Unstuck in time, The Avant Ghetto wanders through heavy folk, pastoral noise, spiritual rock, harsh jazz and other dimly lit corners of the universe.

Arte Johnson spoke very bad Swedish on Rowan And Martin’s Laugh-In

My bum is on the bork bork bork!
  Mon. 1/28/19 12:15am zenkoan:

What a gorgeous set...and excited to hear this particular track from this very early Pat Metheny album; I've always loved it
Avatar Mon. 1/28/19 12:15am Adamsworth:

Hell yes I've been listening from the beginning of the show, it's been a great one tonight! I haven't listened to much Methany before, this song is so smooth and great.
Avatar Mon. 1/28/19 12:16am Adamsworth:

ha ha yes, this band kicking in part of Methany...
  Mon. 1/28/19 12:17am nardo:

Yes, nice to hear Metheny.
  Mon. 1/28/19 12:17am zenkoan:

This is a smooth piece, but I always smile when people equate Metheny overall with "smooth jazz"..they'll never heard Zero Tolerance for Silence, or probably much of his huge diverse catalog
  Mon. 1/28/19 12:19am zenkoan:

Sup, Jeff..hope you're feeling as chill tonight as the music suggests
Avatar Mon. 1/28/19 12:20am Adamsworth:

I'll check out other parts of his catalogue, the guitar tone on this song was one of the smoothest I've ever heard though...
  Mon. 1/28/19 12:22am tuner fish:

The first time I heard Metheny was on his album “Trio 99>00” - some incredible guitar playing, as well as my “go-to” example of Bill Stewart’s peerless drumming.
Avatar Mon. 1/28/19 12:22am gregorianpants:

need to check out more ECM stuff
  Mon. 1/28/19 12:24am zenkoan:

Because some of Metheny's mellowest, most melodic stuff (such as Last Train Home) got so much airplay, some people tend to think it represents his work, but there are four decades of amazing, diverse sounds to discover, both with Pat Metheny Group, and in a plethora of other settings (solo, duos, trios, quartets, etc).
  Mon. 1/28/19 12:27am Dean:

Up for some Saunders/Garcia/Khan/Vitt. Got any?
  Mon. 1/28/19 12:28am zenkoan:

tunerfish, another incredible drummer that Metheny tours and records with is Antonio Sanchez--check him out
  Mon. 1/28/19 12:32am tuner fish:

Antonio Sanchez! Another great one! I’ve seen him play with Chick Corea’s trio - I believe John Pattituci was on bass? It was a great night!
  Mon. 1/28/19 12:36am Jeff Conklin:

Hey y’all. Sorry been having technical issues. Think we’re ok now but was melting down for a bit

I like my Metheny smooth with lots of MIDI
  Mon. 1/28/19 12:47am Dean:

I like my Metheny with Derek Bailey.
  Mon. 1/28/19 12:53am Dean:

In addition to the Garcia/Saunders request, I'd like to add Amazing Blondel. That'd be nice, too. Deuter brought them to mind.
Avatar Mon. 1/28/19 1:02am Franco Twinkie:

Jeff, is this a request line now? If that is the case, then some Legion Of Mary for me.
  Mon. 1/28/19 1:02am Dean:

In college in '98? Christ, I'm old.
Avatar Mon. 1/28/19 1:03am Adamsworth:

ha ha freaking out the squares at the Metheny concert, hell yeah Jeff!
Avatar Mon. 1/28/19 1:04am Adamsworth:

do a set of live Dead Jeff!
Avatar Mon. 1/28/19 1:05am Adamsworth:

ha ha you DO take requests!
  Mon. 1/28/19 1:05am Dean:

Precisely. Not a request, strictly speaking. A mere suggestion, nudge, nudge, know what I mean?
Avatar Mon. 1/28/19 1:06am Jeff Conklin:

@Dean: Noted ;)
Avatar Mon. 1/28/19 1:07am Jeff Conklin:

@Adamsworth: Granted

this is exactly what I asked for
  Mon. 1/28/19 1:09am Agent Peter:

Hi ho an excellent selection!
  Mon. 1/28/19 1:15am saucerful:

