Great show, Scott! When I lived in Champaign, IL (90 mils south of Chicago) I was fortunate enough to catch many stellar Chicago players in the 12 years I was there. The performances would often happen in a the main gallery of the campus art museum so the setting was incredible to hear/watch great music.
  11:29am
John from Florham Park:

@ Tim did you ever listen to WXRT at all
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33am
tim from champaign:

I don't think so John. When I'd go up to Chicago I'd definitely tune into WZRD while driving around.
  11:34am
Greg R.:

@tim I went to school in Champaign! Loved the music scene there many years ago (it was one of the few highlights from those years).

and @John, WXRT was very good for a while (through the 90s?) then the programming became way too nostalgic for my taste.
  11:36am
John from Florham Park:

@Tim will check out wzrd in a while
  11:37am
John from Florham Park:

@greg they are one of the few commercial stations I listen too anymore but I get what your saying
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39am
tim from champaign:

@Greg R - cool! I was there from 2006-2018, I got there after the heyday. I had friends who were around in the 80s-90s and the scene sounded awesome. Lots of bands, clubs and record stores. The "indie rock scene" while I was there was not my deal at all. I did love going to jazz/international/experimental concerts offered at the university.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40am
steveo:

interesting, from (freeform) WZRD: "Our DJs are anonymous on-air. You can call us wizards. (You’ll get used to it)."
  11:42am
John from Florham Park:

@steveo would rather know the names of DJs
  11:44am
Greg R.:

I was in Champaign in early 90s and it was very good. Only saw a couple jazz bands then.

John, an old school mate DJs online at CHIRP radio. His show is very WFMU-ish. maybe worth checking out that station. I still give XRT a listen when I'm back in town, always a warm spot for it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:44am

no schedule either, they say -- yeah, I like that the djs have personalities on WFMU

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:47am

@Greg - Did you dig The Didjits? I lived in Kalamazoo, MI in the early 90s and whenever the Didjits came through, shit got unhinged! Poster Children would play a couple times a year in K-zoo too.
  11:51am
John from Florham Park:

@greg give a listen to DePaul radio they are great too
  11:53am
Greg R.:

Didgits were great, Poster Children. Yes there were a bunch others that were excellent Hum also travelled a bit. Not a college band but Catfish and Carter Band were a sweaty trio of factory workers from Decatur who would do amazing 3 hour sets of R&B covers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55am
lukavino:

i never saw the Didjits, but i was lucky enough to see Rick Sims' Gaza Strippers in Normal, IL in the early 2000s.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55am

Whoa, Catfish and Carter Band sound pretty rad!

Scott, just finished listening to this episode in the archives. Thank you for this incredible tribute to the Chicago creative music scene. The music from that scene is so deep and still somewhat under-appreciated. Been loving your show the past several weeks!
