Hey, Don-O!
  6:03pm
Digger Barnes:

i went to see Tron at the cinema. It went way over my head
  6:04pm
Digger Barnes:

80s are without a doubt the best decade in music
Avatar 6:04pm
Don-O:

Ahhh! There. Let the bellyaching begin! Oh, and HIS Rich!!
  6:05pm
Digger Barnes:

blaming Ronald Reagan for 80s pop is getting old
  6:06pm
Digger Barnes:

70s pop was way worse than 80s pop

Rich in Washington:

Ah, Neighborhood Rhythms... I painstakingly ripped all those Freeway Records spoken word LPs and put them up at UBUWeb. God. Thousands of tracks, most under a minute.
Avatar 6:07pm
βrian:

I think I remember they day when the fade-out died.
Avatar 6:08pm
Don-O:

I tried to do a track by track MP3 of my copy of The Voices Of The Angles and I burned out within the first half of the record.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:08pm
Rich in Washington:

Yeah. They're insane. Also hard to cue up on record.
Avatar 6:09pm
Don-O:

I think it was Mr. Fab's late blog that had the tracks separated....and thank god for that!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:10pm
Rich in Washington:

Oh wow! How did I miss that? Would've saved me a huge headache - not that I didn't ultimately enjoy it.
  6:10pm
Martinibomb:

Hi Don-o! Hilarious stuff today - thanx!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:10pm
Rich in Washington:

I also put some rare Negativland radio pieces up there. They came to the station on open reel tapes.
Avatar 6:10pm
Mr Fab:

No, 'twas Rich who did that awesome deed. Much appreciated, Rich
Avatar 6:11pm
Don-O:

Small warning: I think I played one too many Rollins tracks in show.
Avatar 6:11pm
Don-O:

Thanks, Martini B!
Avatar 6:13pm
Mr Fab:

When people say "the '80s", I think, punk/alt-rock, and Golden Age hip-hop, which I loved. But guess most think: "Rick Astley." And that kinda stuff. Which I didn't.
  6:14pm
Digger Barnes:

Rick Astley's songs were great pop
Avatar 6:15pm
βrian:

I remember when Black Flag was just a nasty smelling spray that Mom would feverishly spray about the cabin.
  6:15pm
Digger Barnes:

Anyway, hardly anyone would think Astley, theyd think Madonna, Prince, Jacko
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:15pm
Rich in Washington:

yeah. there was a whole other 80s that most people didn't know about. Towards the end of the 80s, there was this effort by labels to push these fringe acts into the mainstream, finally culminating into the grunge bubble in the early 90s.
Avatar 6:17pm
Don-O:

Bubbles were meant to be burst. Look what happens to Wall Street every 8 to 10 years.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:18pm
Rich in Washington:

Anyone listen to Rollins' KCRW show? Is it worth listening to?
Avatar 6:19pm
βrian:

@Rich: "Grunge Bubble." Thank you for that.
Avatar 6:19pm
grantbob:

Mojo!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:19pm
Rich in Washington:

MOJO!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:19pm
Rich in Washington:

@βrian: HA! Sounds like a band, donnit?
Avatar 6:20pm
Mr Fab:

Oh yeah, I frequently listen to Rollin's show. Good stuff. it's NOT all old hardcore. In fact, he rarely plays that kinda thing. The Fall, Wire, new experimental oddball stuff, Suicide, Blue Note jazz...a pretty WFMU kinda show.
Avatar 6:20pm
Don-O:

There's a doc on him coming out later this year. I'm pretty sure I'll miss it as I don't live in L. A. anymore.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:21pm
Rich in Washington:

The documentary Hype is the best examination of the aforementioned grunge bubble.
Avatar 6:21pm
Mr Fab:

Plenty of Mojo in the Sheena stream!
  6:22pm
Martinibomb:

THIS song rules
Avatar 6:22pm
Mr Fab:

the normals: Do you like '80s music?
me: Oh yeah, i saw the Butthole Surfers, like, 5 times!
the normals: ???
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:23pm
Rich in Washington:

Totally! Literally my experience!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:25pm
Rich in Washington:

Godley and Creme were geniuses. Loved their albums...
Avatar 6:25pm
Mr Fab:

shopping malls are pretty much an endangered species nowadays. Mission accomplished, Mojo.
Avatar 6:26pm
Don-O:

I have yet to listen to their Consequences set!! I now know where Negativland got the number 17 from.....I think.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:28pm
Rich in Washington:

Consequences is kind of hard to listen to in one go. I have this promo version that just has most of the music, minus the Peter Cook bits. I especially love their LPs L, Freeze Frame and Snack Attack.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:28pm
Rich in Washington:

God. I haven't heard this in eons!
  6:29pm
Martinibomb:

The only thing I'll miss from Malls are the Arcades but those have moved over to retro arcade specialty venues and they have booze!
Avatar 6:30pm
Don-O:

Sadly, this track is the only interesting track in the soundtrack.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:30pm
Rich in Washington:

This movie is definitely a time capsule. It's really weirdly dated now.
Avatar 6:30pm
βrian:

I only miss the silent arcades.
Avatar 6:30pm
Don-O:

.....and as much as I love MTM, I still dig this track!!
Avatar 6:31pm
Mr Fab:

Oh my. I saw "Mondo New York" when it came out. It was ...interesting.
Avatar 6:35pm
Don-O:

I blame the 80's on what they did to Howard The Duck.
  6:36pm
Martinibomb:

@Don-O that is a good way to put that
Avatar 6:39pm
Don-O:

Trust me, the next 80's show will have a few things I still like from that decade.
Avatar 6:40pm
Don-O:

BTW: Henry still doesn't like U2: www.youtube.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:45pm
Rich in Washington:

Ah, 80s Lou. I remember getting New Sensations when it came out. Woof. Maybe a little better with age, limited availability of new Lou.
Avatar 6:46pm
Mr Fab:

Lou's mid-career renaissance period was golden: "New York," "Songs For Drella" "Magic and Loss.". I saw his "New York tour." Something to tell the grandchildren.

That business about the Statue of Bigotry certainly resonates now

Polka on 2 WFMU streams at the same time!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:49pm
Rich in Washington:

I love these medleys!
Avatar 6:51pm
Mr Fab:

His grunge-era "Alternative Polka" is especially genius.
Avatar 6:55pm
Don-O:

Al did one more medley in the 80's but it consisted of all Rolling Stones tunes and it was used for his UHF OST
Avatar 6:57pm
Don-O:

Anybody getting polka sick so far?!
Avatar 6:57pm
grantbob:

Thanks Don-O for a really nice hour of crap this week.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:58pm
Rich in Washington:

Thanks, Don-O!
