Like this Abraham Inc, quite a clarinetist!
(speaking of clarinetist saw Andy Statman this past Saturday. Man, he's just gotten better (and he was no slouch to begin with). Played Klezmer Bluegrass, clarinet mandolin (and a tune I love of his, Flatbush Waltz). It was in A North Jersey Chabad synagogue, with an audience that fit the temple which was also interesting).
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 3:38pm
Stanley:

fred: I've enduring memories of early mornings at the cafe at Gare du Nord, as I awaited the London boat train. Coffee, cheap red wine and an atmosphere thick with Gauloise smoke (This was late seventies)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:38pm
David D:

Doc: That must have been amazing! And the clarinetist here was in fact David Krakauer...

Didn't someone make a Sandy Bull documentary? I distinctly remember hearing an interview with (I think) his daughter and something about a documentary about him.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:55pm
David D:

Rich: Sounds intriguing in any case...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:00pm

@Rich: I think so, I might even have seen parts of it at a gig, many years ago (I'm not much into film, so I skipped most of it)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:00pm

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:06pm
Rich in Washington:

My dad's a fan of instrumental guitar, and after he became chairridden, I have been ripping records for him to listen to on his laptop, but Sandy Bull was a bit too far out for him.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:11pm
David D:

Rich: That must be a great help to him. What sorts of things does he like?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:12pm
fred:

@Rich: It's called "No Deposit, No Return Blues", that gig was in 2010, but it seems it was not the final version. There was also a doc about his mother: www.lesvoutes.org...

Thanks, Fred!

coelacanth∅:

so are all the artists in this set from zimbabwé?
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 4:55pm

As much as I love Oliver Mtukudzi, it was always Thomas Mapfumo that did it for me.

hah! well i wasn't really looking...almost all the artists in this set are the same artist!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:55pm

Stanley i'm huge into Thomas Mapfumo!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 4:58pm

He has passed away?
How sad. There will a day of National Mourning for him in Zimbabwe, I would think.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:59pm
coelacanth∅:

rest in peace Oliver Mtukudzi.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 5:00pm
Stanley:

Coel, Yeah Mapfumo was more of a rebel compared to Mtukudzi who was a sort of national treasure.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 5:02pm
Stanley:

Mugabe is still living and the good ones we lose.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:04pm
David D:

Stanley: Yes, there has been an outpouring of grief and mourning there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:04pm
David D:

Coel: "Oriental" here just refers to Eastern Nigeria.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:10pm
coelacanth∅:

i read something, don't know if it's true... i think it was in the shanachie records catalog that turned me onto him to begin with, in the 80s - that after Mapfumo was thrown in jail for speaking up, they let him out just to perform at some kind of festival or event, but told him what to sing about. (or, what not to)
soldiers stood at the sides of the stage with guns pointed toward him, in case he sang his rebel music. they'd warned him about this, but he sang against the government anyway. they didn't shoot him.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:11pm
David D:

That is true bravery, if true - and even if not.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 5:13pm
Stanley:

His album 'Corruption' was dynamite
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:14pm
coelacanth∅:

i sure wanted to believe it! but either way just speaking out against the government required bravery. (or stupidity, but usually bravery!)
