@Tommy Only about 20% of furries have fursuits. They would wear them to conventions, or parades, or perhaps to a meet-up where they take over a bowling alley (with permission of the owners/management), but that would be about it. Furries go about their lives like everyone else sans fursuit.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:46pm
Julie:

@Tommy good to know. You look like several friends of mine.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:47pm

Wait if you don't have a fursuit how are you a furry? Does that make you a furry afficianado or something?

Avatar 7:48pm
Dr. Roberts:

@Richard Can one consider furries to be a variation of cosplay?
Yes, but because of the self-created identity component (furries make their own characters), it has significant benefits for identity formation, which is a associated with all kinds of developmental benefits.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:48pm
melinda:

@Julie I think it's about creating a character, even if you don't dress up as the character.

@melinda, well said! That is the impression I came away with—which isn’t what I thought at all. I assumed they all wore fur suits! I just thought that was the whole thing.
  7:50pm
kimzilla:

I love playing pretend, doing improv skits and that doesn’t need costumes. But it sure would make it more fun. Ask Emily about me borrowing a lion head. I was a different person.

This is what happens in the rituals of aboriginal cultures. Gets people out of themselves
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:56pm

@Emily I started out thinking of it as a fur suit thing too.
Avatar 7:56pm
Dr. Roberts:

@Tommy, yes we have documented the benefits of fantasy. We distinguish between fantasy (what furries typically do, which is taking a limited break) and escapism, of course. We have a longitudinal study examining the changes over time.
