Hey C!
Avatar Wed. 3/20/19 10:07pm Erica:

I hope to hear the Monkees in this set as the Wrecking Crew played on their first 2 albums. And Ventura Highway by America, but that's wishful thinking.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 3/20/19 10:07pm fleep:

Ah yeah, I'm your Stream Daddy now.

Avatar Wed. 3/20/19 10:13pm Parq:

God dang, I never noticed before in all these years, but that wasn't a flute on the instro break in "Mary", it was a recorder. This changes everything!
Avatar Wed. 3/20/19 10:13pm coelacanth∅:

just listened to an association album yesterday. either the first or 2nd time in my entire Life to listen to a whole association album.
Avatar Wed. 3/20/19 10:14pm coelacanth∅:

it was a recorder, but no shittyflute!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 3/20/19 10:14pm Funky16Corners:

Avatar Wed. 3/20/19 10:17pm coelacanth∅:

Parq are you sure? i backed it up and it sounds like a flute to me, but i'm listening via stone age-era 13" laptop.
Avatar Wed. 3/20/19 10:18pm Parq:

I miss Glen.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 3/20/19 10:18pm Funky16Corners:

It's either a recorder or an ocarina
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 3/20/19 10:18pm Granny Spicy Tuna:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 3/20/19 10:18pm Granny Spicy Tuna:

Anyway, fleep, coelacanth∅ and i started a new band. The Urchins.
Avatar Wed. 3/20/19 10:19pm Erica:

My favorite GC song here. Reminds me of Homer Simpson lol.
Avatar Wed. 3/20/19 10:19pm Franco Twinkie:

Was that Billy Strange?
Avatar Wed. 3/20/19 10:19pm Parq:

Coal, I'm not sure of much of anything, but it sounded to me like wood, not metal, and not a fine-cut reed. Hey, what do I know?
Avatar Wed. 3/20/19 10:21pm coelacanth∅:

where's our okarina player (and wfmu comment board commenter) , tuner fish?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 3/20/19 10:21pm Doug Schulkind:

Like glue, brother.
Avatar Wed. 3/20/19 10:23pm coelacanth∅:

all 3 of those bands had their own drummer.
- talk about a slap in the face!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 3/20/19 10:24pm Funky16Corners:

Yeah, C, there's a LOT of that in this show
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 3/20/19 10:24pm Funky16Corners:

@Franco - I'd bet that was Glen himself playing that solo.
Avatar Wed. 3/20/19 10:25pm Franco Twinkie:

Exibit A - tom tom runs.
Avatar Wed. 3/20/19 10:25pm coelacanth∅:

haha right Larry!
-i was mistaken though and got confused, as i often do between Toomy Roe and Tommy James.
Avatar Wed. 3/20/19 10:26pm Franco Twinkie:

Now we frug!
Avatar Wed. 3/20/19 10:26pm coelacanth∅:

(& Tommy Roe also)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 3/20/19 10:30pm Matt from New Orleans:

What kind of synthesizer are they using in invaders?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 3/20/19 10:32pm Matt from New Orleans:

Probably a moog based on the date
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 3/20/19 10:32pm Funky16Corners:

I do not know
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 3/20/19 10:34pm Granny Spicy Tuna:

ha ha! i actually have a fish-shaped okarina!
Avatar Wed. 3/20/19 10:34pm coelacanth∅:

yeah i don't think there were many options then. on the other hand it doesn't sound like a moog to me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 3/20/19 10:36pm Matt from New Orleans:

That’s why I asked
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 3/20/19 10:38pm Funky16Corners:

There's no credit on the album.
Avatar Wed. 3/20/19 10:38pm coelacanth∅:

there's probably many sounds the 60's moogs could make that i just haven't heard. (or didn't know were moogs)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 3/20/19 10:39pm Funky16Corners:

A lot of it depends on who was working the Moog. There were a lot of dabblers and a few people who knew how to get musicality out of it
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 3/20/19 10:41pm Matt from New Orleans:

Hal Blaine used a moog on two of his own songs in 67 which were two of the first ten ever songs that featured a moog so it probably was a moog

Cool! Thanks for the link!
Avatar Wed. 3/20/19 10:43pm Erica:

