Today on the HoC: Radio on the radio!

I'm waiting for the next big dump of OTE episodes that the archivers have nearly ready, I hear.

Total Radio!!

OOps, I thought I included that classic 'Mr. Airstream' track in this section!

Good Hello, in person, to everybody!

I have always really appreciate Richard Lyon's cultural packrat tendencies, but also his twisted sense of humor.

Hi Don-O

That Dick Vaughn 70's shows helped me re-evaluate all that 70's nostalgia that was going on in the 90's.

Hey, M. Bomb!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:06pm
Rich in Washington:

Someone really needs to digitize that Moribund Music of the 70s episode(s). From what I hear, tapes of OTE shows prior to the mid-80s shows are kind of scarce.

Hi fun piece, do you have the U2 negativeland piece?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:07pm
Webhamster Henry:

I'm ready for my total radio.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:07pm
Rich in Washington:

I think Tim Maloney and Taylor Jessen and others are still combing through some of Don's airchecks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:08pm
Rich in Washington:

I love this automated voice thing. It cracks me up!
Avatar 6:09pm
Don-O:

They are still digitizing OTE shows for Archive.org. I'm guessing this part will take a couple more years.
Avatar 6:10pm
Don-O:

I'm tempted to do a Weatherman tribute show and might as well use his track on the U2 single.
Avatar 6:10pm
Otis Fodder:

Total Radio is so good.
Avatar 6:12pm
Otis Fodder:

A+ for Weatherman with U2.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:12pm

Weatherman's voice is so comforting.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:13pm
Webhamster Henry:

Good to hear on this day of Snowpocolypse warnings.
Avatar 6:14pm
Don-O:

I think there's a 'Return Of Total Radio' show in the OTE archives. I think I'll listen to that later.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:14pm
Rich in Washington:

Yes. I really like his voice. I love his home recordings with himself, his mother, and grandmother. They're weirdly soothing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:14pm
Rich in Washington:

I wonder whose voice this is?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:15pm
Rich in Washington:

There are a series of later OTE's where Don paid homage to Richard, I think around the time of his first bout with cancer, maybe thinking he was not going to be around much longer.
Avatar 6:17pm
Don-O:

I hate to say this, but I ended up with all three OTE tribute shows, Lyons, Ian Allen and, finally Don Joyce. I'm in the morbid level of Negland fandom here.
Avatar 6:18pm
Don-O:

I hope you bastards really REALLY love vinyl after this track!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:18pm
Rich in Washington:

Wow. I've heard lots of Zappa ephemera over the years but I don't think I've ever heard this!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:19pm
Webhamster Henry:

I like scratches, but not at 45.
Avatar 6:20pm
Don-O:

In the aircheck itself, Frank lays a lot of his favorite R&B and regional 45's and he and Les talk about teenage sub-cultures.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:20pm
Rich in Washington:

I also like that Tom Donoghue/Zappa interview. That's a fun one.
Avatar 6:21pm
Mr Fab:

Anyone just tuning in and wondering WTF?!
Avatar 6:23pm

Hurr Hurr Hurrr......
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:23pm
Rich in Washington:

I wonder if by Ralph Williams, they're talking about LA's Ralph Williams, the car dealer and inspiration for Firesign's Ralph Spoilsport.
Avatar 6:25pm
Don-O:

I think that would be Jack Poet. He's a poet but he doesn't know it!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:28pm
Rich in Washington:

Jack Poet's the guy that hired them to do commercials for his dealership. I think at least one of them got a VW out of the deal, which you hear Austin refer to as "El Mouse".
Avatar 6:30pm
Don-O:

Peter Bergman mention Poet lost his Volksweogon (sic) license after the ads where aired....once.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:30pm

Frank sounds so young.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:32pm

Oh wow! Zappa just reference Steve Reich in 1968!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:33pm

But someone also pointed out that Captain Beefheart also references Come Out. Crazy.

I don't listen to a lot of their radio play oriented shows but they have been growing on me lately.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:37pm
Rich in Washington:

The Moonrock shows are fun but a bit hard to follow.
Avatar 6:39pm
Mr Fab:

yeah, the "Trout Mask" song "Moonlight on Vermont" quotes "Come Out." That Beefheart song really sums up his philosophy, as it also quotes the old blues/spiritual "Gimme that old time religion". See? Avant garde + old Americana = Beefheart. At least that's how I interpet it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:40pm
Rich in Washington:

Indeed. Van Vliet was a true juncture point between Dada/Surrealism and rock and roll.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:42pm
Rich in Washington:

Zappa was also really familiar with 'modern' music, avant garde, etc. You can sure hear the similarities on 20th century modern symphonic music and his albums like Lumpy Gravy and Weasels Ripped My Flesh and some of the extended theatrics of Mothers of Invention.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:43pm
Rich in Washington:

I love the Weatherman on walkie talkie.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:45pm

Funny what they're talking about. The cultural throwbacks of the Tiki Room.
