Favoriting February 12, 2019: JONATHAN HERTZBERG (Dirty Old New York aka Fun City II)
Jonathan Hertzberg is back for a fifth installment (the second employing his exhaustive knowledge of John Lindsay and Ed Koch-era New York City portrayed in film which can be experienced through his "Dirty Old New York aka Fun City" video series). Whether it's the subway, Twin Towers, baseball, punk vs. disco or crooked cops off in the distance, a long-gone NYC is undeniably in the foreground, preserved in all of its glory, as is the music from this era. Check out Jonathan's first Morricone Island-curated show of music from films featuring NYC preserved in all of its glory on 7/21/15, and subsequent appearances on 12/15/15 (Coming Of Age Films), 1/17/17 (Films of 1981) and 11/21/17 (Source Music).

hi boods. no farting or vomiting sfx in this show. sorry in advance.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:15pm
melinda:

I watched Prince of the City for the first time not long ago, and it featured the moody urban saxophone which was once common but you don't hear anymore in movies. It made it seem sort of dated but not in a bad way.
Avatar 7:15pm
Linda Lee:

that's what we love. dated in a good way. :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:17pm

i'm not a fan of saxamaphone - just too romcommish for me.

I remember the actor in that photo from All That Jazz, one of my first favorite NYC movies.

Dale, actually I'm fine with that. This sounds like really classy 70's porn music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:18pm
dale:

classy and 70s porn?i know of no such pairing.
Avatar 7:19pm

what's cool is that visions of new york we saw in film & on tv informed & mirrored our experience of the place, not unrealistically.

@LindaLee: I know what you mean. Just finished watching the Netflix series, “Russian Doll.” I liked it, but there was a lot of fauxthentic/cartoonish takes on New York.

Tootsie also featured moody urban saxophone. I must have watched it on cable a dozen times after seeing it in the theater.
Avatar 7:22pm
Linda Lee:

that's a great word: fauxthentic. pefect.
  7:22pm
JakeGould:

@LindaLee: Kinda like the way “30 Rock” is fauxthentic. Watching Natasha Lyonne drop casual Yiddish was cool tho.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:22pm

yes. it was a proven movie so why not a proven play? lazy, but it'll do well no doubt.

I tried watching 30 Rock and was thoroughly unimpressed.

@ultradamno: That said, I would have liked “Russian Doll” as a 2 hour movie. Not 4 hours of the thing.

Mostly because every TV show seems to feel obligated to do one, it's threatening to overtake Christmas Carol as the most overused trope.

What great comments! Of course Hertzberg would inspire that. He’s great - had the pleasure of interviewing him for the Bogdanovich/ They All Laughed doc I directed One Day Since Yesterday, and I was sohappy to see it get a mention here! Thanks @Ven for that! I also interviewed Jon about his Dirty Old New York / Fun City series here https://vimeo.com/90324260 great show and great comments!