Love this Dead set. At first I thought that sounded like a farfisa in the background. Did a search and found out it's Tom Constanten on a vox organ! Cool...http://deadessays.blogspot.com/2016/02/the-vox-and-hammond-1967-1969.html

Savour da flavour
Mon. 1/28/19 1:17am dave in brooklyn:

Man is this just what the doctor ordered!
Back on Metheny, the other night I caught his current bassist, Linda May Han Oh, in Vijay Iyer’s Trio (w/Tyshawn Sorey). My blown mind is still in recovery. Wow.
Avatar Mon. 1/28/19 1:21am Franco Twinkie:

I've been listening to WFMU since last April, I guess that makes me a fetus in the Avant Ghetto. Makes no nevermind. I remember the day when I bought Aoxomoxoa. It was a warm winter Sunday in 1971, much like today. I was helping my dad build a brick planter in the front yard. At a certain point I just lost interest, and much to his annoyance, got on my bike and rode to Gemco and paid $3.19 for it. I still have that tattered copy....As well as the latest version, with Clementine Jam. My favorite Dead album, hands down.
  Mon. 1/28/19 1:21am saucerful:

Ha...great story Franco!
  Mon. 1/28/19 1:23am saucerful:

Love the guitar sound too...
Avatar Mon. 1/28/19 1:26am Franco Twinkie:

Jerry's plaintive guitar on Dark Star is the sound of San Francisco to me. The fog blowing in over Twin Peaks and swirling down Divisadero.
  Mon. 1/28/19 1:28am saucerful:

Yeah, exactly! I was just thinking this sounds like quintessential SF sound. Were you living in the Bay Area then by any chance?
  Mon. 1/28/19 1:29am Dean:

Oh, for fuck's sake. There's no such thing as a "San Francisco sound"!
  Mon. 1/28/19 1:30am saucerful:

Haha yes there is!
Avatar Mon. 1/28/19 1:30am Franco Twinkie:

No. However I am their there frequently. Have been going since I was 11 in 1966.
  Mon. 1/28/19 1:32am saucerful:

Awesome...what a time to be a pre-teen>teenager.
Avatar Mon. 1/28/19 1:33am Franco Twinkie:

Dean, you darned Berkeley snob. I swear you should cross the bridge once in awhile, and trip out in the park with me.
  Mon. 1/28/19 1:37am Dean:

I have no interest in tripping out.
Avatar Mon. 1/28/19 1:38am Franco Twinkie:

You are such an old grouch.
  Mon. 1/28/19 1:39am saucerful:

"Discerning aficionados of '60s rock will note the similarity of the instrumental intro of 'St. Stephen' and the defining riff of Jefferson Airplane's 'Volunteers of America.' Regarding the latter, songwriter Paul Kantner in the liner notes to the 1987 Airplane compilation 2400 Fulton Street attributes the riff to an old fiddle lick."

Avatar Mon. 1/28/19 1:41am gregorianpants:

Man I fucking love "The Eleven"
Avatar Mon. 1/28/19 1:44am Franco Twinkie:

Me too! We had a barn in Santa Cruz where I would get high, watch the sun stream in thru the rotten roof and listen to The Eleven on a crappy old school record player.
  Mon. 1/28/19 1:55am saucerful:

Sounds lovely Franco. I love thinking about the history of what was going on in the late '60s that might have influenced the Dead's mood/playing during their sets. For example, Feb. 13, 1969 was a major date for nationwide black student protests...2 days before this show. National guard were called in on some campuses.
Avatar Mon. 1/28/19 2:01am Franco Twinkie:

As you well know, saucer, they had decamped to Marin by then, as had Quicksilver. The trees and green hills I'm sure had something to do with their sound. It worked for a while, until it didn't.
  Mon. 1/28/19 2:05am saucerful:

Ah yes...
Avatar Mon. 1/28/19 2:33am Jeff Conklin:

Knocked everyone out with the new age....
  Mon. 1/28/19 2:41am Maximiliano:

Nah no worries; the new age has been great! (Demby and Stearns in particular)
Avatar Mon. 1/28/19 2:58am Jeff Conklin:

Night, all. Thanks for listening...
