Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:36pm
David D:

Hey Mark - it's the bombarde, my (not-so) secret dream instrument. Think very loud piercing woodwind.
  4:36pm
Mark R.:

In true FMU fashion, David, Francoise Hardy is the only artist you've played that I'm familiar with, but I'm digging the whole show!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:37pm
David D:

Thanks, Mark!
  4:37pm
Mark R.:

Per wiki: The bombard is a contemporary conical-bore double-reed instrument widely used to play traditional Breton music. The bombard is a woodwind instrument, and a member of the shawm family. Like most shawms, it has a broad and very powerful sound, vaguely resembling a trumpet.
  4:38pm
Mark R.:

But in another place it's described as a "medieval" instrument. I guess meaning it dates from then, huh?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:40pm
David D:

I think the medieval reference might refer to the shawm family, or older versions. In any case, I once had the opportunity to try one out and would have happily bought it and taken it home to play it and become the talk of the neighborhood. Wiser voices prevailed, of course.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:43pm
fred:

@David: Did you take up the bagpipes instead?
  4:43pm
Dean:

From the Grove entry for "shawm": The larger sizes of European shawm also became known as ‘bombarde’ or ‘bumbard’ (from Lat. bombus, ‘drone, buzz’; It. bombardo, Ger. Pumhart or Pommer), a term deriving from a medieval artillery piece. The distinction already present in German in the middle of the 14th century between ‘schalmigen und bumbart’ (Strassburg, 1322) did not occur in English of the period, where all sizes were usually called ‘shawm’ or ‘hoboy’ indiscriminately.
  4:44pm
Mark R.:

I think you're right about the shawm thing. And yes, the bombarde might have drawn some ire, especially as you were first learning to play it. I'd imagine a poorly-played bombarde could start a riot.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:44pm
David D:

Fred: For me, it's bombard or bust!
  4:45pm
Dean:

Brings new meaning to the term, "drone warfare."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:47pm
David D:

Mark: I'm still thinking about it and practicing in the middle of the woods somewhere.
  4:49pm

are they the only 2 kinds of tea on sale in USA? I found it hard to find any decent tea when i wuz ever in USA. Yes, of course, im english
  6:14pm
Bull*hitter:

i could only ever find one kind, lipton i think, in usa supermarkets
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:16pm

lyons i have to have shipped -which is why i'm drinking barrys, which is widely available. my former housemate stole my lyons before i kicked her out.
  6:18pm

these brands all sound very generic/bottom of the barrel
  6:19pm
Bull*hitter:

lyons shouldnt be selling tea
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:19pm

(actually my 2nd favorite is taylor's "scottish breakfast", which i also have to mail away for, but it's extremely strong and it's 6.20 pm here)
  6:20pm
Bull*hitter:

is that the same lyons that are famous for ice cream here?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:21pm
cöelacânth∅:

how the hell should i know? very unlikely though. it's an irish company.
  6:22pm
Bull*hitter:

ive never heard of Taylor's. I just searched it. Taylor's of Harrogate. Must only be available in selected outlets.
  6:23pm
Bull*hitter:

well, lyons dont sell tea here, so they obviously dont think its good enuff for the UK market
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:23pm

if these brands that you're not familiar with sound bottom of the barrel to you that's your prejudice and proves as fact that you talk via asshole and don't know shit about tea.
Avatar 6:24pm
TDK60:

bullH. In big cities one can now get imported tea- like 'Yorkshire' from England or 'Barry's' from Eire, etc. Smaller US companies have good teas in natural food stores/co-ops. But I recall the Days of Lipton, served luke warm.
  6:25pm
Bull*hitter:

but i drank usa tea, lipton, and it was crap. everyone knows americans cant make tea
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:25pm
cöelacânth∅:

i used to like tetley, when i drank cheap tea. lipton was always weak.
  6:27pm
Bull*hitter:

Yorkshire tea IS a well known brand in supermarkets here, but only in the last 15-20 years. And its a small player. The market here for normal black tea is dominated by PG Tips, Tetley, with Typhoo i'm guessing a distant 3rd.
Avatar 6:28pm

tea. i've developed a taste for Make Mine a Builders. but, what do i know?
i do know Lipton could barely be called tea at all.
  6:29pm
Bull*hitter:

yes these more special teas like earl grey are way more popular here now than they used to be
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:29pm
cöelacânth∅:

yorkshire was terrible too. lyons is irish, so stronger and slightly more bitter to start than english teas, but like most irish teas tastes better and bares longer steeping better than english teas.
dublin teas company is an exception. absolutely disgusting!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 6:30pm
Michael 98145:

ooh, now -this- is interesting ..
  6:30pm
Bull*hitter:

i'll drink any fuc*ing tea, all tastes good to me
Avatar 6:30pm
TDK60:

PG Tips at least gives you a dark tea.
Avatar 6:31pm
TDK60:

..but I mostly drink yerba mate, so my taste buds are wack.
  6:33pm
Bull*hitter:

i the thing is dude, theres no such thing as irish or scottish tea lol, it all comes from fuc*ing India
  6:33pm
Bull*hitter:

and theres barely any discernible difference from all of the above brands
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:34pm
cöelacânth∅:

i've found most english teas don't have much body, as the irish do. but i haven't tried pg tips.
one thing i know is a good cup of irish or scottish tea gives me a long-lasting abundance of energy; as opposed to coffee, which gives me a jot then makes me crash.
  6:36pm
Bull*hitter:

scottish tea lol, these are all just marketing tricks. Like Yorkshire tea, its only called that to appeal to loud northern men who want to feel masculine. It was branded as 'How tea used to be', well thats funny , cuz it was a new brand. they just made it a bit stronger perhaps.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:37pm
cöelacânth∅:

@6.33 obviously the teas originally came from far away; and also obviously (to some of us) all regions of the world developed their own blends and preparations of those imported elements.
@6.33 again proving you know nothing about tea.
good englishman.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:39pm
cöelacânth∅:

yes, marketing ploys. this is why i don't call it "irish breakfast" tea or "scottish breakfast" tea.
this does not mean there's no difference between them.
Avatar 6:39pm
TDK60:

..I do like Oolong sometimes; and roasted Green a la sushi joints.
  6:40pm
Bull*hitter:

blends, schmends; if any tea wants to sell here, it has to taste the same as the usual generic. Pg tetley yorkshire, noone could tell them apart in a taste test
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:42pm
cöelacânth∅:

oolong doesn't tast like much to me, but the male 1/2 of the owners of my favorite café likes oolong best.
i do drink green; green with jasmine; and genmai cha frequently.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:43pm
cöelacânth∅:

*, maybe it's cuz y'all drop lots of milk and sugar in it.
  6:43pm
Bull*hitter:

your tea views are as pretentious as your name suggests
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:44pm
cöelacânth∅:

or maybe just maybe the masses of the uk are just as braindead as the masses of the us.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 6:45pm
Michael 98145:

:)

Bull*hitter:

i can assure u, food in usa generally is bloody disgusting. but then again, our food is digusting in comparison with europe
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:45pm
cöelacânth∅:

as there is such an abundance of great music still coming from the uk but most people there listen to shit, it's probably the same with tea.
  6:46pm

such generalising from a WFMU chatter; no surprise

Human League v Pet Shop Boys?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:55pm
cöelacânth∅:

4 sticks is maybe my favorite of that album. a few other gems too but man stairway just sucks. it's no wonder it's so popular, because it sucks!

Bull*hitter:

we've all met people like coelacanthe
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:56pm