Loving this mix so far. Speaking of Pet Sounds, God Only Knows was used for the new trailer for Toy Story 4. Just wanted to point that out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 3/20/19 10:44pm Funky16Corners:

It's interesting how many of those Moog tracks feature Paul Beaver, later of Beaver and Krause
Avatar Wed. 3/20/19 10:44pm Franco Twinkie:

I don't know about no moog, but I do know a guitar played through a Leslie when I hear one.
Avatar Wed. 3/20/19 10:44pm coelacanth∅:

heh, i have that web article bookmarked in this computer and didn't think to check it.
Thanks for the link.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 3/20/19 10:44pm Funky16Corners:

@Erica - Just picked up an interesting cover of God Only Knows, I'll have to play it soon
Avatar Wed. 3/20/19 10:46pm Erica:

Cool Larry.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 3/20/19 10:46pm Funky16Corners:

@Franco - Back in the day, the bass player I was in a band with bought a Leslie from a piano/organ store that was going out of business. he had to rebuild it (rusty) but eventually got it going
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 3/20/19 10:47pm Matt from New Orleans:

I wish Brian Wilson would have been able to record and release Smile as he wanted back in the 60s.
Avatar Wed. 3/20/19 10:47pm coelacanth∅:

i'd like to have a leslie.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 3/20/19 10:47pm Funky16Corners:

Me too
Avatar Wed. 3/20/19 10:48pm coelacanth∅:

...if a hammond b2 or b3 happened to come with that leslie i'd take that too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 3/20/19 10:48pm Funky16Corners:

i was answering Matt. I already have too much stuff laying around
Avatar Wed. 3/20/19 10:49pm Franco Twinkie:

There not complicated machines. Kind of like a musical washing machine.
Avatar Wed. 3/20/19 10:49pm coelacanth∅:

i do too Larry. i still want it!
Avatar Wed. 3/20/19 10:50pm coelacanth∅:

right, Franco. 'probably could make a suitable substitute.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 3/20/19 10:50pm Funky16Corners:

It's basically just a rotating speaker, right?
Avatar Wed. 3/20/19 10:51pm coelacanth∅:

(i still want the hammond though. i don't think i could build one of those)
Avatar Wed. 3/20/19 10:51pm Franco Twinkie:

I have a 31H "tallboy" Needs an 18" speaker for the bottom drum.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 3/20/19 10:52pm Matt from New Orleans:

I saw The Beach Boys with Brian Wilson at Jazz Fest a few years ago and it was barely tolerable. Between Uncle Jessie mcing and playing the drums and Brian Wilson having no vocal range or projection, it was only “saved” by the sheer amount of backup singers.
Avatar Wed. 3/20/19 10:52pm coelacanth∅:

Larry, yes. variable speed.
Avatar Wed. 3/20/19 10:53pm Franco Twinkie:

Wait! Was that really sugar I put in my ice tea? You bastard! I can't go home like this!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 3/20/19 10:53pm Funky16Corners:

@Matt - I'd rather see Brian with his LA/non-Beach Boy touring band, a much more sympathetic setting
Avatar Wed. 3/20/19 10:54pm Erica:

Bummer Matt. Sorry you had a bad time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 3/20/19 10:54pm Matt from New Orleans:

Had it been indoors in a room with good acoustics, it might have been a different story. But outside on the unsubtle speaker arrays it was a mess.
Avatar Wed. 3/20/19 10:55pm coelacanth∅:

that's sad,Matt. not so surprising though!
...but i would've guessed mike love to be behind it's near-unbearableness.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 3/20/19 10:56pm Matt from New Orleans:

That’s a given of course. Didn’t feel the need to dump on that piece of shit.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 3/20/19 10:56pm Funky16Corners:

Mike Love is like the Typhoid Mary of shittiness
Avatar Wed. 3/20/19 10:56pm Franco Twinkie:

Okay now! Gene. The dark Byrd.
Avatar Wed. 3/20/19 10:59pm Franco Twinkie:

This is so nutty!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 3/20/19 11:00pm Matt from New Orleans:

Luckily there was plenty of other good music and food that day and I ended up going to check out Cubano Be Cubano Bop: Poncho Sanchez
& his Latin Jazz Band featuring Terence Blanchard instead which was really good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 3/20/19 11:00pm Funky16Corners:

Good save!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 3/20/19 11:02pm Matt from New Orleans:

Had to look that up. It was almost seven years ago.
Avatar Wed. 3/20/19 11:03pm Franco Twinkie:

I wonder who was the best clapper in The Wrecking Crew?
Avatar Wed. 3/20/19 11:04pm coelacanth∅:

en.wikipedia.org...
Avatar Wed. 3/20/19 11:08pm coelacanth∅:

that was me,Franco. being just a clapper i never got any personnel credits...or pay...
-and i had to use a pseudonym...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 3/20/19 11:09pm Matt from New Orleans:

Rosie Greer was a solid performer considering this was a side hustle
Avatar Wed. 3/20/19 11:10pm Erica:

Doin' the Monkey to this song. Haha.
Avatar Wed. 3/20/19 11:10pm coelacanth∅:

by the way Franco, that burrito sure is holding up nice! aren't you ever gonna eat it though?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 3/20/19 11:10pm Funky16Corners:

@Matt - Yeah, I have this LP and a bunch of his 45s lots of really good stuff
Avatar Wed. 3/20/19 11:11pm coelacanth∅:

what Matt said
Avatar Wed. 3/20/19 11:12pm Franco Twinkie:

Hari Hare Rowe ran the music circle at Occidental collage. They had all the big guns play there. The night Ravi Shankar played, George I saw George Harrison in the audience.
Avatar Wed. 3/20/19 11:12pm coelacanth∅:

(oh maybe that's not a burrito. well whatever it is!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 3/20/19 11:12pm Funky16Corners:

Wow!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 3/20/19 11:12pm Matt from New Orleans:

Some of these northern songs I can’t figure out how to dance to them with any rhythm.
  Wed. 3/20/19 11:13pm Doug Schulkind:

Slamming horn section on the Al Wilson trip.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 3/20/19 11:14pm Funky16Corners:

@Doug - That album is really good. A nice cross section of soul and pop. Nice version of Fred Neil's Dolphins
Avatar Wed. 3/20/19 11:15pm coelacanth∅:

i'd feel pretty fortunate just to inhale some carbon dioxide George Harrison OR Ravi Shankar had exhaled.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 3/20/19 11:15pm Matt from New Orleans:

Granted I have two left feet but I struggle to understand the northern scene back in the 70s. Bunch of white people jerking around awkwardly.
Avatar Wed. 3/20/19 11:16pm coelacanth∅:

this is excellent! -though not as killer as Fats' version of "...me and my monkey"
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 3/20/19 11:16pm Funky16Corners:

I saw Ravi at Carnegie Hall on his 75th birthday tour. I wasn't close enough to exchange carbon dioxide
  Wed. 3/20/19 11:17pm Doug Schulkind:

Never. Heard. Before.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 3/20/19 11:17pm Funky16Corners:

@Matt - I did a Northern Soul special a while back: testifyradio.wordpress.com...
  Wed. 3/20/19 11:17pm Doug Schulkind:

Wow.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 3/20/19 11:18pm Funky16Corners:

Worth it for the title alone
Avatar Wed. 3/20/19 11:19pm coelacanth∅:

and Wow! (Larry @11.16)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 3/20/19 11:20pm Funky16Corners:

@C - It was a great show. His daughter Anoushka played and Zakir Hussain played the tablas which was mindblowing
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 3/20/19 11:20pm Matt from New Orleans:

I listened to that show. I enjoy lots of songs that they danced to back then but a great deal of them don’t really strike me as dance music per se.
Avatar Wed. 3/20/19 11:20pm Franco Twinkie:

Relax baby, We're going to my shack up in the canyon.
Avatar Wed. 3/20/19 11:20pm coelacanth∅:

i'll guess this isn't the Tim Buckley song...
Avatar Wed. 3/20/19 11:21pm Erica:

I feel like I'm on an LSD trip.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 3/20/19 11:22pm Funky16Corners:

@C - Which song?
Avatar Wed. 3/20/19 11:22pm coelacanth∅:

Wowow! Anoushka and Zakir! what the hell am i doing with my life?!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 3/20/19 11:22pm Funky16Corners:

@Erica - I think that's what they were going for
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 3/20/19 11:22pm doctorjazz:

