harold camping and werner herzog are not that far apart.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:07pm
Ike:

Wasn't Camping the one who spent tons of money to put up all those billboards warning people about the end of the world and giving a specific date, and then went bankrupt when the end didn't arrive? Ahh, good ol' eschatology.
Avatar 6:07pm
Carmichael:

I believe it was a math error, Ike.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:08pm

he forgot leap years.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:08pm

@Ike pretty much. But it was his followers that put up all the money for that stuff. He was just the messenger. May 21, 2012 came and went... Or maybe we're all in hell right now and we didn't know it

Say what you will about Camping, but he stood behind every one of his wrong predictions until the bitter end.

@Rich in WA, that's why I was so fascinated by him. He was so damn sincere and certain.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:10pm

and he was also firm in his conviction that a car was just a car, whether it had a Dodge Demon decal on it or not.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:12pm

i don't hear it. fabio is more jeff goldblumish.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:12pm

I liked that sample from Micah's show on Tuesday. Interesting mix! Scott W. did something like that once, but his was just *after* the marathon, an attempt to exorcise it. This is more timely, and I liked this mix better.

I feel sort of guilty that towards the end of his ministry and life, I recorded one of his episodes of Family Radio and I then edited out every actual word, leaving just the ums, ers, uhs, stammers and false starts to words and sent the file to members of Negativland. It got played on Over the Edge and the following week, Camping had a stroke and had to retire from radio.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:13pm

Harold Camping used to encroach on FMU's signal back when I was listening at Upsala College in my dorm room.

Rich in Washington, thank you for your service.

Rich in Washington:

He was on the radio for a very long time. I used to get him on some bad reception AM station. It would drive my coworkers bonkers, but I found his show rather hilarious. He didn't screen for prank callers very well back then.

I fondly recall listening to shortwave radio with my dad on the Grundig 1060 that he brought over when the family emigrated in the 1950s. It was fascinating spinning the dials. I adore Adriene's show immensely and it's one of my favorites.

When I lived in Japan, I had a shortwave radio as a kid, I spent my nights before bed surfing the radio waves from around the world. There was actually standard American pop programming from one station in Alaska that came in clear.

you can go online and remotely control and listen to sdr (software defined radio) receivers in europe and see the activity viewed as a waterfall screen. you can hear european longwave like that.

Ken From Hyde Park:

I came across a kids' book one time about a youngster living somewhere in central Asia. A poor family; one night, the father came home not with food, but a huge map of the world. They were angry for going hungry that night, but the boy would sit and stare at the map and imagine what the faraway countries were like. It changed his life, he said later. Unfortunately, I don't recall the author or the book's title.
