Glad you're all enjoying it tho! :-)

@Katya - a lot of that goes on! :-)

I was super obsessed with Joe Meek about 25 years ago and read everything I could about him.. so it's fun hearing you kinda go back over the history today
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:42pm

First - the biggest of hugs to Katya and much love :-)
Second - I like a lapsang if I'm being posh, or just a regular builders if not. (PG Tips that kind of thing).

STILL haven't seen the Meek biopic "Telstar" - it's available in it's entirety on the youtubes.
Avatar 1:47pm
Katya Oddio:

Thanks for the tip, Mr Fab
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:47pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

I realised when I'd edited the playlist down that the records were considerably shorter than normal so I had nearly five minutes of burbling time between sets. So it's a rambling one this week - hence my need for tea ;-)
  1:47pm
Martinibomb:

I just got a subscription to Builders.. was drinking barry's but it's kinda harsh. Builders is way smoother. I like non-fancy tea. thanks! I love having Katya around again. Seems like old times
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:48pm
Jan Turkenburg:

@katya, the local radio is about to be shut down. I left in 2017, because it was a mess. But a new station is being founded now and I'm involved (as from today actually)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:48pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

You must see "Telstar"!!!! Con O'Neill is superb. I mean .. it's heartbreaking but brilliant and EVERYONE from then is in it.

@MrFab oh I totally forgot about that Meek biopic! Thanks for the reminder

Avatar 1:50pm
Katya Oddio:

Oh no, Jan! That was a beautiful place and everyone seemed so kind. Glad to hear a new station is on the way. Thanks, Martinibomb. Good to be here with you folks, rather than listening alone later or hearing you pop up on the household stream. You are all in there, floating on the air here at Rancho Oddio.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:51pm

Ooo! Is it sunny and lovely there? It's all grey and grim here so a bit of lovely sunshine would be nice :-)

Also -- all of you are invited to be guests on my Freeform Portland show. I can do video conference with people and broadcast it live.. just need music in advance.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:54pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

That's wonderful :-) I love the Dutch artist/empty property system as well. A friend of mine used to live in Amsterdam (he's a sculptor) and he lived rent free for nearly three years all over the city.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:54pm
Jan Turkenburg:

License is provided each 4 year. The station has to prove that in they meet the criteria.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:55pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

MB - that sounds like so much fun!!! :-)
  1:55pm
Martinibomb:

@Jan can you have more than one station in a town? Or they really limit it to just one.
Avatar 1:56pm

Will you still operate as "Vreemde Geluiden"? Damn, GG is so good. She makes me laugh and makes me say "a ha!" every time.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:57pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

GG is blushing! :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:58pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

Astoundingly, "I Hear A New World" was made in 1960. 1960. How is that possible???
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:00pm
Jan Turkenburg:

Vreemde geluiden has survived as a podcast, now calles Frame Duggy Louder, as it is in English now. But Vreemde Geluiden will return on radio, as an item in a weekly live-show starting of each friday in a few weeks. We're slowly and carefully building up programs.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:06pm

It's just so perfect. It's like Joe Meek condensed into 3 minutes. The echo, the reverb, the opera singer, the paranormal. Everything. Brilliance.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:10pm

I think we've discussed this here before, but for me, Telstar was the first song where I ever became aware of strange music. I used to love it when that song came on the radio. It was from outer space.

I say a bit later that it reminds me of This Mortal Coil and "Song to the Siren" :-)
  2:15pm

interesting yeah I can totally hear that connection - I wonder if this mortal coil was inspired by him?

I would hope so. I'd love that to be the case :-)

  2:17pm
Martinibomb:

I'm going to go focus on some writing i'm doing but I'm here listening and will check in again
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:18pm
Rich in Washington:

I've always wondered if the very early Residents were inspired by Meek. There are so many parallels with the sound of their sound and those of Meek's albums like the Blue Men record. The weird prepared piano, etc. I think a lot of it was expedience, working with what they had and a fairly primitive multitrack tape machine.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:18pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

OMG Otis - you love Roy Harper too???? I adore his music!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:19pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

God - imagine a Residents/Joe Meek collab.
Avatar 2:19pm
Otis Fodder:

I do, once I heard Another Day by Roy after TMC, I didn't think another version could break me down as much, but he did. And then I went on discovering his catalog. Many late night listens.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:20pm
Rich in Washington:

OMG! It's full of eyeballs and blue men!

Katya Oddio:

Residents without Hardy Fox, so sad to lose him. Heartbreaking.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:23pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

I mean ... I say I'm going to see The Residents ... but I could literally be seeing anyone to be fair. You never know.
Avatar 2:23pm
Mr Fab:

yeah, what is this thing called "the Residents" anyway? Any original members? Of course we would have no idea. At this point I suppose "The Residents" is a brand as much as a band.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:24pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

What made me sad about Hardy Fox was the lead up to his eventual passing. That wrapping up of loose ends and sort of saying "goodbye" :-(
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:24pm
Rich in Washington:

One original member, sadly. I've interviewed their Homer Flynn a few times, who sounds uncannily like one of the singers.
Avatar 2:25pm
Katya Oddio:

Definitely, Mr. Fab. They always were. When I was with that org, I learned about how scarcity of your brand made increased fanatical demand.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:25pm
Rich in Washington:

I'm mean, now it's just one guy. Hardy sort of stepped out of the shadows and revealed that he was the primary musician and later musical director.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:25pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

That's it. I'm going to start broadcasting in disguise. ;-)
Avatar 2:26pm
Katya Oddio:

Yes, GG. It reminded me of Bowie sying goodbye.

make yourself a cup of tea!!
Avatar 2:26pm

Indeed, RIP Hardy. Long live The Residents.
Avatar 2:26pm
Katya Oddio:

LOL @ Georgy broadcasting in a big ol' head mask!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:27pm
Rich in Washington:

They're/he's sort of trapped in this thing where the only way to make any money is to perform live on the road, something the Residents weren't really suited to. To keep the 'brand' alive, yes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:27pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

I may already be broadcasting like that. You never know!!! ;-)
Avatar 2:27pm
Katya Oddio:

Absolutely, Rich.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:28pm
Rich in Washington:

Hardy's passing really affected me in a way that say, Bowie did. Just really an end of an era for me. Probably also how he sort of took the mask off and told us who he was and that he was going.

When you're on radio, who would know!?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:28pm

I DO find live Residents entertaining, though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:29pm

Avatar 2:33pm

You folks are such a fix right in the veins, man. Not sure many in my music circles here in the desert are even clued in about Meek or the Residents. BTW, thanks to each of you for all the camaraderie about stuff we love AND for turning me on to sooooo many other sounds. Love you always for that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:34pm

This is fantastic, GeorgyGirl! I really had no idea of the length and breadth of Meek's pop work, just a few tracks I have and that one somewhat limited bootleg comp that came out recently-ish.
