Favoriting Cratedigger's Lung with Rich In Washington: Playlist from January 11, 2019 Favoriting

Rich in Washington's avatar View Rich in Washington's profile Favoriting

A three-hour exploration of excavations from the farthest reaches of humanity's hellish collective brain, through records, tapes, CDs, mostly scoured from country bumpkin thrift stores, creepy charity shops, backwoods junk stores, and even the internet - all mixed live. We don't judge, we just play 'em. Hosted by Rich in Washington.

Hi folks! Make yourself at home!
I'm redoing the show that didn't play last week because of a stream problem.
I'll be back to host starting at 7pm Eastern, 4pm, Pacific and Midnight in the UK.
See you then!

Cool! Vicki just sent me this album today. Along with the Rockford Files TV movies from the 1990s -- she's such a sweat heart

This is what I was listening to right before Flange and Frigate

Rich in Washington:

Hi, Mr. Fab!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:04pm
Rich in Washington:

I think it's from a Pathe newsreel, if I'm not mistaken.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:04pm
Webhamster Henry:

The little hooks open the eye sockets are run with a little pedal. I think you can find the video on archve.org.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:04pm
Rich in Washington:

It's really great, isn't it? You just can't stop listening to it all the way through.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:04pm
Webhamster Henry:

I can almost smell the offgassing vinyl.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:05pm
Rich in Washington:

Hi Webhamster Henry! Glad you could join us!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:05pm
Webhamster Henry:

The Mirror is great! Did you see the livestream of the movie?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:05pm
Rich in Washington:

I tried to run this show last week and it conked out but I think Mr. Fab has solved it for us.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:06pm
Rich in Washington:

I did, WH! I watched it while at work. Shhh!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:06pm

Thats what bandwidth is for!
Avatar 7:08pm
Mr Fab:

of course People Like Us has an occasional show here on WFMU, "Do or DIY."
Avatar 7:09pm

The Necks! A friend at work gave me a copy of Sex....one long track and yet I wasn't bored!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:09pm
Rich in Washington:

We're on her old stream!
I love how her visual work is almost seamless with her audio work. It's just fantastic.
Avatar 7:09pm
Mr Fab:

the show pooped out last week after this song. *fingers and toes crossed*
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:09pm

One of my fellow KBOO'rs turned me onto The Necks.

Bless you, Mr. Fab!
Avatar 7:12pm
Mr Fab:

think we crossed the danger zone. ha, you're welcome, but we really have to thank Engineer Jeff.

Really like this Rachel Taylor Brown album - after hearing "Portland" twice last week I checked it out on Bandcamp.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:13pm
Rich in Washington:

This song is about the lamentable state Portland finds itself in. Sit still long enough and they'll turn you into a condo or hipster eatery.
Avatar 7:14pm
Don-O:

Good damned luck, Portland!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:14pm
Rich in Washington:

She's brilliant. Really great musicianship and also rather dark and twisted. I've really enjoyed her albums and especially this one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:16pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

I'm gonna have to listen to the rest on archive ... Been up since 7am and it's just past midnight now. I thought I could make it!! Nooooooooooo! Thank you for a fabulous Friday everyone - I had a blast! :-)
Avatar 7:16pm

G'nite, DJGG. Remember naps!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:17pm

Night, GeorgyGirl! I can't stay up past midnight these days either!
Avatar 7:17pm

G'night Georgy, great show today!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:18pm
Rich in Washington:

This band is from LA. Their guitar player has played in The Grandmothers (zappa cover band) and also was in an incarnation of The Magic Band, post Beefheart.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:19pm
Rich in Washington:

Evil Genius, I mean.
Avatar 7:19pm
Mr Fab:

some parts of LA are getting Portland-ized - the tech bros are kicking out the wild n freaky residents of Venice to create "Silicon Beach." Cuz y'know, they're too cool to stay in Beverly hills with the other richies.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:20pm
Rich in Washington:

It's happening all over the West Coast. Really sad. Portland is unrecognizable to me now in lots of ways.
  7:21pm
Martinibomb:

Tech Bros... blech! I want to start a tech bro safari hunt hee hee
Avatar 7:21pm
Mr Fab:

Did not know Evil Genius, thx for the tip!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:22pm
Rich in Washington:

But, as the RTB song says, they just want to make our city better. I've actually heard that sentiment from recent transplants.
  7:22pm
Martinibomb:

Programming will be the new plumber job of the future in a few years once AI can just do it.. all these tech bros will be out of work soon
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:22pm
Rich in Washington:

That whole Orenda label has some amazingly skronk-damaged Jazz stuff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:23pm
Rich in Washington:

That's true, Martinibomb!
  7:23pm
Martinibomb:

Yeah I've been behind groups of tech bros where they babble about how awesome they are and how they are saving the whales n shit -- it's effed
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:24pm
Rich in Washington:

This band issued this on an incredibly packaged cassette with badges and stickers.
  7:24pm
Martinibomb:

love packaging.. Haven't heard this band either. Have you seen em live?
Avatar 7:26pm
Mr Fab:

Yeah, not a lot of beatniks and bikers on Venice Beach anymore. Fortunately, LA is so huge, it's fairly impossible to gentrify the whole place. We are getting San Fran transplants moving down here cuz they can't afford it anymore, like the great sampling composer Carl Stone. So that works for me!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:27pm
Rich in Washington:

I have. The bassplayer was also in the incredible Snails and is also in Avalanche Lilly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:28pm
Webhamster Henry:

I'll take some of the head cheese on garlic bread. Pay me first.
  7:28pm
jeez:

yeah whatever Mr Fab, i'm sure he'll be looking u up
Avatar 7:28pm
Mr Fab:

You said you could send me some Rudy Schwartz Project albums Rich. is that offer still good?I only have one. Think he'd be great to add to the stream.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:29pm
Rich in Washington:

I have tons! I will. Expect it soon!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:30pm
Rich in Washington:

He's amazing. He's amazing. A one man band affair, for the most part.
  7:30pm
Martinibomb:

this is super funny!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:31pm
Rich in Washington:

and super obscene, in a good way, at times.
Avatar 7:31pm
Mr Fab:

Hoo boy, trying not to laff at work here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:32pm
Rich in Washington:

He's been putting out albums in relative obscurity going way back to the 80s cassette era.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:32pm
Rich in Washington:

he puts out and album and then skulks off to his cave like Bin Laden until it's time for another one.
Avatar 7:34pm
Mr Fab:

one man band? Guess he doesn't play live then
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:35pm
Rich in Washington:

I don't think so. Maybe with a backing band, but I don't think he ever has. He's also sort of seen as a Church of Subgenius affiliated band.
  7:36pm
Martinibomb:

Damn Rudy Schwartz is fantastic!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:37pm
Rich in Washington:

I'm a big fan.
Avatar 7:39pm
Don-O:

I only have one of Schwartz' albums. I assume the rest are hard to find....much less get.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:40pm
Rich in Washington:

He's on DC Jam records but I think he mainly mails stuff out to people and stations. I have no contact info for him other than a PO box in Victoria BC.
  7:40pm
jeez:

tho whole of the new album is on youtube, u can download it using youtube to mp3
Avatar 7:41pm
Don-O:

....nevermind, I actually found him on Amazon....of all places!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:41pm
Rich in Washington:

He's also got some amazing self made videos on YouTube that are fucking hilarious.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:42pm
Rich in Washington:

His Sarah Palin video is not to be missed.
Avatar 7:42pm
Don-O:

.....nevermind, it was only for one album Rudy put out in 2008.
Avatar 7:43pm
Don-O:

Ipecac Records are still around! The last release I saw from them was the last Tipsy album...which shows you how behind I am with these things.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:47pm
Rich in Washington:

They are. I think it's a lot of Melvin-ish bands, related projects, etc.
  7:49pm
Martinibomb:

holy shit!
  7:49pm
Martinibomb:

I gotta get a copy of this kipper kids
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:49pm
Rich in Washington:

I haven't bought this album, but this is the last ever recording of the Kipper Kids together, and I think their first in 20 years or so.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:50pm
Rich in Washington:

Oh, yeah, Martinibomb. Your show on Freeform the other day made me think of the Kipper Kids.
  7:50pm
Martinibomb:

I've never ever heard this -- it's in fucking sane o fantastica
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:51pm
Webhamster Henry:

Back to Vicki!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:51pm
Rich in Washington:

I've got quite a lot of their stuff, what little exists, anyway.
Avatar 7:51pm
Mr Fab:

The 'Dr. Demento: Covered In Punk' has so much greatness.

Weird true fact: one of the Kipper Kids is married to Bette Midler.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:52pm
Webhamster Henry:

The Kipper Kids were appropriately Kippery!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:52pm
Rich in Washington:

yep. And they were featured on a special she did in the 80s called Mondo Beyondo that's worth looking at. Really dated stuff, though.
  7:52pm
Martinibomb:

@Fab yeah when I found that out it blew my mind and made me like Bette Midler more
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:53pm
Rich in Washington:

The other, Brian Routh, was an early FB pal. Sad to see him go.
Avatar 7:54pm
tw2sheds:

Sounds like White Fang and Black Tooth from Soupy Sales' show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:54pm
Rich in Washington:

Martin's pretty big in the art world and stinking rich. Brian died a pensioner. He was amazingly creative, even towards the end.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:55pm
Rich in Washington:

Hi tw2sheds! Thanks for tuning in!
  7:55pm
Martinibomb:

I kinda met brian via Soundcloud a few years ago when he joined was messaging with him a little. Have you seen that crazy cat puppet thing he and his partner did --it's on you tube pretty funny
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:57pm
Rich in Washington:

Durty Dolly? I wonder what happened to that?
  7:58pm
Martinibomb:

I'm not sure what it's called but man it really made me laugh
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:58pm
Rich in Washington:

This guy reminds me a lot of Eugene Chadbourne. Turns out they've played shows on the same bill before.
Avatar 7:58pm
Mr Fab:

Take a bow Rich, great job, sir.
  7:59pm
JtotheK:

Thanks for the tunes!
  7:59pm
Martinibomb:

Wow some great radio today! Big thanks to Mr. Fab for making this all happen
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:59pm
Rich in Washington:

They were nuts together. She's amazingly creative. I think the last year of his life was an uphill battle of dealing with his declining health and related tribulations.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:59pm
Rich in Washington:

Thank you for listening, everybody! See you all next week!
  7:59pm
Martinibomb:

and obviously Rich for the selections