This Flashes is pretty interesting (not an insult)
Avatar Wed. 3/20/19 11:23pm coelacanth∅:

Larry, "hallucinations"
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 3/20/19 11:24pm Funky16Corners:

Yeah, that album is pretty far out in an interesting way.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 3/20/19 11:24pm Funky16Corners:

@C - Def not the Buckley song
Avatar Wed. 3/20/19 11:24pm Erica:

the late 60s was all about psychedelic pop and hippies, Too bad I didn't live in that time. I would've loved to go to Woodstock, which turns 50 this summer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 3/20/19 11:25pm Funky16Corners:

I have a cousin that went to Woodstock. I think it was better as a place to say you were at than a place to actually be. Lots of mud.
Avatar Wed. 3/20/19 11:25pm Franco Twinkie:

Larry, I saw Zakir Hussain playing with Ali Akbar Khan outside at Stern Grove in San Francisco, a big stand of redwoods in the city.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 3/20/19 11:26pm Funky16Corners:

Zakir is probably the best drummer I've ever seen live.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 3/20/19 11:27pm doctorjazz:

I was a waiter at a summer camp the Woodstock summer. Staff was all grounded so no one would go
Avatar Wed. 3/20/19 11:28pm coelacanth∅:

Franco why didn't you call me?!
Avatar Wed. 3/20/19 11:28pm Erica:

Lots of mud (and hippies). I've seen photos and watched a bit of the Woodstock documentary as well as home videos of it on YouTube but still...it's funny how when you didn't live in a specific time period, you wish you had compared to what time you live in now or what you lived through.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 3/20/19 11:28pm doctorjazz:

The Catskills were crazy that weekend though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 3/20/19 11:30pm Funky16Corners:

My sister, her boyfriend and i went to the site on the 15th anniversary. It was surprisingly small and rural, and very muddy (Again). I ruined my only pair of Birkenstocks
Avatar Wed. 3/20/19 11:30pm Franco Twinkie:

Coel, had I known! But it was in the early '90's, I didn't know you yet.
Avatar Wed. 3/20/19 11:33pm coelacanth∅:

Franco -still!
Avatar Wed. 3/20/19 11:36pm Franco Twinkie:

They always have great shows there in summer. Let's see what's coming up this year.
Avatar Wed. 3/20/19 11:37pm Franco Twinkie:

Mike died this year, I think.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 3/20/19 11:38pm Funky16Corners:

I don't think i'd heard that. Father of Wendy (from Prince's band),

Mama Cass had a strong full voice. Gone too soon.

All good, Franco. Seems like just yesterday.
Avatar Wed. 3/20/19 11:46pm Erica:

Also I noticed that a good number of songs on this show are from the Dunhill label.

@Erica - One of my favorite singers
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 3/20/19 11:46pm Funky16Corners:

Dunhill was (like Soul City) based in Los Angeles

There’s a great graphic novel by a French cartoonist Penelope Bagieu about Mama Cass
California Dreamin': Cass Elliot Before The Mamas & the Papas

I remember when the song first came out it made no sense to me since it was always sunny.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 3/20/19 11:50pm Funky16Corners:

Which song, Franco?
Avatar Wed. 3/20/19 11:51pm Franco Twinkie:

California Dreamin"
Avatar Wed. 3/20/19 11:51pm coelacanth∅:

Franco i made a youboob playlist with ...60? 70? different artists doing hey joe. it's been several years and i don't know how many of those versions still exist on that playlist. (the playlist is called "snowflakes" and it also has many versions of "louie louie", "the wimowe song" (lion sleeps tonight), and "ionisation")
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 3/20/19 11:51pm Matt from New Orleans:

California dreamin’ I imagine as it’s in the book title
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 3/20/19 11:52pm Funky16Corners:

Well the place they're describing in California Dreaming is New York City. They're dreaming ABOUT California
Avatar Wed. 3/20/19 11:52pm Erica:

Haha youboob. Yes I agree there are quite a bit of covers of Hey Joe out there.
Avatar Wed. 3/20/19 11:53pm Franco Twinkie:

I figured that out when I went to the east village in December.

You socked it out of the park tonight, Larry.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 3/20/19 11:56pm Funky16Corners:
